I'm starting to think I'll just spend a month in Rio, then go to Vitoria or Florianopolis in February/March, avoid the Carnival insanity with a decent base of Portuguese.

Jaif:

Your daily budget in Rio is $141. This assumes a $1,000 US a month rental and $1,000 US a month intensive courses. Learning portuguese in brazil is crazy expensive... I may be low balling it.

Lumiere:

Your daily budget in Brazil is $75. This assumes two long bus rides a week totaling $130 US and a weekly sightseeing cost of $56 US.

Damn, Brazil is expensive. Daily expense of $75-140 is basically the budget I had in London, and that was an expensive town for a backpacker.

When I was backpacking around Italy, I think my daily expenses with train travel (they have cheap train travel) and hostels, and drinking at hostels (where there were hot girls everywhere), was like $40/day!

Damn, I couldn't imagine spending $140 a day in Rio unless you are really ballin out. I maybe spent $80-$100 and I balled out. I did also have a free place to stay though.

For $1500 a month you should have fun in Brazil without including a place to stay.

The more I read these travel budgets I swear to god I get brain warped I am definitely doing it wrong.

Do you guys travel for long periods and that brings the cost down?

When I travel abroad I am going hard everyday $100 a day spend minimum without accommodation.

I think short term rentals/high end hotels really do break the bank

Good points. I wonder a bit myself. I really want to learn more about just how much it costs to live some where. Like a database. If I just woke up one day and had a career ending meltdown, where can I go with my passive income? Where can I buy something to live in by using some savings. It might not be ideal to buy but it sort of locks in one of my costs and it is a known figure - except for government taxing etc.

A lot of the guys like to do the airbnb thing - I am used to being a flagged hotel when I travel. Except in the most remote of places. I guess airbnb ain't so bad but I would be a little concerned with valuables.

Shit 20nation is spending less in a month than I spent in my first 5 days in the SAME city of GDL. Lol fml. My first day in GDL I dropped $75 on cabs (excluding airport cab) because I hit 7 spots to find the right place for my "vibe".

You know I think the best data sheet would include

1. Where to stay (or where exactly is central location - a la roosh's bang Iceland)
2. Where the best place is to get cheap accommodation in the central location

The rest is a wash.

@yb if you can live off $1500 in São Paulo seriously you can fly out and visit me I'll cover the flight and your costs to party for a week all out, because that's absurd. São Paulo is more expensive than back to back DUIs

I just listed those cities above as my "away" games, lol. Sao Paulo, Vitoria, Porto Alegre, Goiania, etc etc. I'll most def be living in Curitiba though for my commitments there.

Back to back DUIs. I wonder what that would be like, lol.

TBH after visiting a good 25+ international cities I would say this.

Take top tier to top tier USA to South America, cut down by 25% max and that's your savings

To places like Japan = negative changes

To places like EE? No idea but according to numbers on here it sounds like a 40% cut down.

Anything beyond that and I'm seriously in shock and doing this

Jar of Foie Gras? $20.

Tuna Steak $7

If you plan on hitting any clubs the entrance fees to those will kill your bank probably more than anything.
