Car performance modifications

I have this old piece of shit car that I'm not using since I got a new one and I want to go to work on getting some more horses out of it. Primarily just for fun.
It's a 1000cc vauxhall Corsa '98. Yh real piece of shit.

I had my hopes on fitting a turbo or maybe even a supercharger but that is going to be a huge pain in the ass to do. Plus I don't think the engine could take it. With all that extra boost pressure in the cylinders I could see something breaking under the stress. I'm not sure how I'd reduce the compression ratio to prevent premature combustion either. Maybe a rebore but that's another load of problems.

Anyway, do any of you guys have any tips or advice on this sort of thing?
I'm primarily looking to get as much power as possible. It's just for fun and I don't currently drive that car so anything is a possibility.

My suggestion, suck it up, drive it as is. Put money aside to get something that doesn't suck. Fix broken stuff as much as is reasonable so you don't feel like you're driving a shit heap. It's better to have a car in good shape as opposed to one with a lot of bling and still junk.

I mentioned in the first sentence that I wasn't driving it anymore. I have a new car. This is for fun.
Please at least read the first sentence of the thread before you hand out your 'advice'.

So this is it? Nobody on this forum knows anything about cars?
El mech is busy with his blog so I don't expect him to post but he can't be the only dude on here with auto knowledge. Come on guys.

I wouldn't put too much cash into the blower/charger because it's only 1.0 if you can find used stuff for 500 or so it's ok. Don't worry about compression ratio. You'll figure out that you can only add about 6psi of boost before you will need intercoolers and bigger injectors etc. Can you trade it for something more fun to play with? GTi?

I know about cars but the last one I built was 7.5 liters, so there isn't much carryover there.

455 cubic inches. Fuck yes. [Image: biggrin.gif]

Go get a mgb-gt and do a rover V8 conversion or an opel gt and do a chevy v-6. Something you can cash out of when the time comes.

That Rover V8 is based off the 215 cube aluminum GM engine isn't it?

Olds turboed it and put it in what they called the Jetfire in '62.

Yup. It's light and you can pull plenty of power from it.

I'm kicking the idea around of building a car completely out of motorcycle salvage. A sick one and selling it as a kit after the parts list and prototype is made. If I only had the time

An MGB with a 250-300HP would be pretty fun. Probably twist the chassis like a pretzel but oh well. Shit like that is fun.

You and I think a lot alike. I once considered putting a 1000cc 3 cyl snowmobile engine (Arctic Cat Thundercat mill), about 180hp stock, in a Geo Metro for shits and giggles.

Woulda been a trip....

Been kicking around putting an STS turbo setup on the Avalanche. Only thing holding me back is mileage.... It's already not good...

I was going to put a v8 Evinrude two-stroker in a Triumph spitfire once with expansion pipes coming out the hood and all. Sick shit!

With all the Alphas on the board here I would think this thread would be 5 pages by now.

A V8 two stroke? I just popped wood....

For some reason, there doesn't seem to be many guys into cars/trucks/horsepower here. I've noticed this for a while.

Haha this is more like it!

I'm at work right now so I can't write much but I think the best thing to do now is just source a bigger engine and stick it in the corsa. The charger would have been nice though. Still I'll look around for any cheap ones.

Then I can take the 1.0 and put it on a go-kart! Let's hope I don't kill myself.

Looks like the Corsa is about the same size as a Geo Metro...

Walnuts, do you have any idea if GM used that platform under other models or what it's based on?

I found this with a quick search;

Kinda cool little car all done up.

Yeah, what the fuck is it? They don't send those here so we don't know how to fuck with them. What's the sickest motor the factory put in it? And made by who?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Corsa

No version of it was sold in the states it appears.

Looks like the biggest stove is a 1.6 4 banger.

Sounds like Walnuts ride has the 3 banger 1 liter. Even in Europe I'd be surprised if there is much for performance parts for that. The 1.6 might have some stuff.

I'd say fuck it and throw a small shot of nitrous on it. And if Walnuts doesn't care about grenading it, give it a bigger shot. [Image: biggrin.gif]

Hell, any increase in power would be pretty noticeable.

Lol I'll do some research when I leave work.

I think Vauxhall is the same as Opel. Different areas of the same company or something.
Will look it up when I get home.

Edit: Hotwheels, the thing is worth like $500 and half of that is the sound system that came with it from the guy I bought it from. I don't give a shit about grenading it. Let's go for the Nos!

Gas isn't going to do shit for that thing. Don't bother. If it's a 3cyl scrap the project or get a whole drivetrain to start with. If you can't make it pull a 14 sec 1/4 it's not worth spending time and money on because it just won't be fun enough. So that being said Google 13 sec Vauxhaul Corsa and see what they had to do to them. start there.

Was that drag race front wheel drive or did they swap the drivetrain? I couldn't tell.

Front drive a rear would never have traction like that with those little tires.

What's the budget? I assume that if you are looking to turbocharge it, you have some cash to dump into it.

If it's an automatic, one of the cheapest upgrades you can make is to the computer chip. It will make the transmission stay in the power band longer (as opposed to getting to the highest gear ASAP), and will boost HP by 10-15 and improve gas economy. Another cheap but effective upgrade is redoing the air intake and exhaust system. Just don't get a muffler that makes your car sound like a weed whacker.
