Lumiere - I have not logged on the forum for a week or two and I've missed you - would have been glad to wing with you. I understand you got the flag, right?
When you have a minute, you could post more about your experience and whether it matches that of those above. I am curious to see how well a foreigner did in Sofia, and how he liked it.

Yeah got the flag in sofia. Was in plovdiv before but found it too provincial. Much prefer sofia.

Am on the black sea coast now

Should be back in sofia this weekend if you want to meet for a beer

How long did it take you to get the flag (ie how long from when you met the girl until you closed)? I could never get a SNL over there, it usually took until the 2 or 3rd date

First night i met her she would not even kiss me even though i knew she liked me

At the end of the night invited her back for a nightcap. She said no because she knew we would have sex if she came back to my place and that it did not fit with her morals

Sent her a flirty text the next day and she replied by telling me she regretted being too moral and basically apologised for not having sex with me

I told her to meet me for a drink same night and correct her mistake. She turns up except this time no resistance.

Spent the night dancing, making out and drinking in the bar.

Spent the night and the following 2 nights banging.

She took me too some cool private parties, introduced me to her friends.

Cool girl.

So basically it was a day 2 lay which happened 24 hours after i met her (delayed due to her rules about not banging guys on day 1)

Sounds alot like my experiences there. Where did you meet her? Which bar/club?

Met her online. Took her to a few places but mainly rocknrolla.

Have you found any place in the Balkans where you could see yourself dropping anchor for say, six months?

Rock'n'Rolla is a place which a lot of foreigners will like, as it would never play balkan music which may be unfamiliar and offensive to the ears of those unused to it. It only blasts classic rock bands like AC/DC, Metallica, White Snake, etc. There is also karaoke.
Not the greatest place to go pickup new prospects (although possible) but if you already have a date then it's great.
Perhaps we should make a data sheet for Sofia one of these days.

Yeah rocknrolla is my favourite bar in Sofia so far. Unlike the name suggests, it not a sawdust-on-the-floor gritty rock bar. Someone has obviously spent some $$$ furnishing the place and it even has bottle service and table rervations.

Its kinda like a high-end club but with decent rock music. Place gets jammed too even on Monday nights.

Where would be a good place to pickup new prospects (as a foreigner)?

In Sofia, I know there are a lot of small bars. While these bars are lively and cool, they are not crowed to the point where lots of people are standing so people tend to be sitting at tables. I went to a DJ event in Sofia that was at a huge venue but the music was so loud it was impossible to talk to anyone. I prefer places that gets crowded enough that there are number of people standing at the bar and where the music volume is such you can talk to people in at the bar.

Please keep the intel coming! I'm anxiously following your posts and trying to decide whether to make Sofia a long stop or a short stop.
What are the prospects for a decent looking guy going in cold? Do you think pipelining is the way to go after your experience, or are there a lot of day game opportunities for sport fishing?

Also, would you be willing to do some recon work over there? You said she introduced you to a bunch of friends... tell her you've got a friend coming in about a month. I make friends VERY easily and make a good impression, just so you won't have to worry about vouching for some schlub. I know the social circle thing is important there, so I imagine that a "letter of reference" would go a long way!

... funerals are insane, the chicks are so horny, its not even fair, its like fishing with dynamite ... Ma!!! The meat loaf!!!

Been saying this for a while. Sofia is a great city. Not too big, not too small, cool young people and very inexpensive.

I thought it was the worst country in the Balkans personally.

The food is good and cheap, IMO. Lot's of Doner & Pizza places. Great yogurt & salads. They have American chains like Starbucks, Mc Donalds, KFC, and Subway. They have Sushi, Italian, and a nice cal-mex joint called Taqueria. The local food is also good, similar to Russian I guess.

Hmm... it depends on your preference for type of girls, and on your age and status, I guess. There are places with very different demographics. I will try to group them:

High End
Places to dress up, order bottle service, and try to pick up a beauty - but she may be looking to get picked up by a local drug dealer or thug who will spend money on her. Lots of shiny new BMW's and Benz's parked outside. I imagine someone like the G Manifesto would enjoy these places and be successful there.
Planet Club - this is very close to Alexander Nevsky cathedral, a tall church with a gold dome that is an easily spotted landmark. Not sure why it's called Planet Club as it's actually a bar, but people do dance between the tables as the party starts later in the night. Shiny and fashionable, girls are pretty but may be snobby.
Bedroom - close to the Parliament, another landmark, so it's easy to find. Entrance is not very prominent, the club is below street level and not too big but very high quality girls usually. Expect attitudes.
Sin City - you may walk to it from the center (10 minutes) or take a cab. If you ask people, they know where it is. Has 4-5 rooms with different music, techno, oldies, balkan folk, etc. (the latter is the loudest and fullest room, may not be very tolerable by foreigners)

Mid End
Ginger - one of my favorites, usually has good male:female ratio, but I've only been on Fridays and Saturdays. May not be full on weekdays. Music is funky and unusual for this town. It's right by NDK (everyone knows where this is - a big congress center from Communist times) in a subway.
Brilliantine - also a favorite, many foreigners go there, girls are used to being hit on by foreigners, it is right next to the British Embassy (no drunk brits on stag parties, though). Always full after 12, even Mondays. Girls may be in groups though, with guys in the group too, and there is no dance floor so you might need to approach them as they sit on their tables. Music is 80s-90s but definitely not a cheesy oldies bar of the US variety.
Gramophone - on Dondukov St right accross from the Kama Sutra titty bar where a lot of foreigners go. It is only full on weekends, but a pretty cool bar/club.
Tobacco - this is an outside cafe behind the National Art Gallery that has a small inside room with a DJ too but the main attraction in warmer months is to sit outside, some tables are sit-down and some are tall and just to leave your drinks on, so those may be easier to approach. Great for starting off the night.

Lower End
I can't list all of these, but most noteworthy are the clubs that are in a cluster around Jim Beam in the Student City part of town. Obviously, Jim Beam is an american themed meat-market type of bar/club, and there are 3-4 others right next to it which you can bar-hop as the cover is only $3 or so on weekends and some weekdays there is no cover. They are mostly balkan folk music which the local girls love. Bottle service is dirt cheap (like $30 for Johnie Walker Red on weekdays and $50 on weekends). You may need to be with a local to get these prices, though.
You need to take a cab to Student Town ($5 or so but the cabbie may try to screw a foreigner).
These usually are full every day (except Sunday) but you may need to bar-hop to find out where the party's at on that particular night.

Date Places
If you already have a date, here are some good places to take her:
Culture Beat - this is also by NDK, right on the back of the building actually. I'm amazed why this place does not get a better turnout, it is very fashionably furnished and good music, different every night.
Rock'n'Rolla - already discussed above, good if you are a classic rock fan.
Memento - this is a very cool bar with both an indoor and outdoor section. Weekdays they have different theme nights, with Brasilian music, drum'n'base, etc. On the corner of Rakovski and Gurko St. in the center (walkable).

Enjoy!

Have not been to any of the places that you mentioned although I did go to Brilliantine last sat night with a chick but, by 3am, it was full and not letting anyone in.

Should be back in Sofia tomorrow or Sunday.

the balkan folk / chalga places are great to pull the girls for a shag or two if you can tolerate the ''music'' and have or pretend to have money
