I just started using tomatoes, the taste is growing on me.

Ray, I'll check that out. I also got recipes from Mike. How does the bok choi taste?

I like to slice my tomatoes and up lemon and salt on them.

I started with juicing last week. I got a juicer from amazon and Fit Juice from Mike.

I tried a few recipes from the book, however at the end I modified it and mixed a few of the recipes for my own juice.

Today I tried the following (inspired by Mike):
  • 6 bok choi leaves
  • 3 small lemons
  • 0.5 inch ginger
  • 6 carrots
Quite tasty if you ask me and it gives about 24 oz of juices.

Anything to criticize on that recipe? My main goal of juicing is to improve my immune system right now.

I use that recipe and variations on it as a post-meal or non-workout day lunch juice. It doesn't really get me going the same way something with beets does, but it's refreshing and helps out with restricting calories. You may gradually want to increase the bok choi leaves and/or add other leafy greens while reducing the carrots to lower the sugar content, depending on whether you need the spike in sugar levels for heavy activity or not.

Yeah, the sugar content is a little high with that recipe due to the carrots, however I do not really mind. In my normal diet, I restrict the sugar in take, e.g. I don't drink any sodas or put sweet stuff into my body.

I usually take the juice after work, before I start with my evening work-out. After all, I have feel more energized on my juice days, which makes it easier to work on private projects or to study a language.

A big improvement for my life.

Hey MikeCF,

I am just curious to find out an answer to a question. What's your opinion on why a person's skin would turn orange after eating too many carrots? There are two theories out there:

1. It's due to the accumulation of carotene in the body. But this does not explain why the skin goes back to normal even when you continue eating or juicing carrots.

2. It's because of the cleaning effect that the carrots have on the liver. The reaction is so strong that the liver dumps all the waste into the lymph system which causes your skin to turn orange.

I avoided it so far because raw cucumber usually gives me digestive issues, though I haven't eaten any in a couple years now.

Dad and I got our first cucumbers out of the garden today and I have to admit cucumbers are a lot better in juice form. A small cucumber eliminated the bitterness of 4 beets with leaves. The beets we are growing are coming in much smaller than the ones in grocery stores but have the same amount of leaves, so the reduction in bitterness is much appreciated.

I was looking at the new NutriBullet RX

http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Bullet-Nutri...B00N9IG28O about $183 on Amazon with free USA Shipping... The gist of the RX is it spins at high 30,0000 RPM with a 2hp motor and the promos say "disintegrates the cellular structure" of plants and fruits and extracts the nutrients from them including fibrous kale, swiss chard, beet roots and greens etc - I recently bought an Oster base replacement kit (Broke my old base ring) with the stainless Ice Crusher blade ($11 WalMart) and it makes great smoothies but blades can get fouled with heavy fiber fruit - pineapples, mangoes etc so dropping in a couple Ice cubes at high speed seems to clear the blades - so was curious if anyone actually tried these much more powerful extractor systems and if they notice any of the claims - more nutrients "extracted" so more energy etc?

I also bought the kindle version of http://www.amazon.com/NutriBullet-Diabet...505631653/

NutriBullet Diabetic Recipe Book: 200 NutriBullet Diabetic Friendly Ultra Low Carb Delicious and Nutritious Blast and Smoothie Recipes

The idea is to extract more nutrients than carbs and sugars - some funky recipes for the extractor that may not work so well in my Oster blender/smoothie maker as it is not as powerful as an Extractador... will give it a try and see though...

2 hp is about the same power as a vitamix. I bet the vitamix is far more durable than that nutribullet. You get what you pay for.

Currently rocking 4 broccoli, handful of winter greens (various leaves of kale type stuff), a cooking apple, a couple of carrots. This was a bit 'strong', so the magic ingredients were a grapefruit plus a small bit of ginger. Very drinkable and must be good for you with that amount of green veg in it.

Quick shoutout to Omega.

I bought the Omega J8006 juicer about a year ago as per MikeCF recommendation. The 15 year warranty was a factor in dropping that much money - I liked knowing that if I was going to buy the Cadillac of juicers, I would get good service.

I recently broke my juicing screen (heavy beet and carrot use). I submitted a claim and that day they emailed me asking for a picture and if my address was right.

Today I not only got a new juicing screen but also the housing (whatever the big plastic part is that holds the screen). Even though mine is not broken, I appreciate the gesture as mine was getting dirty from all the vegetables.

Most importantly: 12 day turnaround from claim to receiving the replacement.

Overall 10/10 customer service WC (would claim).

I bought a Big Mouth juicer for $30.
Used only a few times allegedly.
So far it's been a good investment.

10 lb bag of beets and 10 lb bag of carrots for $2 each last week.
Been juicing the beets skin on (with carrot celery kale) and my dumps look like aborted fetuses.
Made meatloaf tonight with the pulp. Was ok.

I take the juice to work and sip it throughout the day. Not sure how to best incorporate into my lifestyle but that's how I have been doing it.

That's a normal side effect of beet juice. As long as that just started with your beet juice consumption, you have nothing to worry about.

Try to get some lemon juice in that mixture if you're making a lot and drinking it over the course of the day. Citrus helps to preserve the fresh flavor if you're not drinking it all right away.

I do not. My omega juicer can handle them just fine with the rind on. It's wasted effort to peel them.

24 to 32. The yield from day to day is inconsistent since vegetables are not exactly the same size every time, and sometimes I feel like more beets, tomatoes, or carrots to adjust the taste between sweet and bitter.

I had fresh non-bottled non-storebought vegetable juice for the first time earlier today, from Planet Smoothie at New York Penn Station. All you NY heads check this place out if you haven't… fresh fruit/veggie juices that they make right in front of you and the smoothies are the bomb diggety too.

I got an apple/kale/carrot/beet juice in the afternoon and a strawberry banana protein smoothie for lunch, and later I got an apple/kale/ginger root/celery juice and a chocolate banana protein smoothie before getting on the train. Maybe part of this is placebo effect but I felt way better shortly after drinking each. Instant energy and powerful feelings.

I'm now thoroughly sold on juicing and will be ordering a juicer from Amazon shortly.

If I remember correctly, there are some oils or something like that in the peel that can make some people uncomfortable in the stomach, and of course traces of pesticides if they are used. Then again, lots of good minerals and vitamins are in the peel.

In favor of my recent commitment towards healthier living I went out and got myself a juicer. However, only fruits I had at home were grapes and kiwi, and it turns out neither is a great fit for a juicer. 6 entire kiwis and a lb of grapes only produced about 1 tall glass of juice and afterwards I cleaned out chunks of completely intact unprocessed fruit off the thing. I mean it tasted great and I bet it was healthier than the diet coke I usually drink but the yield was quite low.

Any recommendations on fruits/vegetables that do well in these things? Maybe in the form of a price/overall health benefit ratio.

Today I'm trying apple, pear, carrots and kale.

We need to know what juicer you have to give you recommendations. In general though, carrots will always be a good choice.

I think I will pick up a juicer on black friday. I won a one day juice cleanse at one of the yoga studios I work at, I didn't do the cleanse, but the prize was 7 juices, mixed fresh, very healthy, and tasty. I'm sold.

Hope to get a deal on a juicer on black friday, either amazon or walmart hopefully come through.

I don't get it, why would you only extract what is basically just sugar water when you could blend the fruits and veggies into a smoothie and also get ALL of the vitamins plus dome filling fiber?
