Young Americans Are the "Go-Nowhere Generation"

AMERICANS are supposed to be mobile and even pushy. ...
But sometime in the past 30 years, someone has hit the brakes and Americans — particularly young Americans — have become risk-averse and sedentary. ...
The likelihood of 20-somethings moving to another state has dropped well over 40 percent since the 1980s, according to calculations based on Census Bureau data. ...
For about $200, young Nevadans who face a statewide 13 percent jobless rate can hop a Greyhound bus to North Dakota, where they’ll find a welcome sign and a 3.3 percent rate. ...
Perhaps more worrisome, kids who grow up during tough economic times also tend to believe that luck plays a bigger role in their success, which breeds complacency. ...
Unfortunately, societies that emphasize luck over logic are not likely to thrive.

I think the economy has more to do with this than anything else, but there is definitely a noticeable decline in the American adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit.

That's individuals too..
I find myself having to snap myself out of the " my luck will change" mentality if I've been having a bad time of it for a while, back to the "only I can change things" mentality.

So easy to wait for "things" to change.

Young Americans Are the "Go-Nowhere Generation"

From my experience, USA teaches children the following:

Graduate from high school

Go to college

Get a job with "insert big name corporation"

Go to graduate school

Work your way up the ladder

Get married

Get a 30 year mortgage

I do feel that the entrepreneurial spirit has been lost a tad bit and Americans are indoctrinated into the thought process I mentioned above. I have seen the mention of the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad on the RVF a few times, and the author's "Poor Dad" resembles American parents today. Perhaps with the way the economy is now, more people will begin to work for themselves....or just rely on Uncle Sam.

The government controls over 20% of the economy, making it extremely difficult for entrepreneurs to survive.

In a lot of ways government stifles entrepreneurs, but in some ways savvy entrepreneurs can take advantage of what the government is doing. Thats why the DC economy is booming - people getting huge govt contracts

You're right, that picture was too patronizing to Tuth. I just google posted an image to get my point across. Here's the same pic without the bullshit:

The government is the biggest, baddest corporation around today.

They put in regulations that keep the smaller corporations in power, crowding out the small guy.

Except regulation is lower than its been in 30 years. How do you think these companies can make stuff in China and India for pennies on the dollar? No regulation.

And, that chart is silly. It's comparing expenditure with profit. A weird, perplexing comparison.

It's pointless to have this discussion, because anti-government types will always blame "the government." The government is what we make it. Right now, the government = the corporations, since they own every senator, president, and candidate. So, in a way, we're both right.

Famous pyschologist says that the problem is men: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/zimchallenge.html

Towards the end he lists what women want: a good partner, intimacy, someone who knows how to dance, and then claims how men have totally failed in this mission to please them. Women are not faulted or criticized. The "demise" of not men is of course not due to a lack of incentives that men have to participate in the race to please increasingly ugly women. The problem is internet, porn, male weakness, and lack of drive.

That same benefit also works for the small AND big business. What would regulating this do, except put more power in the hands of big businesses who have the money to navigate the sea of laws and regulations?

Money is power.

Who spends the most has the most power.

It's true that the government and big business are intertwined, but I can't see how more regulations are going to help anything.

You said it yourself - all the senators, presidents, and other candidates are owned.

So how can we expect them to make regulations to stop big businesses? We can't, which is why the best solution is to take power away from the government.

Lots of guys bitch about the economy.

North Dakota is booming.

How many guys are moving?

American men generally are insufferable pussies.

Indeed the only reason women are running shit is because men are too pussified to put up a fight.

Regulation is only lower for the bigger companies. Meanwhile, small business gets shafted on the regular. I don't know why but people just love to lump all corporations together.

Take the FTC regulations over internet marketing for instance - the ones they changed dramatically in 2009 or so, it affected small entrepreneurs the most... Or look at the tax loopholes, unless your company has the money to hire the best accountants and bookkeepers, you just can't take advantage of them...

A small restaurant around the corner is a corporation too.

Exactly. That's what's crushing small business and the entrepreneurial spirit: a conspiracy between large multinationals and shitty, corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle who depend on their skrilla to win increasingly expensive elections. They can't rock the boat, because the corps will pull their cash if they start saying shit that doesn't jibe with they want them to say. There are no "aisles" in this country. Democrats now = Republicans. It's one giant corporate party.

When I say corporations, I don't mean the little guy. I mean GE, Exxon-Mobil, Apple, Wal-Mart, those guys. They pay no taxes, ship jobs abroad, get massive tax refunds, and keep leaning on these turds for more concessions. That harms all of us, but we can't say fucking shit about it. They own our asses.

I love that this is prevalent thinking, but meanwhile you get put on a watch list because you only ask that women be slender, feminine and put together.

Anyone else think that part of it is because America used to stand for honor, charity, liberty and freedom, and now it stands for political correctness, keeping-up-with-the-Joneses, the belief that the world owes you something and the outlawing of all the freedoms our grandparents enjoyed? Why would anyone rush to assimilate themselves into a system they have no respect for?
