Health: Green Tea

Have been drinking pots of green tea for years now. Helps me focus and the ritual of making it is something I really enjoy. Chicks really like how seriously I take brewing it. They have usually never seen someone make a proper pot.

Gyokoro is on the expensive side but my favorite kind.

Brew it in a bodum pot...important not to let it steep for too long so it doesn't get bitter. 2 or 3 minutes max.

A pro tip is if you dont drink the entire pot, us the extra to wash your face and put some in your hair for immediate glowing skin and thicker hair.

Do you guys have any sources to recommend? A local grocery store has a very good Chinese green tea for dirt cheap, $0.69 an ounce.

Maybe a cheap (sub-$3 per ounce) Japanese Sencha without stems, if such a thing exists.

Loose leaf only, teabags are lame.

I wouldn't knock teabags just because they're in bags. but most bagged tea is shit quality. Your best bet is probably a specialty store/tea bar. More and more are popping up in New England

I drink primarily Matcha green tea, it is one of the most potent green teas out there, link

I also drink sencha which is flavored with real dryed ananas pieces. Really like the taste and freshness of it.

I try to drink one cup of coffee(morning), two cups of green tea and one cup of black tea per day [Image: tard.gif]

How is that powdered green tea?

Matcha tea goes for about five times that, and is costly to make, so its definitely not the same thing. I've only had it once, at an authentic Japanese tea ceremony.

Yeah that is apparently 20 % matcha and rest are brown rice solids.

Matcha tastes great and makes you awake like coffee but without the nervousness. Much better than regular green tea but not for those living on a tight budget.

I get that feeling from regular green tea - alertness without the jitters, and a satisfying sense of relaxation. Maybe you tried really shitty green tea that was low in theanine, or your body just responds differently. Maybe try some good Japanese sencha.

While I'm a fan of green tea, my favorite tea is Chai.

Been making a lot of green ice tea for the summer. I usually add a little ginger tea as well and drink it with fresh lemon and no sugar.

I usually buy sencha green tea by YAMAmotoYAMA.

I normally use 8 ounces per tea bag. Tastes amazing.

Bulk Barn carries a bunch of decent loose leaf tea at good prices. I just got some vanilla rooibos, ginseng green tea and some gunpowder green. I was getting organic gunpowder green in teabag form and it was costing me a small fortune, the bulk barn stuff is the exact same shit for a quarter of the price.. The leaves are steamed and curl up into little balls. Best green tea i've had.

I've finally caved and decided to drop the energy drinks and make the switch to green tea.

today's the first day, and so far i love it. i think it's something I'll be able to stick with.

i bought the 100 pack from costco for about $12, should work out to considerably cheaper then the red bulls, monsters and 5 hours I've been abusing for the last 10+ years

Just read a article in some kind of health magazine where a University tested a bunch of people and gave half a placebo pill and the other half a green tea supplement equal to 10 glasses of green tea a day. An 6 weeks later the people taking green tea lost either 36% or 63% more fat the the people given the placebo (I know theres a big difference between the 2 but they called my named at the doctors office where I was reading the article and I just skimmed the end pretty quickly) The last sentence admitted that drinking 10 glasses a day was a lot but then it mentioned the other benefits from drinking green tea such as healthier hearts, may help against cancer ect.

Anyone eat the leaves raw from their tea bags? Or use them in a salad or blend them into a smoothie? I'm going to brew a big pot of green tea and stir in some honey whiles its hot, then put it in a pitcher and put it in the fridge so I can drink more tea daily. I have been brewing 2 mugs of hot tea a day but I wish to consume more...

Health: Green Tea

I've been drinking green tea for years. It's a habit I picked up when I used to live with my grandmother. Whether she was eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner, she would always
make sure she drank a cup of green tea with it. She says it's a Cuban tradition that's been in her family for a while. Anyways, Cr33pin's post kind of got me interested in what
the benefits of drinking green tea are since I've been oblivious to what they are. I did some searching and this is what I found.
  • Green tea contains catechins. Catechins are supposedly more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties.
  • There are studies that show there's an association between consuming green tea and a reduced risk for several cancers, including skin, breast, lung, colon, esophagael, and bladder.
  • Regular consumption of green and black teas include a reduced risk for heart disease. The antioxidants in green, black, and oolong teas can help block the oxidation of LDL(bad) cholesterol, increase HDL(good) cholesterol and improve artery function. Consumers of oolong or green tea showed a 45-46% reduction in hypertension risk compared to non-consumers of green tea.
  • To reap the full benefits of green tea, the ideal consumption amount seems to be three cups per day. Allow the tea to steep for 3 to 5 minutes to bring out its catechins.
  • Decaffeinated, bottled ready-to-drink and instant teas have less catechins. (I wonder if that includes Lipton's packaged green tea as well)
  • Though there's not much evidence of this, green tea is said to help with wrinkles and signs of aging due to its high content of antioxidants.
  • Green tea—or any tea—can impede the absorption of iron from fruits and vegetables; adding lemon or milk or drinking tea between meals will counteract this problem.

I drink loose green or white tea daily, usually 2-5 cups. Tastes great and gives me a very balanced alertness.

Thinking about eating the leaves, but they taste absolutely terrible straight from the steeper. I have some Japanese powdered green tea and I think there may be extra benefits to eating the solids as opposed to tossing the leftover leaves once they're steeped through. In Burma they make a fermented tea leaf salad, which I enjoyed recently without thinking of the potential health benefits.

Other than making a Burmese lahpet, I can only think to cook rice in tea-steeped boiling water, just keep the leaves in and enjoy with a meal. Or perhaps put leaves in a soup to add flavor.

I'm down to experiment but have never cooked with tea before. Could be an easy way to increase intake and add a twist to meals.

I'm late to the green tea game, but have been drinking daily for two and a half weeks and am really surprised how constant and smooth my energy has been, without the ups and downs of coffee or black tea. My mood is also more stable... I'm not getting the winter moodiness like usual. I love coffee, but am more hesitant to drink it now because of the hangover that results.

I'll keep at it and give a full report in a month or two.

Better later then never. Stick with it, I have been drinking green tea daily for 4 or 5 years now. I love it. It only has healthy benefits.

I've tried all different kinds of green teas and lived in Asia for three years, drinking green tea daily.

It's more expensive but I find the powder green tea to best tastiest, the freshest-feeling, and overall healthiest.

You can find good powder tea at a specialty Asian tea shop. If that's not available, this is a good overall Japanese matcha powder tea.

Cool thank you Yeti! I have access to an Asian tea shop, should I just ask an old Asian lady in there which kind to buy?

Sounds amazing and perfect for what i need now. But my concern is green tea is a diuretic. And I tend to get dehydrated easily. Is this also an issue for anyone?

That's always a good idea. Or, just say that you want Japanese matcha tea. Make sure that it's made in Japan (they're usually from Kyoto or Uji, but anywhere in Japan is fine). It may also be from Taiwan or China, but I find that the best-tasting powder tea comes from Japan.

Green tea does not dehydrate, it hydrates. Pretty much my only liquid intake in the morning and at night is green tea (I drink water during the day and a bit of coffee).

Here's a BBC article about the health benefits of tea, including its ability to hydrate:
Tea 'healthier' drink than water

Drinking two or more cups of green tea per day is one of the healthiest things that you can do.
