@VP
now that the war betw. mixx and the other thread posters are over, maybe we'll have some room for some straight normal dope.
me: i'm asian, 42, 6', 230lbs. i'd judge myself a 6/10 and, yes, i've done ukraine. 5 wks in may 2008 or so. knock off 3 years and 40 lbs and that was me back then. i went there more as a backpacker (w/bigger budget) to check out sights -- not so much as a gamer or sex tourist but i of course leave myself open to the possibilities...went there almost at the last min. with no prep. (didn't bring russian-english dictionary, no cyrillic, regular phone, couldn't even count to 10, etc..)
basically i went there raw as can be. what can i say? i like a challenge!
tho my memories are pretty vivid, i'm not gonna do a datasheet because my intel is obviously dated. that said, there's some things that will never change and if i go back in know what i'd do different.
pipelining via internet: don't care which website you use but just be prepped for low yields (<10%). sites come and go and i guess mamba.ru is just as decent as any for now. like the other guys said DONT SEND MONEY
cities visited: i did the triangle of kiev-odessa-donetsk with splitoffs to kherson, mariupol and lugansk.
my travel philosophy in general: i'm anticonventional; tell me a place sucks and it's automatically on my "do" list. i'm totally nietzsche in that what doesn't kill me will strengthen me. i don't have endless bank to go with but unlike some tightwads around here i'm ok with acceptable losses -- all part of the learning experience. neither do i care about the big city/small city thing; if you run into a girl giving you the wink and she's dtf then the game begins! BOOM!
my impressions: kiev is one of the world's great cities. yes it's fricking overpriced (my standard for defining hotel room price/quality is vegas; what's a $100 nondiscount room in vegas goes for $200-300 in kiev back then -- it's likely this gauge has since shifted.) that said, you're options turn quick to stalinist era hotels and apartments (i'm sure those are still around...and at inflated prices too....) if you're willing to be tourist there's stuff to see and do there (like the monastery.) ex: the subway stations closer to the city center are architecturally ornate and gorgeous.
i don't get the beef about food in ukraine sucking. the country has its own millionaires and billionaires who have traveled widely (like the klitschko brothers) but choose to make ukraine home. plain economics say that they will demand improved dining and entertainment options locally. there's places in the city that are 1st world class -- just be prepared to pay through the nose for it -- just as there are food dumps (yes they have mickey d's and even an upscale tgifridays.) fwiw, one of the finest meals i had in ukraine was in lugansk -- a georgian restaurant. a little pricey but go figure. for regular meals the offerings are, i would agree, grim.
those that want to complain about food should do india -- curry flavors, chicken and lamb, near vegetarian everywhere and NO BEEF until the day you leave. now that deserves the bad wtf.
if you do try ukrainian restaurants be sure to try the mushroom soup. ukrainians do mushroom soup like nobody's business! also do strawberries. they may look runty and underdeveloped but they're just about the best i've ever tasted (i think it's cos they're nearly organic vs. the pesticide and growth hormone loaded oversized crap here at the local safeway...)
so enough about food. the girls?
i'd agree with greek & hooligan re: general approach strategy. ONS won't be common unless you're in a big/university city (i think kiev and kharkiv would be best cos they have subway systems -- that way you can cold approach as clueless tourist) and flash the bennies in attitude. the mail order bride thing is established enough in the country so i think one strategy you can try is the "heartbroken/jilted mail order guy from...with days left in his stay" line.
where i'd differ from greek is i see no reason to avoid odessa (yes the young hotties generate a lot of noise but there's enough supply of 22+ girls getting desperate) or cities that suck (if a city sucks then chances get good you'll be the only man of your country there -- nothing wrong with that!)
most folks here seem to be of the pussy quantity mold and prefer "one and done." as for me, i'm be more of the "multiday lay" mode (i'd rather score a hot 7-9 for a week and wear her out.) maybe it's my age getting to me but i'm not interested in 16-18's with a propensity to flake (not that i'll EVER refuse them

); getting good yield for my efforts matter more to me...
as for logistics: i'm sure you can now check out airbnb and couchsurfing to prep for whatever city you plan to land in. i'm sure there's more ukrainian sites that offer this stuff now compared to 2008. with euro 2012 in town i'm sure the city's now more tourist friendly....
the last tip i can offer (which i think is still good) is 1st night logistics. here goes:
assuming you land at kiev boryspil and don't know anyone, your best bet is to bite the bullet and get $usd50 equivalent from the airport atm and break it into smaller change. then head out the terminal door and look for the large coaches that have "voksal" on them. those coaches will take you to the train station -- thereby cashing in your 1st money saving op: dodging the airport surcharge on taxis.
once you get to the train station you'll be unloaded on the "new" side. haul your stuff in and over the skybridge to the "old" side. this is the central part of the train station. go out the main entrance and directly at your feet ahead will be babushkas offering "kommunata" or "kvartira" (spelling?) if you haven't gotten living arrangements yet this is the place to start haggling.
to your left and you'll see a roundish building with lots of people entering and leaving -- that's the entrance to the subway station. the system uses tokens. if you have large coins the babushka in the window will make change for you.
if you HAVE to do a hotel in kiev i'd pick "hotel tourist." it's modern and clean enough but more importantly has bang for buck. more importantly it's near a subway station (livorberezhnya i think) and in the lobby there's a tourist desk (if you need train, bus or minibus (marshrutka) they should be able to help.) it's also across the street from a mickey d's and 1 stop from hydropark (assuming there's still something remaining to the day this should be a good spot to begin your pickups. )
i don't know if hotel tourist is "girl friendly."
i could get more granular than that but that info would have a risk of being dated. pm me if you want other more.
