Like kosko said, many of the highest-paying jobs in America are located in diverse places (Silicon Valley, Austin, Chicago, NY, parts of Florida, Minneapolis, Atlanta, etc).
Don't care about jobs, I am all set.
Even if one is looking for a job, the cost of living must be factored against higher wages. Slicon Valley has tons of jobs that pay $100k per year, but at $100k per year, many people are struggling due to insane housing prices.
Affordable housing was on my list of criteria. I have budgeted $3k or less for a little townhouse or house in the boonies, but ~$2k would be preferable. I haven't lived in the U.S. for over 5 years so that may be unrealistic.
