The Great Wall of China. Militarily it was never breached I understand (only as a result of politics). The Mongol horde's great strength was their cavalry and resultant mobility. A bloody great wall put a control on that for a couple of thousand years.
Next, Hadrian's Wall in England. Started in AD122, it became the northern limit of the Roman Empire, built to separate the Romans from the 'Barbarians' (my own ancestors!), which it did effectively (at huge financial cost) for more than 300 years. I walk the dog along it several times a year.
