It's much worse than this article portrays. Transgender surgery is actually considered tax deductible for most people in the U.S. As an example (from a U.S. Tax Court case from a few years ago), a man who felt he was a woman trapped in a male body was diagnosed with gender‐identity disorder. He tried to deduct $22,000 in medical costs for multiple surgeries, including hormone therapy, sexual‐reassignment surgeries, and breast augmentation, in order to become a woman. The IRS allowed the costs of the hormone therapy and sex‐change operation as qualified medical expenses because those procedures helped treat a disease, but they disallowed the cost of breast augmentation, saying it was nondeductible cosmetic surgery.
So basically all of those Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner's running around out there can deduct the cost of butterflying their dicks on their taxes, and it's totally legal. If the IRS treats this as as mental illness, why won't society at large?
