It should be treated as a condition, not a sexual orientation. I am willing to accept that pedophiles have an unfortunate wiring of the brain that makes then that way, in the same way gays brains aren't right. But to gain acceptance from society, they need to be physically (not chemically) castrated.

Nearly ten years ago, a friend of mine was falsely accused of molesting a kid. He had to undergo a "treatment" plan through "Care-Net" (not the crisis pregnancy group). His evaluations concluded that he had no inclinations toward pedophilia, yet he still had to go through the therapy, which essentially was nothing more than a Pavlovian conditioning program where he was actually shown kiddie porn while having odors like rotten meat and burning flesh piped into his nose.
The courts had to play fast and loose with the laws to be able to charge him with an actual crime (apparently in that jurisdiction, it's a sex crime for an adult male to take an unrelated child to the bathroom), as the accusers stories kept changing, and his psych evaluations all said he was pretty much innocent. Still had to serve 3 months in jail, a few years of probation, and of course, had to go on the registry.

Although I find this story hard to believe (but not impossible), you do bring up valid points of having harsh punishments for child molesters leading to harsh punishments for innocent men (and maybe even women). In general, pedophile women aren't as much of a threat as pedo men are. If a woman abuses a boy, there is probably a much greater chance he'll be okay when he grows up than a girl. Girls are far more fragile both as children and adults then men. Everyone knows how quickly women are damaged by sex versus men. I assume the same must be true for male and female children as well.

All in all, the only real way I believe we could determine if a man is a pedophile is to strap some kind of blood monitoring device to his dick while showing him "risque" images of children. If the dick engorges we know he is a pedo and must be dealt with.
