The only one who fits the bill of 'ruthless businessman' in the time frame mentioned is GW Bush. And he failed spectacularly in terms of making tough choices, cutting the deficit and making America more competitive. Disco_Volante's description of what sort of president we need right now is one we haven't seen since Warren Harding, and most historians wrongly think he was a failure. The most common presidential occupation is lawyer.
Even if Trump had the greatest views ever and was guaranteed to catapult the country to the promise land, he wouldn't win just because he rubs people the wrong way and/or is considered to be a joke. He'll never be able to avoid the torrent of 'gotcha' traps that any non-left candidate will have to face, and given that all it takes is one to sink such a candidate, you can pretty much write him off right now.
