I think most women would find a man who protects women from physical danger to be attractive, so it is alpha. Remember Mystery's "Protector of Loved Ones" maxim?
White knighting isn't just protecting women, it's protecting women unjustifiably. For example, a whore who yells at some dude for no reason, gets smacked in the face and then is saved:

That's white knighting, because the whore in this case didn't deserve to be saved, and yet men rushed in to her aid afterwards.
But a girl watching a movie and is then threatened by a crazy gunman? Bringing down the madman is definitely an alpha move, or even protecting your loved ones from harm by taking a bullet.
That said - what's the point of being alpha if you're dead?
