I think that's due to you being in Beijing. I have never been there and have no desire to ever visit. Chinese people from second generation wealth (which come closer to westerners in terms of mentality) from other cities told me that's where Chinese people go to try to "make it" much like in LA and you'll have a lot of fake people that big talk about themselves or give you "yeah we should totally do big biz together in the future" before they disappear. Also much more hardcore nationalists down there.
