Likely it's an attempt to boost her own value. How attractive is she compared to her peers? If she's normal or average in looks, her guy friends are buoying her fragile ego. If she's one of the better looking girls, then guy friends means she got some sort of self esteem issues (an absentee father? a smarter, more accomplished sister?) and she's trying to assert herself to a higher spot in the social hierarchy.
