I'm no Indian pro. Just saying I worked with a guy of Punjabi descent in Toronto and he was a very large strong guy. He also knew what he was working with and didn't shy away from showing this. I also played ball with another cat who was also of Punjabi descent and this dude was also large and strong. Not sure of the other Indian sects/tribes but these two cats definitely shat on that meek IRT strain one may see on this side of the pond from my modest experience.

Different immigration patterns. Punjabi people tend to come from villages, are not educated and are a lot more “earthy”. Basically every Indian I grew up around in UK was Punjabi. A lot of the guys I grew up with were in and out of jail and a lot of the had white babymamas. Punjabis are known for partying, getting into fights and heavy drinkers.

A lot of the IRTs are from more educated strict families (usually South Indian) where they were not allowed to do shit whilst growing up. Eating meat is daring for these guys, let alone consuming alcohol. These guys are IT/engineering faggots.

A lot of non-Punjabi Indians look down on Punjabis – they think they’re a bit “rough”.

Unlike the other Indian guy this was actually has some decent basketball skills. There's no reason he can't be a Hibbert type of player with stretch 5 abilities. If you're 7'2 300 lbs then all you have to do is stand in the paint with your arms up and you'll be an elite rim protector. Your team will give up midrange shots but the midrange is a lost art anyway.

Its for sure just a matter of time before there are more Indians and Asians playing in the NHL, at least of ethnic descent anyway. Growing up in Canada I knew quite a few Indians, Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants or children of immigrants playing puck. It won't be too long until there are some good enough to go pro.

7ft2 is an amazing height, but this seems like a publicity stunt.

Unfortunately, Satnam posted awful stats when he was playing at the IMG Academy and Indian International FIBA basketball team. Even college teams didn't want to bring him on board. He doesn't have NBA skills and was barely competitive at the high school level. He was drafted for the same reason that the Kings brought in Bhuller. It's a marketing stunt designed to sell jerseys in India.

When I watched his video, it was cringe worthy to see how slow he is. He does shoot well, true, but his shooting motion is screwy. Watching him shoot is like watching Tebow throw. He'll have to fix that motion and if, at 5 years at the IMG, he hasn't yet, I'm not sure if he'll do it in the future. Then there's the issue with his injuries, which have been very severe for the last few years. Thankfully, he's stayed healthy more recently, but I'd be worried. Especially given the tendency of men this larger to hurt themselves. I like his grip and his work ethic, but he's got to get faster.

The NBA is itching to the tap the Indian retail market with an Indian player, the way Yao Ming tapped the Chinese market for the NBA. The problem is that Ming was legitimately really good, probably on the level of MJ. He got the #1 draft pick. Satnam was a benchwarmer when he playing HS ball for IMG. So there's just no equivalency. Satnam might sell Mavs jerseys, but it's a marketing move.

In Satnam's case, he won't even be playing in the NBA yet. He'll be going to the D-League for 1-2 years and, if he improves, then he might play in the NBA. So it's not a done deal and it wouldn't surprise me if he stays in the D League for most of his career and occasionally plays just a few garbage minutes during a couple call-ups, which is what the Kings are doing with Bhullar. Cuban brought in Satnam to sell Mav's jerseys to the growing 1.2+ billion Indian market, not to improve the team.

A lot of people see him as a raw talent that can be developed. The problem is that he's been working with top trainers at IMG since 2010 and, even with all that, averaged 9 PPG at the HS level and was generally warming the bench. For him to ever compete in the NBA would take a miracle. At this point, he's 20 (official age is 19, but FIBA India admitted they fibbed to get him in the IMG back in 2010), so it'll be interesting to see how he developers in the D League.

These guys are nothing more than publicity stunts, even Cuban admitted it after he drafted the dude.
