As a general rule I couldn't see paying more than $120 tops for nice jeans. I think above that it just becomes label prestige and quality doesn't improve enough to justify a $250 pair over a $120 pair.
Last September I bought these jeans for about $110 at Macy's, the Evan-X slim cut by David Bitton in the same distressed indigo as this:

I absolute love them. They are my go to demin for every occasion. I've never liked a pair of jeans as much as I like these. Mine don't fit as tight as in the photo above, they are slim(Slim is the way to go these days), but they are definitely not skinny. I also bought the legs 2 inches longer than my actual inseam so I have the option of cuffing the bottom or if not just that extra crinkle(I like a bit of crinkling in the legs) in the legs which I like. The opening of the cuffs is just the right size. They never drag on the ground nor get jammed in the ankle of my shoe, they always fall just the way I want them over my shoes, be they sneakers or casual shoes. They are low waist and contour me perfectly and can be dressed up or down and go with anything. Just the right amount of distress, nice detail on the back pockets, yet not overly done. Overwrought and gaudy back pockets are often a deal breaker for me. I'm not a label whore so I like that there are no sort of flashy labels. The stitching is subtle too, high contrast stitching is another deal breaker for me. What I like best about all is that they are 1% elastane so they slightly stretch which makes them extremely comfortable no matter what movement or sitting position. Low-wait slim jeans often feel restrictive. I feel like if I got in a fight wearing jeans, I wouldn't be able to throw any high kicks unless the jeans are loose and baggy. But with the elastane, I never feel like I have any limited motion while wearing them. Funny thing is when I first tried them on and noticed the elasticity I didn't like it. I always associated "stretch jeans" with fat moms buying wranglers from Walmart. But after getting used to elastane I don't think I could live without it.
