will be in that area end of may
I was thinking Dusseldorf is better because it's more 2nd tier than koln, so probably cheaper and less "international".
any insight welcome, especially if there is a special event on the 30th of may, since I wont be working that day.

Book accommodation now. Duss can be reasonably priced but it has various conferences during the year and hotels are full and increase their rates by 8-10x. Cologne will be fully booked during these times too.
Duss also has one of the largest Japanese populations in Europe and the usual Turkish slums so it may not be much better than Cologne if you want to avoid an international environment.

thanks for the input
I wont use hotels but a famous site that lets you rent a room or a flat from locals
what about the nightlife, the cost of living, the level of talent? any difference between the 2 cities?

People renting rooms will also up their rates and be fully booked. I'm just emphasizing this because I got stranded there during a conference and had to pay $250/night for a dump without a bathroom near the train station.
I only spent a day in Koln so I can't really compare it to Duss.

The only thing I know about Cologne is that it has EU's largest brothel Pascha. So if you're only there for a day and can't pull, just visit that whorehouse.

Thank you man. But I don't do whores. No disrespect for those who do, and I might resort to that when I'm 50, bald, and fat, but I'm in it for the challenge. It's the possibility of failure that makes an approach interesting.

Koeln is constantly getting hyped to me. I haven't been, so I can neither confirm nor deny, but if I had to base if it off of how often it is recommended, then it is Koeln hands down.

Depends what you want , but I think you're better off with Cologne.
Yea yea , I know, everybody like me who's living in Cologne will say that it is better that D-Dorf, because both cities have a passionate rivalry since decades which is very well known throughout Germany.
But anyway, here's my point of view.
Cologne actually only doesn't have that much tourists (only on carnival) ...of whom even less do any sort of gaming or going out at night.
I never saw any brits, spaniard or whatever kind of those here when I went out, it's definetly not comparable with Berlin which is being swarmed to every corner with foreigners. Not the case at all here. So exotic factor is definetly with you.
It's also the much more laidback , open and vibrant city. But also double as big.
Much more clubs and choices to go out, loads of festivals and the kind.
Where as Düsseldorf is a city for the business men and rich people.
Not exactly cheaper. It may have less tourists, but it has the most millionaires in germany per capita, and you'll have whole streets filled with expensive stores you may only find in Moscow, HK or Tokyo. On the world wide living standards scale it pretty much always is within the top 10 on the side with Munich.
So if you want all that luxury and chic , Düsseldorf would be the choice.
Otherwise Cologne will do better.
On a side note, AFAIK there will be no special festival or anything like that in cologne on the 30th of this month which is a thursday. But clubs will definetly have open, not all, but enough.
Should've come at the last day of April because in the night of the 1st May is "Tag der Arbeit" which is a public holiday (Hitler introduced this btw lol), the clubs were literally packed with masses of girls are the ratios were unbelievable.
This is always the case here if there is a public holiday the next day, then the luck is on your side.

Dusseldorf is full of Russian chicks.I found it highly rewarding to the point I stopped visiting neighbouring slavic countries after the Dusseldorf experience.Nightlife in Dusseldorf sucks only the Russian girls make the difference.German girls in Nordrhein Westphalen are among the worst looking in Germany.
I have never been in Koln apart from the railway station but I got the sense of a more relaxed city compared to Frankfurt.

I can agree with the advice that Cologne should be better than Düsseldorf. Though I would add that there are some tourists but they usually are found in the Altstadt. For clubbing and proper nightgame you should head to the Ring or also the Südstadt and try to get some nearby accommodation for logistics.
