Having done biz meetings in Moscow with the under 30 nephews by blood and marriage of a true Oligarch that they work for and with and who interestingly helps them build their own onshore/offshore businesses I have some interesting thoughts to share.
The younger blood nephew was about 26 and was dating a 20 year old sophomore coed in one of the many Moscow Unis who's family actually lived in NYC on biz for a while and she spoke near flawless Northeast USA American English and was a little flirty firecracker and great interpreter - they asked me to to speak with her for a while at a luncheon so "she could practice her English". Of course I knew it was really for them to get her impression of me - was I a trustworthy cool guy or an arrogant ahole. Must of went well because she immediately started planning to connect me with her GFs at school!
They wanted to have me open a Moscow office in one of their uncles buildings and she wanted to introduce me to her college female friends - I truthfully said look I am flattered but I am way too old for your friends.
Without skipping a beat she said "It does not matter if you be beeelionaire!"
She knew we were working some serious deals and at 31.130 RUBs to the USD numbers multiply quickly.
Some observations imheo (Somewhat humble experienced opinion)
Be yourself and have a good back story - USA just signed PNTR and Russia now a full WTO member and there was only $8B USD in USA Russia trade last year in 2012 so only one way to go and that is up - way up.

So the potential in growth of trade with Russia and the USA is now enormous with most major USA Corporations wanting a piece of that $500B pie and you are learning Russian to investigate and capitalize on these trade possibilities.
This will immediately mark you as a serious biznyessman who is serious in investing in the future trade potential with Russia and you will stand out.
Bring a couple of USA standard business suits Charcoal Gray and Navy Blue conservative Pinstripe with proper White and or Light Blue Business shirts, Solid color blue red purple or gold silk power ties (No patterns or polyester blends silk only)and polished cap toe shoes (They remarked on mine) and attend a few consulate trade events (Not just USA but UK OZ EU Japan Korea etc consulates) and local trade shows and get Your Name US Trade Consultant or simply Import Export Consultant biz cards printed up and network - you will mark yourself as a serious man not just into notches and ironically you will be catnip to a feline as Russia is all about young people and young people are all about biznyess. Young Russians 20 to 40 filling up LinkedIn profiles rapidly. Get one (LI Profile) with you attending the Language school and networking for exim and services business opps. You may get hired there and never return.
Look like a Russian - Have a black leather coat and blue collared shirts black Russian fashionable (pointy) euro shoes black slacks and carry US Cigarettes even if you do not smoke - offer cigarettes as they all smoke like chimneys - get used to it. I choked on cigs all over Moscow - the servers all bring you a fresh tray by stacking the old not to spread ashes and leaving a new. When I finally smoked a cigar it put them at ease. When in Rome etc.
Whatever you do avoid the Rick Steves Eurpoe cheap traveller dockers and golf shirts look - they hate Dockers there - black slacks and black jeans work fine. Never make any comments comparing USA to Russia - they will be defensive and it will create and unchill vibe. Always compliment their choice of style even if it is over the top label conscious at times.
For karaoke night I wore a Blue collared suit shirt sans tie open with Black LEE Jeans a Black soft cashmere sport coat and and black slip-on shoes - if you can afford real Prada even one pair it is worth the investment Russians will notice your shoes! They thought it was a cool look (even the Jack Nicholson 2 piece Hollywood black suit open collar white or blue custom shirt look works as they all love Hollywood).
The idea is to be the cool Americanitz and not try to out-Russian them.
A London Fog Burberry style khaki overcoat will protect you clothes from road grime there and look appropriate for networking.
Turn a rotation of ladies twenty or fifty or so from 20 to 30 yrs old who "just want to practice their English" with you and do interesting things as your wing woman +1 (Biznyess networking, consulates, trade shows, tech shows, cultural events etc) and have a shot at becoming part of your exciting and interesting network. Know how to work a Samsung Android and iPhone cold - you are the American it is expected you will be a smart phone and tablet expert - be it.
Russian women are all entrepreneurial as hell but also want to be Moms so finding a real biznyess man they can support as a life partner has real appeal to them. Does not hurt that many of them are better educated, smarter and more entrepreneurial than Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Ellison combined.
Do not promise them the world and just let them see yours and the opportunities and ask their opinions as young Russians will automatically see opps you don't even realize exist.
Network for real and you will find that "Biznyess" game in Russia is a real aphrodisiac and irresistible to young ultra bright ultra feminine ultra sexy ultra eager to please young Russian ladies undergrads and grad students who will jump at the chance to be your city guide, terp, advisor, cook maid bed buddies fwbs to bounce ideas off of and help you any way they can. Russian women have a fine tuned intuition and will sort the shady slick types from the real biznyessmen interested in real exim or services opps in about one half of one nanosecond.
The ones who really like you will be more frugal with your money than you and negotiate out Bullshit (overpriced cabs food meals shopping events etc) automatically without you even noticing. Rules when taking a cab let her speak and never let them hear you say a word - as soon as a Moscow Metered cabbie heard my wing woman and I speak Amerikanski Angliski he tried to double the fare and she would not hear of it and she paid the meter and we walked away and we did not pay one extra Ruble - just saying. Get a rotation or young Russian wing women, be yourself, do not promise them anything but a chance to network in your world and practice Angliski with you. As for the rest let game and nature take their natural course and mix biznyess with inevitable pleasure.
I am honestly jealous of you because I know at only 40 no matter the City in Russia you are likely to come back with great business opportunities as they like to say in Russia "NO Contact NO Contracts" - they must size you up face to face and more importantly when you leave if you do not have a wife you can keep there and who waits for you when you travel to the USA on biznyess or is who is also willing and truly excited to be your wing women/wife/loyal life partner it will be because you have too many 8-9-10 choices and it is actually impossible to choose.
Whatever you do - do not drive in Russia - see dash cam YT videos - YOU WILL be scammed jammed or rammed and it will cost you.
Secret is if you are a man of action, sober and a good man Russian women expect to share with another Russian woman anyways.
As for looking your age or younger - be yourself - the Russians have an asian respect for wisdom - be wise and let a few grays show - it works - they love older Alpha men they think they might have a chance with for the long haul versus the local guys who will just bang bust and bounce them.
As for living arrangements I would be frugal and stay with a family as a Uni border with meals - most schools set this up as an option - and then use Airbnb for weekend crash (bang) pads - keeps costs low - good home cooking and folks to practice your Russian with and befriend and leaves you open to visit multiple cities with extra Airbnb budget. Plus does not let the locals get a bead on your routine and keeps you as the mystery man which never hurts. Off course never bring a bang back to the family where you sleep and eat it would be disrespectful. Always keep your inner sanctum sanctorum a sacrosanct secret until you decide to set up house keeping with one and she is cooking and cleaning and taking care of all of your needs and desires. That is what the weekend bang pads are for.
