So... I just got fired

So... I just got fired

Hi, I'm a student, and in my school, you get 3 months free from May to July, to do whatever the fuck you want. This year I decided to get a temp job, so a friend of mine contacted me with a lady, she has a somewhat succesful business, and accepted me to work with her.

I worked there for a month, for 8 hours a day, and for what would be 73 dollars a week.
While it wasn't a shitty job, it wasn't thrilling either, but it allowed me to buy a new guitar and some luxuries here and there, but I realized that I suddenly had no time to do anything, ANYTHING. Except on Saturday's afternoon and Sunday's when everything's closed. Plus, I don't really need the money, and Im not very ambitious about it, so I thought I was losing my last holidays before college in a job I didn't quite enjoy, getting money I don't really need right now.

So my attitude towards this declined considerably, to the point where I wanted to quit.
Yesterday, I had to fix an issue I had at school, but my employer didn't want me to go, as there was a bigger amount of work to do than normal, but as I had already decided I had to go, and had made other plans for after fixing that issue, I simply didn't go to work.

I had a great time, the girl I had plans with was nice and everything, but today, when I showed up at the workplace, my boss told me I was irresponsible, egoistical blablablala.
That didn't matter to me, I already had plans to quit anyway, but I felt bad for my coworkers, because they had to do all the work I didn't do, but what made me feel worst (not that bad, but it wasnt nice) was when I got home and told my mom, what happened, she was utterly mad at me, told me I was a fool, that many people would have loved to have the same job as me blablabla.
That raised the question in me: "Am I being a self-centered egoistical ungrateful dork? Or did I act as I wanted, in the interest of making better things that make me grow as a person?"

I just want to know what you think about what I did. I already have an opinion of my own, just want to know what you think.

Thanks in advance

If you wait long enough your the one who will get screwed......

You can work for a company for 20 years, If your boss retires and new one comes in, that 20 years means nothing to new one

Getting fired just gives you opportunities to find better jobs and finish school.

I just want to know what you think about what I did.

You acted irresponsibly.
You don't walk away from work.
You should have resigned or put in 2 weeks notice.

I never have a problem quitting a job I no longer like but there's two rules that have always served me well to the point that I never have had to worry about looking for work.

1. Never quit a job without having something else lined up.

2. (and this is the most important one) NEVER burn bridges. To this day I can go back and get a job at any place that I have ever worked because of this.

You can't even use this job as a reference anymore. Right now you are failing son.

Well this is not real world work, I was just going to be there for about two months more, so obviously I didn't take it very seriously. However, I understand that this shouldn't be done profesionally, about using this as a reference, that's probably a bad thing, but there will be other opportunities later.

While I'm not winning, I'm not exactly failing either.

By the way $73 ($1000 mexican pesos) for 8 hours a day, except Saturdays, for 5 hours

Your decision to go AWOL now reflects badly on your friend who recommended you in the first place.

If you never floated the idea of a temp job, you could have done what you wanted, enjoyed your vacation no problem. Because you committed to the job and then ditched it, it was a fail.

You blew it, and being mexican you should know to never burn bridges, Mexico is a word of mouth country, even more than the States.

Hopefully is a job not even related to what you want to do when you graduate or a small unknown office.

This is why I never assist folks I know in finding a job with whomever I'm working for.

This was the kind of job you give to a kid so he doesn't get bored, is it that much of a big deal? No

Don't beat yourself up over it too much. Not that big a deal. You could have handled it better, but I wouldn't give it too much though. Try to do better at your future jobs and chalk this up as a learning experience.

I manage a team of men at my work.

If a kid had to fix an important & urgent issue at school I would let him. If it was not urgent I would say to postpone it to when things at work were not so busy. I would certainly NOT allow someone to go AWOL just because he wanted to go on a date, which it sounds as if you did in addition to the school stuff.

Anyway, it sounds as if you are just a kid working a silly summer job for peanuts. Unless you have something lined up, and you didn't call your boss names, I would go back to your boss & talk a good game - apologize profusely for being irresponsible, admit you were wrong, say how much you're learning from her, blah blah blah - and she'll probably take you back.

Aureo, you fucked up bad and now you're rationalizing. You taught yourself a stupid lesson and it sets an awful precedent. It will come back and bite you in the ass down the road. Count on it.

NEVER do that again.

A year from now you'll wish you started today

Calm down. He blew off a $75 a week summer job, it isn't that big of a deal. Fucking up bad is knocking some stupid bitch up and having to deal with her ass for the next 18 years. This doesn't even come close to "fucking up bad". He doesn't even have to put it on his resume.

When I was a kid if I did that and my father found out her would have ripped my entire scalp off and grounded my car/motorcycle/bicycle. Then he would have dragged me into whatever factory he was working at that day to sweep floors for free starting at 6am until I found another job. This is exactly what would and did happen.

The world is a lot smaller than you think. You really can't go around screwing your employer, or employees if you own a company, and not expect it to bite you in the ass.

In many industries, EVERYONE in a mid size city pretty much knows everyone else in the same industry.

You are young, so it is easier for you to recover, but try to never do that again. I don't undertsand why you didn't just resign on good terms...

haha I was about to resign, in fact I already had thought what I was going to say, but I guess it was easier than I thought [Image: tongue.gif]
Thanks guys, I understood that if I don't want a job, I simply resign talking with my boss, don't walk away (is that beta?), but yeah, for the dudes that made a big deal of it, you need to calm down a little, being liked by others is not that important.

Those dudes aren't posting on a forum asking if they did something wrong.

I'd probably call in (in person) and apologise, say you were having personal problems and you realise the way you acted was completely inappropriate.

Bridge unburned.

It's not fucing up bad but believe me, 75$ a week in MX is pretty decent at 18yo

Burning bridges bring out the "do or die" mentality, so that's the only way to quit something...on your terms and with your selfish interest in mind...Sucking up to someone, whether for job or in school, may get you further than others, but you won't reach the true promised land, which is only achievable after you satisfied both your ideals and needs... So kudos for acting selfish in the professional world, because you know what mattered to you and you acted on them...

life is a waking dream.
