I think AC put it best. It's very rare for people to actually try really hard and really give it a good effort to be successful(wrt celebrity status) and famous, so they don't realise it's not all that possible in the first place. Thus, the myth that it is all about meritocracy and "lucky breaks". It's all about being initiated into the secret society/ies. If more people tried, they would realise the system doesn't work how we're told it works.
