Should You Tip Waitresses?

As an Aussie I have to say the service in the states is very fantastic. I didn't mind tipping to get looked after so well, everywhere I went.
It was depressing to get back to shit service outside the states.

The biggest difference between Tippers and #TeamNoTip is that Tipper's vehemently hate #TeamNoTip and will kick and scream and swear all #TeamNoTippers to hell and back and will even lose friendships over it, whereas #TeamNoTippers really don't care if someone tips or not (they just know they don't tip) and, most importantly, unlike Tippers who militantly judge a man's character by which team that person belongs to, #TeamNoTippers never judge a man's character by such a frivolous thing.

As a tipper, I agree with Monster. All non-tippers are going to hell.

I wish for simplicity's sake that tipping culture was replaced by restaurants just charging 20% more. With that said, this Heartiste post is so abjectly retarded it makes me feel dirty for liking some of his early stuff. It sounds like the inverse of something you'd chuckle at from some obscure radfem blog that even Jezebel readers don't take seriously. Imagine reading a feminist rant encouraging readers to stiff cab drivers because they're mostly male and thus the custom to tip them must be the Patriarchy transferring wealth from women to men. You'd laugh your dick off. That's how this Heartiste post comes off to any sane person.
RIP Heartiste, you had a good run when you were awakening men to the rosy delusions they'd been fed. But that dude needs to step away from the keyboard at this point.

None of this is true. The tippers are simply pointing out that the original article reads like an autistic interpretation of reality, and that if you actually explained to someone, in real-life, that you don't tip because of the reasoning that the author provided, not only would you accomplish nothing, but people would think that you're simply a butthurt, woman-hating, limp-dicked incel (and they'd be right).

Is it even the same guy? I heard several writers were contributing to it under the name, may not have been true though
Once it went from Roissy to this guy or group of guys, it really started to slip. I think in the beginning the writers try to make their content a bit closer to Roissy's but as time passed it has slowly devolved.

It's not frivolous at all. And this non-tippers don't care is bullshit. You know why Iknow someone has a personal policy about tipping? Because they told me about it!
I've never met one of these bad tippers with a personal policy about it that isnt a complete jackass in many other aspects of their lives.
Having a personal policy about tipping leads me to believe inly one thing about the person: His bullshit beliefs are all a big smokescreen to hide the fact that your no-pussy-getting ass is broke as fuck!

My parents taught me some very simple rules.
You always give a 10% tip if you are happy with the service.
If it was outstanding, you can give more.
If you were not happy, you don't have to give anything.
That's what everyone else was doing, and that's how all the people I gew up with are handling it as well.
So where did these 20% suddenly come from?
I've never heard about this before.

Just checking in from yesterday to see where the thread is going.
Haven't really thought about it till now.
Glad monster has been stewing over this and working out exactly how I think so that I won't have to bother.

There's a hashtag war about, of all things, tipping in restaurants? Is "professional shit-stirrer" a job now?

Usually we have a big race thread before the holidays.
Let's all give thanks we are taking a break this year by falling into the tipping/no tipping camps as a sign of racial solidarity for the holidays.
Kona. Please don't ruin it. That includes all references to Matt Forney.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

That was my fault. I can see that now.
There are plenty of people more than happy to give you cash in exchange for an hour with your EBT card, so that excuse doesn't work.

I usually make it a game... calc the meal and drink costs then add 15% and minus a dollar per waiter/waitress on mistakes or bad service... justify the tip you give.

For those on Team NoTip that say that owners should "pay their staff a living wage" instead of getting tips, you have an overly simplistic view that betrays your ignorance of the industry and/or the principles of general business ownership.
Especially in a high cost of living state like California, you're paying your servers the local or state minimum wage, whichever is higher. In CA this will soon be $15/hr in some cities. After rent, utilities, food cost (which constantly go up every year because vendors build in the same minimum wage increases), absurd workers comp bills, perennial "rush job" rates on maintenance, and 90 hour work weeks you have little enough left for yourself. For most mom&pop restaurants, there's very little wiggle room to allocate more of the net profit to servers just because #NoTip doesn't want to participate in a widely practiced cultural norm in the US.

Having said all this, I'd like to think that I'm not one of those dogmatic "always tip 20%" kind of people. I'll try to give service staff the benefit of the doubt, especially if the restaurant seems understaffed or they look obviously inexperienced. But if a server is outwardly rude, incompetent or very apathetic, I'll have a frank talk with the manager or owner about it. It's probably only happened a handful of times but I've never had clashes afterwards with servers wondering why I undertipped or stiffed them.
At that point, they know why: cuz they fucked up and didn't deserve a good tip. But going around not tipping because "you're subsidizing women" or because you don't feel like it is silly. You're snubbing an arguably important social compact that more or less states that if you dine at a sit-down establishment, you're supposed to leave a 15-20% gratuity for service staff. Can always order to-go or stick to quick service restaurants if you're that disinclined to tip.
