In the late 90s I was involved in the creation of a TV show. It wasn't a big hit, but I was pretty proud of it. I was particularly proud of a catchphrase I'd come up with for one of the villains in the show. People thought it was funny, and it actually sat on top of a TV tropes page for several years. (It's not there anymore, sadly. The show's mostly faded from people's memories.)

I thought about that show last week for the first time in years, after a buddy told me they might be doing a remake of it. Since damn near everything is on youtube these days, I went to google the clip with the catchphrase just for the hell of it.

Except... the catchphrase changed. It's not what I wrote. It's similar, but it's slightly different. (And not as good, if you ask me.)

I don't have the slightest idea how in the hell this is possible. There's no way in hell I'm remembering it wrong. Absolutely not. I was almost ridiculously proud of that phrase. I watched the scene it's in a million times with a big, dopey grin on my face. It's one thing if some random guy remembers "Luke, I am your father" the wrong way. It's quite another if Mark Hamill remembers it wrong.

Freaking weird.

Can you share anything about the TV show, to see if anyone here remembers the catchphrase as you wrote it or as the different one?

This deals with the Mandela effect and the theory of parallel universes based on the idea that large groups of people have similar alternative memories about past events. This has a possible nexus with quantum computing and particle accelerators like CERN.

I do not believe in the Mandela Effect.

People have always spelled things wrong, had faulty memories and quoted things the wrong way...especially famous lines or catchphrases.

The real problem is that with everything being digital nowadays it's too easy to change the evidence for anything easily. Pictures, movies, audio, whatever. Pretty soon technology will get to a stage where even video evidence will not be reliable anymore cause it will be so easy to fake.

Now, if you have things you personally owned for 20 years or more (like books or personal papers) and those contradict your memories repeatedly over and over again, then yeah maybe there's something to it.

But so far....seems like a psyop.

I've always been particular about recalling names, titles, lines and so on as accurately as possible, so when I see them get convoluted or mangled I just get aggravated, I don't imagine conspiracy theories.

There are things I'm 100% sure have changed.

I do understand people who didn't experience these changes, and say it's just bad memories.
I'd be one of them, if I didn't experience the Mandela effect personnaly.

No, I didn't see it incorrectly the first time, due to bad lighting.
I went to "Les Catacombes" in Paris when I was younger and looked extensively into the cranes.
They have changed and the eye socket bones are present today.


- The Monopoly man doesn't have a monocle anymore.

I often played Monopoly with my family, he had a monocle.
No, I'm not confused with the peanut man, I don't even know if this character exists in France.


- Pikachu's end tail was black, not yellow.

I watched the cartoon, when I was younger.
No, I'm not confused with his ears.


- Mona Lisa smirks now

I went to "Le Louvre" when I was a kid and didn't understand why people were interested in her smile.
Spent multiple minutes fixated on her non existent "smile", confused.
I clearly remember thinking she didn't smile at all, now her lips go up a little.


- Volkswagen logo now has a separation in the middle.

I saw this one around 7 years ago and thought : "oh they changed their logo, the old one was better".
Turns out they never added the separation, always has been this way.


Found many other details which changed for me.
I know for each and every example I give, someone will find a logical explanation.
I would be able to do the same, if tomorrow the sky was pink instead of blue, but it wouldn't change the fact it changed.

Volkswagen always had separation in logo. I know as it's probably the most popular and recognized car manufacturer in Balkans. Too many Golf II i III around since fall of Yugoslavia teach you that haha.

Anybody heard of Jaws love interest from James Bond Moonraker movie having braces mandela effect? There is famous scene where she smiles at Jaws and a lot of people wrongly think she has braces in that scene. I must admit I thought that too when I was a kid and watched it.

I think there is also a certain allure of a collective memory that was not well recorded as it then persists solely through oral tradition, which is the roots of myth and magic.

I think at some level we know these memories get warped over time, and we just have fun each time we retell the story and subconsciously inject some creative license along the way.

For instance, for Generation X, the Star Wars Holiday Special felt like a fever dream for the longest time because it was aired only once, and it was trippy and ridiculous, and never released on home video to this day. Unless you were a hardcore Star Wars fan and belonged to the fanclub and got a bootleg in the 80s you wouldn't know for sure if it ever even really happened. You believed it did because you have that isolated memory of watching it as it happened. A one off memory, with no ability to rewind and play it back, has enormous mystique surrounding it. It exists only in our tenuous neurons.

You can't have those experiences anymore because everything has now been fully documented and thrown on the internet as a global memory-bank.

Sometimes it's better for things to recede into urban myth and legend.






There is, of course, a whole host of Star Wars memories, because the first film had several different alternate cuts, different soundmixes, outtakes, things that were only in the comic-book or the collector's cards, han shoots first, Episode IV tag vs. no tag, etc.... That amorphous nature of the first film is what gives it so much added mystique. It simply does not exist as one canonical thing, which is both maddening and special at the same time.

The Ewoks Saturday Morning Cartoon Show was that for me; a weird, trippy memory from childhood, vaguely connected to these movies I'd seen on TV once, which were some sort of enticing adult genre of entertainment...

man, this thing took a few weeks of my life. when I first heard about it so many of the examples resonated with me, I spent so much time reading about it and rewatching stuff. I was going nuts. I settled for the logical explanation of faulty memory, but damn, it still gives me some chills and the gut feeling is that something is terribly wrong, even though rationally I know our memory is tricking us constantly and we can't rely on it (example: I know I broke up with some girl because she was a cunt, but I now mostly remember her being fun and decent).

the one that really gets to me, to this day, and every time I remember it fucks me up is the line from the witch in Snow White. 'mirror mirror on the wall' never existed. it's 'magic mirror on the wall'. lol, wut? no, no, no. when I first read this I thought: maybe it's the portuguese translation. so I went to check. and in Portuguese from Portugal, it's still mirror mirror. but why would they translate mirror mirror, instead of magic mirror? oh well. but it didn't sound right still, even with 'mirror, mirror'. then I remembered that in my childhood most Disney films, especially until the late nineties, were released here in Brazilian Portuguese. I went to listen to the PT vs BR version of, for example, the dwarf song and it sounded right in BR and totally wrong in PT (the closed vowels in the PT version sound way way off), because that's the version I watched when I was a kid. then I went to check the mirror scene, and in BR it says magic mirror, unlike the PT version. WTF. plus the whole mirror scene doesn't look right either. the flames in the mirror, to my mind, have always been green-ish/blue-ish. now they are just regular flames.

so to summarize: original version is 'magic mirror on the wall'. PT version is 'mirror mirror', BR version is 'magic mirror' (this is the one I watched as a kid), but in my head it's still 'mirror mirror'.

I decided to re-trace these steps again just now, and I'm freaked out again. Fuck.

Has anyone considered we have spilled over into a parallel universe in which the only thing that has changed is the Mandela Effect is real? Spooky.

Some of these are down to 3 things

1.Gullible people, People who believe everything they see without researching (for example one said judge judy never uses her gavel, The same day i watched judge judy and she did use her gavel.)

2. Our brains fabricate things. A friend of mines and I were enjoying some 25-year-old brandy. but we both swear the bottle said rum. Rhe whole previous week we ere drinking rum so I believe our brains fabricated the whole thing.

3. SIMPSONS!!!!!

now let me explain, watch most mandella effect videos. The Simpson are showcased very often within most of them. The Simpsons writers are humans and human make mistakes. With the Simpson being such a popular show whenever they get a quote wrong, Millions will believe that's the proper way to say the quote. This goes for alot of shows. I NEVER saw the original star wars (i know I'm missing out) So I heard the famous "luke I am your father" scene in other media.

Faulty or incomplete memory - even group memories are hardly reason to call in fucking time travelers.

That's insane. People will always remember things a bit differently - some names and sentences sound better when put later. So people will remember the better sounding way or one where the association comes faster.

But some people out there with perfect or near-perfect memory have never had this problem.

Oh - and companies do change logos, sometimes movies are altered - you can simply check out various corporate changes that were made over the decades.
