Good luck. $5k is definitely better than 2k.

3k is enough for a 2 month trip in SEA. That is 750 dollars per city, keep in mind that Stacks already has accommodation and airfare covered.
I just had a 2 week trip in Manila and spent a bit less than 500 USD (1600 USD if we include price for airfare and accommodation). I did not live cheaply either, I went to good restaurants(ate fast food like once, and never really ate at local stands which would have saved me even more money, did not buy groceries either), went on dates while buying drinks for myself, taxi'd everywhere, - I never thought about my budget at all. Toward the end I tried spending money because I had a bit left over.
I don't know about the cost of living in Malaysia - but for BKK, Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh I doubt he will be penny pinching.
With that being said, this is your first trip in 5 years, I wouldn't worry about budget, just enjoy yourself. Also, because you are going to 4 brand new cities, that means 4 times you're going to be a brand new tourist, so you will be prone to spending more money than someone who stayed there for a long time would regardless of your cheap life style.
I would go AirBnB 100% over hostels. Its nice having absolute privacy, and it's a big bonus bringing girls back to an apartment over a hotel. Seeing nice apartments on AirBnB is not a scam, there are good apartments for very affordable prices on that site.

Another tip for saving money - although the airbnb might seem already very cheap, you can oten get them even cheaper than the listed price. Maybe not for the famous apartment buildings but at nice, not well known ones nearby. Just have a try at messaging a bunch of hosts saying that you want to stay with them on your dates but your budget is only 55% of what they are asking for. See what they reply! They'll probably reply with something around 70%.

At this point I'm finding enough deals in areas I want to be that I am OK with just paying the full price, although I will try what you said.
My big concern right now is if the fact that I am creating an airbnb account right now and intending to use it within a month will preclude me from a lot of places since I guess the site works on reviews. Also, I have no idea how picking up and returning the key works.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the help so far. At this point I am HEAVILY leaning toward a 4 country/city trip in SEA beginning in June for 2 months. This will be my first trip outside the US since five years ago (excluding 2 days in Amsterdam this winter), and it will be my first time anywhere besides the US, parts of Western Europe, and Iran. I am very excited with the possibility, and let me just say ahead of my questions that after I make a definite decision in the next couple of days I will dedicate the next month to reading everything on the forum from beginning to end about the cities/countries I plan to visit. This might be a long post, but I'm definitely repping anyone else that helps me out and will be also looking to meet members in these cities if anyone is interested.
The cities I have decided on in the order in which I will fly to them (each one for exactly two weeks) will be:
1. Bangkok
2. Kuala Lumpur
3. Jakarta
4. Ho Chi Minh
I ruled out Singapore because I looked at the airbnb and the costs rivaled the West. I ruled out Manila, although not 100% sure, because I love Filipinas, but I already have the flag and know a lot about the culture. The other SEA countries I ruled out because of a lack of time and/or the relative difficulty of getting the flag. I intend to see all of the world I can, but I have to prioritize.
My goal is to visit the city, lift weights at a decent gym 4 days a week, eat one meal a day (I'm on a diet to lose weight and it has been working very well), AND MOST IMPORTANTLY game as much as I possibly can (day, night, and online).
My questions for you lads are:
1. Is two weeks long enough to give myself a strong chance to get each flag if I am gaming all day? Is two weeks too long for the purpose of getting a feel of the city and getting the flag, and should I do 8 cities for 1 week a piece instead?

Reviews are more necessary as a host, not a guest. You can even book some that have instant booking, there is a way to filter by these. The host will email you pickup instructions after booking and if not just ask. Typically there is a desk with your key in the lobby or they meet you there, just be sure to tell them your arrival time. On the rare occasion you will get the deadbeat airbnb landlord who leaves you stranded in the lobby for an hour but I've only had it happen twice out of 30 bookings or so.

Every host does it differently, they'll tell you how to get the key.
It's okay starting with a blank slate, hosts want money, most have the mind set of when their property is not being used they're losing money. I just booked my first AirBnB on my account and everything went fine, and a couple of host reached out further than they had too to accommodate me.

1: My advice would be to slightly change your schedule.
From 2 weeks in all 4 cities I would spend around 1 week in KL, and spend the extra week in Indonesia. You seem to prefer cities, so Yogyakarta comes to mind (major city with a big university and you can visit Borobudur and prambanan on a day trip). Surabaya if you want it to be non touristy and very few Westerners.
Also you might want to change the order in which you visit those destinations. HCMC to Jakarta is probably the least connected. By going to HCMC between Bangkok and KL you'd save money.

So before I answer your advice, let me say what my new plan had become as of last night before I saw your post.
Manila - 1 week
BKK- 2 weeks
Kuala Lumpur- 2 weeks
Jakarta- 2 weeks
HCMC- 2 weeks
The major reason I picked this order originally, although obviously with less information than you guys, was because:
-The first two are the easiest to game and get laid
-KL and Jak are heavily Muslim and I wanted to avoid Ramadan
-HCMC is I believe considered the hardest of the bunch to game
The specific reason is because I am a bit overweight right now. By the time I would presumably hit Manila I will have lost at least 20 lbs from where I'm at now, but it's the easiest to game in anyway so it wouldn't be nearly as much of a handicap.
Moving forward I will probably be losing 15-20 lbs a month, probably closer to 20. That means with the schedule I set up I will be in great shape by the time I hit HCMC, so I will have put my best foot forward with regards to SMV and game.
Not saying I'm opposed to your advice or that I won't look into it, just that that was my previous reasoning.

Good idea to avoid Ramadan.

Yes check in luggage is charged. The only large budget airline in the region that includes check in luggage is LionAir they are huge in Indonesia and they have thai lion air and Malindo Air (Malaysia).
Personally I wouldn't travel for 2 months carry on only, you won't be able to bring enough shampoo and other liquids.
Plus you need space for that notebook to write down observations on the differences between girls from thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam so you'll be able to post about that

Please use google for these little details man. This is not the Air Asia website and if there is non stop petty questions being asked then the thread turns into 300 pages of zero value. I understand you are a new traveller but do some research and find these small details yourself. By the way quit overthinking everything. You aren't traveling to rural Africa or back in time, You will find shampoo and everything else you need here. Stop making the tiny things so huge or you will be stressed out about nothing before you even leave for your trip.
Enjoy your travels.

Next time I'll check my main bag with clothes and less valuable items and keep everything else in a NICE carry on backpack.

The first trip is always the most stressful. Then once you land you realize all the worrying was for not. You can buy anything you'd possibly need for travels (except maybe condoms, ha!) pretty much anywhere in the world.
As a side note, a high quality backpack is a MUST if you start doing serious traveling. Don't skimp on it. Spend at least $50 and get one with cooling, pads, and a ton of space. It'll be a great investment.

Well yeah they have everything in Manila, but all known brands cost anywhere between 1.5 to 3 times more than what you may be used to, since they are imported, and are also considered 'luxury' (I'm talking about stuff like Gillette shaving cream or Nivea deo).
Same applies for mediocre clothing brands (H&M, Pull & Bear). The Phils have some local fashion shops as well, which are also overpriced (about $20 for a simple t-shirt with a cheap print on it). Won't even imagine by what factor true luxury brands are overpriced there.
Bottom line I suggest coming in with a full stack (shaving cream, deo, condoms, clothes etc), as long as your baggage doesn't go overweight. In other words do the opposite of 'packing light'.
If you do eventually have to buy stuff, it's almost always cheapest in Mercury Drug (even cheaper than the big supermarkets), and they have plenty of them around (just check google maps). For clothes try Uniqlo (it's a Japanese chain).

Agreed!
The only thing that's not available everywhere: morning after pill (plan B).
