Good luck. $5k is definitely better than 2k.

Remember to check the seasons to you don't come in the rain season.

3k is enough for a 2 month trip in SEA. That is 750 dollars per city, keep in mind that Stacks already has accommodation and airfare covered.

I just had a 2 week trip in Manila and spent a bit less than 500 USD (1600 USD if we include price for airfare and accommodation). I did not live cheaply either, I went to good restaurants(ate fast food like once, and never really ate at local stands which would have saved me even more money, did not buy groceries either), went on dates while buying drinks for myself, taxi'd everywhere, - I never thought about my budget at all. Toward the end I tried spending money because I had a bit left over.

I don't know about the cost of living in Malaysia - but for BKK, Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh I doubt he will be penny pinching.

With that being said, this is your first trip in 5 years, I wouldn't worry about budget, just enjoy yourself. Also, because you are going to 4 brand new cities, that means 4 times you're going to be a brand new tourist, so you will be prone to spending more money than someone who stayed there for a long time would regardless of your cheap life style.

I would go AirBnB 100% over hostels. Its nice having absolute privacy, and it's a big bonus bringing girls back to an apartment over a hotel. Seeing nice apartments on AirBnB is not a scam, there are good apartments for very affordable prices on that site.

+1 as well.

So I might redirect this question to the proper place (a Shanghai datasheet or thread), but I have been debating the idea of Shanghai vs Manila for a week in my head all day.

In Shanghai I would choose to stay at a hostel, and I can't guarantee that I'll be in the best part of the city. I would love to see China and get a feel for what it is all about, as well as get the flag. The problem I have is that I'd be in Shanghai during the first week of my trip and thus will be at my fattest. Combine that with what I believe which is that Chinese women must be harder to bed than SEA women, and you have a potentially tame week in a random big city surrounded by a bunch of backpackers in a dorm.

Are Chinese girls in Shanghai difficult to bed? Being decently out of shape and only having a week, is the flag going to be difficult?

One the other hand, for roughly the same price, maybe $50-100 difference, I could go to Makati Manila and potentially smash 2+ Filipinas a day. I've had Filipina girlfriends in the past and I've also set my tinder to Makati several times over the past year. I have never seen anything like tinder in Manila. It's like 80% of the girls match with me, and I can tell most of them the most sexual things I want via tinder and they like it.

The only reason I am not definitely going to Manila, which is something I may do for a period of a month or two or even relocate there, is because I already have the flag. Also I hear Manila is a bit of a shithole in general.

Another tip for saving money - although the airbnb might seem already very cheap, you can oten get them even cheaper than the listed price. Maybe not for the famous apartment buildings but at nice, not well known ones nearby. Just have a try at messaging a bunch of hosts saying that you want to stay with them on your dates but your budget is only 55% of what they are asking for. See what they reply! They'll probably reply with something around 70%.

At this point I'm finding enough deals in areas I want to be that I am OK with just paying the full price, although I will try what you said.

My big concern right now is if the fact that I am creating an airbnb account right now and intending to use it within a month will preclude me from a lot of places since I guess the site works on reviews. Also, I have no idea how picking up and returning the key works.

Reviews are more necessary as a host, not a guest. You can even book some that have instant booking, there is a way to filter by these. The host will email you pickup instructions after booking and if not just ask. Typically there is a desk with your key in the lobby or they meet you there, just be sure to tell them your arrival time. On the rare occasion you will get the deadbeat airbnb landlord who leaves you stranded in the lobby for an hour but I've only had it happen twice out of 30 bookings or so.

Every host does it differently, they'll tell you how to get the key.

It's okay starting with a blank slate, hosts want money, most have the mind set of when their property is not being used they're losing money. I just booked my first AirBnB on my account and everything went fine, and a couple of host reached out further than they had too to accommodate me.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the help so far. At this point I am HEAVILY leaning toward a 4 country/city trip in SEA beginning in June for 2 months. This will be my first trip outside the US since five years ago (excluding 2 days in Amsterdam this winter), and it will be my first time anywhere besides the US, parts of Western Europe, and Iran. I am very excited with the possibility, and let me just say ahead of my questions that after I make a definite decision in the next couple of days I will dedicate the next month to reading everything on the forum from beginning to end about the cities/countries I plan to visit. This might be a long post, but I'm definitely repping anyone else that helps me out and will be also looking to meet members in these cities if anyone is interested.

The cities I have decided on in the order in which I will fly to them (each one for exactly two weeks) will be:

1. Bangkok
2. Kuala Lumpur
3. Jakarta
4. Ho Chi Minh

I ruled out Singapore because I looked at the airbnb and the costs rivaled the West. I ruled out Manila, although not 100% sure, because I love Filipinas, but I already have the flag and know a lot about the culture. The other SEA countries I ruled out because of a lack of time and/or the relative difficulty of getting the flag. I intend to see all of the world I can, but I have to prioritize.

My goal is to visit the city, lift weights at a decent gym 4 days a week, eat one meal a day (I'm on a diet to lose weight and it has been working very well), AND MOST IMPORTANTLY game as much as I possibly can (day, night, and online).

My questions for you lads are:

1. Is two weeks long enough to give myself a strong chance to get each flag if I am gaming all day? Is two weeks too long for the purpose of getting a feel of the city and getting the flag, and should I do 8 cities for 1 week a piece instead?

1: My advice would be to slightly change your schedule.
From 2 weeks in all 4 cities I would spend around 1 week in KL, and spend the extra week in Indonesia. You seem to prefer cities, so Yogyakarta comes to mind (major city with a big university and you can visit Borobudur and prambanan on a day trip). Surabaya if you want it to be non touristy and very few Westerners.

Also you might want to change the order in which you visit those destinations. HCMC to Jakarta is probably the least connected. By going to HCMC between Bangkok and KL you'd save money.

With this advice, and the advice below, I think I am actually going to give it a go to haggle with the owners. Hell, if it is possible to get 30% off at each place then I'll end up saving like $400+.

So before I answer your advice, let me say what my new plan had become as of last night before I saw your post.

Manila - 1 week
BKK- 2 weeks
Kuala Lumpur- 2 weeks
Jakarta- 2 weeks
HCMC- 2 weeks

The major reason I picked this order originally, although obviously with less information than you guys, was because:

-The first two are the easiest to game and get laid
-KL and Jak are heavily Muslim and I wanted to avoid Ramadan
-HCMC is I believe considered the hardest of the bunch to game

The specific reason is because I am a bit overweight right now. By the time I would presumably hit Manila I will have lost at least 20 lbs from where I'm at now, but it's the easiest to game in anyway so it wouldn't be nearly as much of a handicap.

Moving forward I will probably be losing 15-20 lbs a month, probably closer to 20. That means with the schedule I set up I will be in great shape by the time I hit HCMC, so I will have put my best foot forward with regards to SMV and game.

Not saying I'm opposed to your advice or that I won't look into it, just that that was my previous reasoning.

Oh just noticed I forgot to mention my most important reasons for 2 weeks in KL and Jak.

About Ramadan, I was in Iran 5 years ago for Ramadan. Keep in mind that Iran is very severe when it comes to Islamic law compared to most countries (possibly excluding Saudi and a few other places). I highly doubt anywhere in SEA is as strict about anything during Ramadan. That being said, in Iran I had trouble even buying a bottle of water during the day time. Every date I tried to go on during the day was entirely ruined because everything social was closed. Even hookahs, which are probably the only thing Iranians can legally do for fun, weren't available until sundown. I couldn't even get a chicken and rice meal after I went to the gym unless I went late night.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. The main reason I want to stay in KL and Jak for two weeks is the following. In my entire life in the US I have never met anyone that I know of from Malaysia and I'm nearly 29. I've only known one Indonesian guy and went to an Indonesian consulate once and that is simply because it is close to where I grew up and I was invited. I REALLY want flags from all the countries I'm visiting, but particularly from Malaysia and Indonesia because I am worried I'll never get them unless I'm forced to fly back. With Phils and BKK I would guess that it is so easy to get the flag that I'm not worried (I already have Phils flag many times over). Also although Vietnam might be the hardest of the bunch, I live in a city with a huge Viet population and will be moving to another city with an even bigger Viet population, so if for whatever reason I don't get the flag it can still be done.

Is anyone here an expert on airasia? It looks like I will fly between my SEA destinations all with airasia, but I have some questions.

Is regular luggage charged (1 suitcase), and what is the likelihood that they will lose my case during the 4-5 flights I take?

Also a general question, would it be smarter or OK to just take a carry on during my trip for two months and one week? If so all I would bring is 5 workout shirts, 1 workout pants, 3 shirts for dating/going out, 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of workout shoes, and 1 pair of shoes to go out in (I won't put this in the bag, just wear it on the flight). Also underwear and socks. If possible I want to bring my own shampoo and bars of soap.

Yes check in luggage is charged. The only large budget airline in the region that includes check in luggage is LionAir they are huge in Indonesia and they have thai lion air and Malindo Air (Malaysia).

Personally I wouldn't travel for 2 months carry on only, you won't be able to bring enough shampoo and other liquids.
Plus you need space for that notebook to write down observations on the differences between girls from thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam so you'll be able to post about that [Image: biggrin.gif]

My main issue with carry on, aside from the lack of space to bring things, is that US airports won't let me bring shampoo with me. This isn't the end of the world, but I hate using shit shampoo and I don't know what I'll find once I arrive in Manila. The thing about this trip is that I don't want to go full on backpacker, but all I want to bring is a phone and enough clothes to workout, date, and party.

I'm going to test out the space in my carry on and see if it'll work for me.

Does anyone know the size of a carry on that is the limit on airasia? I'd really hate to make it to SEA without a larger suitcase only to find my carry on will have to be checked in.

Oh and about the last part of your comment, I stopped smoking weed a while back so my memory is getting better. I'm going to take lots of pictures and try to remember every detail of what happens. Needless to say an epic trip report will be forthcoming!

Please use google for these little details man. This is not the Air Asia website and if there is non stop petty questions being asked then the thread turns into 300 pages of zero value. I understand you are a new traveller but do some research and find these small details yourself. By the way quit overthinking everything. You aren't traveling to rural Africa or back in time, You will find shampoo and everything else you need here. Stop making the tiny things so huge or you will be stressed out about nothing before you even leave for your trip.
Enjoy your travels.

Fair enough. As of this moment I have the money in my account that I need and have done enough research so that I think I will purchase everything tomorrow or the day after. After that I'll mainly be just reading the relevant threads.

I'll stop posting about every thing that comes to mind though. To be honest I am not stressed in the least. In fact I am the most excited I've probably been about anything in years, so the over-posting is a consequence of that.

Anyways, SEA here I come.

Manila will have every thing you need for much cheaper. Their super markets and pharmacys are no different than anywhere elses. I bought shampoo the day I landed.

I did the same thing bringing too much stuff like soap and whatnot, once I landed I realized it was pointless, you can find ANYTHING you need in the malls and grocery stores, I honestly found the selection and quality of goods in terms of personal care better then what you can find in American stores.

I did a carry on only for one month and it was a pain in the ass, not because it didn't fit enough stuff but because I had everything in one bag (and a really small daypack which didn't comfortably hold much).

Next time I'll check my main bag with clothes and less valuable items and keep everything else in a NICE carry on backpack.

That's what I do also. Clothes or anything that can burn for all I care go into my checked luggage, and my laptop plus other valuables go into my backpack.

And yes, StackGsMan, you can find a decent shampoo in a third world country.

This, times 100.

The first trip is always the most stressful. Then once you land you realize all the worrying was for not. You can buy anything you'd possibly need for travels (except maybe condoms, ha!) pretty much anywhere in the world.

As a side note, a high quality backpack is a MUST if you start doing serious traveling. Don't skimp on it. Spend at least $50 and get one with cooling, pads, and a ton of space. It'll be a great investment.

Why has there been an exodus of expats in Singapore? Are they forced to leave or left voluntarily.

Well yeah they have everything in Manila, but all known brands cost anywhere between 1.5 to 3 times more than what you may be used to, since they are imported, and are also considered 'luxury' (I'm talking about stuff like Gillette shaving cream or Nivea deo).

Same applies for mediocre clothing brands (H&M, Pull & Bear). The Phils have some local fashion shops as well, which are also overpriced (about $20 for a simple t-shirt with a cheap print on it). Won't even imagine by what factor true luxury brands are overpriced there.

Bottom line I suggest coming in with a full stack (shaving cream, deo, condoms, clothes etc), as long as your baggage doesn't go overweight. In other words do the opposite of 'packing light'.

If you do eventually have to buy stuff, it's almost always cheapest in Mercury Drug (even cheaper than the big supermarkets), and they have plenty of them around (just check google maps). For clothes try Uniqlo (it's a Japanese chain).

Not sure about shaving cream since I brought my own, but heads & shoulders shampoo wasn't expensive from what I remember.

I do agree that clothing there from budget brands is quite expensive. Zara, H&M etc are not good deals in the PH.

Agreed!
The only thing that's not available everywhere: morning after pill (plan B).
