Croatia set to join European Union

Wouldn't want to spend more than 3 months in Croatia anyway, outside of high season it's a pretty dull place.
Serbia, despite not being EU, also has the 3months out of 6 rule but nobody enforces it, I was living in Serbia for 3 years, and just did border runs every 3 months, sometimes I even overstayed my Visa and they didn't give a damn.
I even went to the Serbian embassy in Budapest and they told me just to ignore the rules.

I think getting a residency visa will be easier than a passport. They have self-employment visas for many EU countries but you generally have to making quite a bit (over $100,000/year). Someone in Estonia said it's "only" around $40k. One day I will walk into the Polish embassy and see what options I have.

A resounding Yes vote by Croatian voters to European Union membership in a referendum on Sunday puts the Balkan country on track to become the bloc’s 28th member in July 2013.
The outcome reassured officials in Brussels who may have been unsure about exactly how appealing membership of the troubled EU might be in the midst of a turbulent debt crisis. It signalled “a clear indicator of the continuing attractiveness of the EU”, said Martin Schulz, elected last week as president of the European parliament.

It looks like this will be the last country admitted for a while. I believe Romania and Bulgaria is set to enter this year.
The big downside of this is that for most of the European continent we can only stay for 3 months at a time. Can you imagine if South America did the same and we could only stay in the continent for 3 months in and 3 months out? This blows.
Looks like a strong case to get an EU passport as a 2nd.
Will be getting my second passport soon

Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007.
Caused a bit of trouble with the neighbours since it led to tougher visa rules for nearby non-EU countries. Not to mention the ever-present corruption cases that undermined many older EU members' faith in the organisation.
Croatia shouldn't cause much trouble compared with those two.
Edit - you're right about Bulgaria and Romania regarding joining Schengen in 2012 - which is what matters for visa purposes.

The 3 month rule isn't about the EU but rather depending on if the country is part of the Schengen agreement. That's why Switzerland, even though not part of the EU, doesn't require any visas additional visa either. Croatia was planning to join Schengen by 2015 anyway, this will only speed up the process.
I'm not happy about this move either but rather because the EU is generally flawed. As an European citizen I am ashamed about the whole bunch of bureaucrats that reign in Brussels without even having being democratically voted into their positions.

Thats what I did , I was able to get a Portuguese Passport (My grandma is portuguese)
But I heard that its hard for Americans to get a 2nd citizenship(regardless of the country), due to some limitations in the US law. Is it true?

None of those countries are ready to join the EU.
Allowing countries where the average wage is 200-400 Euros a month into the EU has just created an avalanche of people heading West with all it''s problems.
Even if a few of those are Great looking girls...I'd rather have them in isolation out of the EU morass and visit myself.
We're having enough trouble with Romania as it is.

Romania is way more problematic than Croatia will be. For one, the per capita GDP of Croatia is double that of Romania. Croatia's population is less than a quarter of that of Romania.

Bulgaria's entry into the EU was premature and a farce. At the time croatia and even serbia were less corrupt than them.
Bulgaria and Romania were set to join the schengen region in mid 2011, but thats been blocked due to political reasons. "In principle, we meet all the technical requirements to join the schegen pact, but in practice we are getting fucked by brussels" is what the bulgarian PM would say. I havent followed the latest news, but wouldnt be surprised if it doesnt even happen in 2012.

If you have the paper, Ireland's is by far the fastest Euro passport to get if you lack other options (e.g. hereditary.) It can be done in 2 months, but will cost you > $1.5M. Some details here:

Exactly. I am not sure why any country would want to be controlled by unelected socialist technocrats based in Brussels. I think that many EU citizens will come to regret that choice in the future.

Its not the choice of the people themselves, in Holland 67% of the population voted NO against Europe in a referendum but the politicians went ahead with it anyway.

The scary part is that the EU is now installing its own people in European governments (e.g., Italy). What is one of the first steps taken in Italy? Banning all cash transactions over 1000 Euros. I kid you not. Moreover, the former EU bureaucrat did it as an emergency decree, rather than going though Parliament.

That's why I can't dig parlamentarism.
In Presidentialist countries such as Brazil and the United States, despite the fact that major parties are "controlled" by the economic elite, you still have the guarantee that you can choose the guy to run the house for the next 4 years , what prevents distortions like this in Italy and Russia , for example.
