So, I know that its been said that Japanese girls start liking you less once you learn more Japanese language, but what about girls from other countries?

A suggestion would be that since girls have small attention spans, they are briefly amused that you are something different from what you're use to, and thus they become more interested in you because you'd be different from the average local guys that she would be use to seeing. One becomes something of a novelty bang for them.

The foreigner groupies are easiest thing here. Even if you speak Japanese, it's not like you are required to let them know. Everyone opens in English anyway.

Thai girls often say they like it better when guys can't speak Thai because they know he hasn't been there long enough to have smashed his way through her social circle yet. Or that's the conclusion I've come to at least. But in reality they don't like you any more or any less either way. When I flirt with them in Thai they eat it up and tell me how great my Thai is (it isn't) and how handsome I am (I am). I think speaking a bit of Thai probably helps, even if girls say they don't prefer it (don't listen to what they say).

Bottom line is I wouldn't even worry about it either way. If you can speak, great. If you can't, no problems. The girl is going to like you, or not like you, for you, not because you can speak 10 sentences of her language. That's how it is in Thailand anyways where many girls can speak English.

When I'm picking up the girls with 0 English I get hit with this question from time to time "Your Japanese is good, you're a bad guy right?" This is because they assume that I've been smashing my way through the cities female population.

Regardless, the girls wouldn't be talking to you if they didn't have some interest. All you need to do is make sure you know how to capitalize on that.

Make sure you are imitating the right people. Most foreign guys speak like Japanese girls because that is their only significant input. "Sugoi ne!!!" Once it's established you're not gay it's pretty obvious how you came to speak that way.

Hang out with Japanese guys more often and this problem goes away. Speak with the flat, almost monosyllabic tone that J-guys have. It's just a matter of imitation.

For the record, foreigner groupies hate you learning their national language because it vastly increases your dating options.

They realize that once you speak the lingo you will be exposed to much better girls than them.

As usual, it's all about options. Don't fall for their BS.

Thanks man, I learned this lesson the hard way about two years ago. What Japanese I do speak is the masculine style, with plenty of 大阪弁. The style here is a little less monosyllabic I reckon, but the guy friends I have made always make sure to rag on me for any mistakes I make when speaking to them.

If you speak the language do you open with it or start in English and switch later? I've had mixed results starting in English vs local language, anyone have suggestions on how to figure out which one to start with? I'm in China.

I almost always open in English. Better the girl is in the weak position at the beginning, then you can switch over when she struggles. But that's just me.

I've been to Japan 3 times and speak zero Japanese. I'd rather be less popular but able to converse fluently. Besides, I think popularity would only increase in step with local language skills.

I used to hear this myth a lot with regards to Thailand. Everyone would say: don't learn Thai, the women will hate it.

This simply isn't true. Once I gained fluency I got more women than ever both sluts and good girls alike. I'd also have far more women fall in love with me and try to pin me down for long term.

I conjecture that the women who don't like you if you speak the local lingo are the ones you want precious little to do with anyway. If they hate that you understand their language it's likely because they worry they can't scam and lie to your face as they'd planned.

This rule can be applied to whatever country you may find yourself in.

In China, women love laowai that try to speak Mandarin. They smile big or giggle at you. Even if they go "Huh?" or "Shenme?!", they like that you are still trying. Only the ones with strong English, will ask that you just speak in English. I usually reply back in English or Chinese that they are haters because my Chinese is better than theirs, just to tease them and make them relax. They will call you silly, but they will get moist. Always open in Mandarin. Switch from "Ni hao, to "Hao a". Use Zaoshang hao (good morning) before 12. Use Wanshang hao in the evening. Ni hao is just too corny with younger girls these days and comes off awkward. If you know how to pronounce it correctly, use Zao An or Wan An instead of zaoshang and wanshang.

After you do the greeting, let them know you do not speak alot of Chinese but you are studying. Wo yi dian shuo zhongyin or something like that. Suits correct my grammar, it's early here. Then say something like wo xue xi zhongyin (I am studying Chinese), then continue after that in Chinese or English.

What this shows them is that you are eager to learn their culture and language. Chinese people as a whole like that alot. Sometimes, and I mean sometimes, certain girls that think lowly of their ownselves will slot you as very high quality and we not want to talk with you (they are embarrassed), if you can speak more than ni hao. You would have to know how to talk very fast in Chinese to prevent them from escaping, and use slang. Often times these are very poor girls. Don't worry about that though. Just make sure you take note and approach prettier ones that look more put together. Those are the ones that can be intrigued by foreigners and patient enough to hear you out.

Lastly, never be afraid to repeat yourself or ashamed. Even if it feels like they are annoyed. Lots of guys hate that, but keep saying it (with a big smile) until they get it. They might try to correct your Mandarin. In their own localism even, which is not standard Mandarin!! Just say hao hao (Okay okay) then try repeating it the way they like. They do not realize it yet, but they are getting reeled in like a fish.
