Ello: Ad-Free Social Network like Facebook

Have you all been following the new social network Ello, which is intended to be an ad-free rival of Facebook?

Here is the site:
https://ello.co/

It is currently invite only. There have been a lot of articles on it.

The site launched on the heels of Facebook banning people who aren't using their real names. Trannies and others complained, and Ello said "we don't require real names." The site seems like a hybrid of facebook, twitter, and old school live journal.

On the one hand, I'm all for competitions for Facebook. I know a lot of people who would love to kill their facebook, but don't because that is where the people are. Facebook has numerous design problems that go beyond their data collection policies. The idea of a social network free from advertising and data collection is very appealing, and the idea of getting in EARLY on a new social network is also a major opportunity.

On the other hand, Ello seems like it is creating very strong "abuse" and "harassment" policies that could lead to censoring and bans for those that express unpopular opinions. Their initial audience was the worst of the SJW crowd, and I suspect they will cater to that audience at the expense of dissenting voices.

I would love it if an RVFer was to make a Facebook that doesn't suck. Even if someone was just to launch the old 2008 FB interface again, before privacy controls were moot and the newsfeed actually included everything your friends did. Either way, I'll be keeping an eye on Ello.

I've been using my best-known pseudonym on facebook since I first signed up. It's an unlikely name, but most of my real-world friends call me by it, and those people make up the majority of my fb friends.

Facebook already deleted my account once for this. I just created another one with a different email address. I won't be surprised, though, if some tranny or other deviant sues for discrimination at some point. Legally speaking, one's "real name" is pretty much whatever one wants it to be, as long there is no intent to commit fraud.

I have been tossing an idea like this around in my head for a while. The network would make a commitment to no censorship, no ads, and no abuse of privacy or personal data.

Imagine a Crowdsurfing style community back when they were a non profit. I really don't believe there's any reason a service like Facebook should be a for profit, or at the very least not this big ass mega corp. I just want a place to connect with friends online without all the bullshit.

I see Ello will still collect 'anonymous' visitor data unless you actively opt out.

Though they plan to also make income by selling features.

It's impossible for a social network to succeed financially and not suck at the same time. Women are driving social media, not men, so these companies have to cater to their whims. If they don't, the majority of their eyeballs jump to the ones that do. And then, they can't sell as many ads.

There are male-friendly spaces online, but they don't make a profit. Maybe that's where this one's going if it's ad free.

Yeah, that's my question.
If they're not running ads, who is paying for the servers?

I was thinking about making an RVF social network app that would let you find other RVF members in your city for meet ups/wingman opportunities. It would only really be useful for the users who frequently travel. If you're in Bangkok for 5 days and don't have much time to plan, the app could set you up with another RVFer instantly.

Though if I were to spend all the effort coding it Apple may simply deny the app for being "misogynist" or some shit, so probably not worth the effort.

You'd also have to worry about that app giving the wrong people a convenient list of RVF-ers to harass or assault.

I would never join an RVF social network app, purely because I enjoy because anon. Even if some of you have met me, whose to say someone else may destroy that privilege?

There has been a couple attempts to replace facebook and I don't even remember their names. Let's face it, it is impossible to replace fb simply because it's too late. It's got over 2 billion members, nothing is gonna shift everybody to another social networking site after this point, and it is only if the majority of the users close their account and switch to another social networking site that you can successfully 'replace' facebook. Personally I hate fb and what it stands for and its design and policies, but I use it because it's basically a phonebook that includes everybody. You can contact anyone you want without trouble. That idea turned out to be worth 12 figures. To replace fb someone needs to come up with a better idea, not a better-wrapped version of the same idea.

I don't see this going anywhere, people are stuck on FB.

But it would be interesting to see what the next best thing will be.

The app would still have relative anonymity as per this forum, not requiring profile pictures or real names (you have to log in with an existing RVF account, and rep points would be listed for the suspicious). The only difference is this forum lists each users country, and for the app to be useful it would have to list your city. But I don't think that's detailed enough to compromise anonymity.

The problem with being the "anti-" anything, is that you are dependent on someone else being hated in order for yourself to be successful.

On a personal level, I see such people as leechers, and leechers aren't worth my time nor respect.

Ello is just the startup of the week because of good PR. The press knows an article titled "The Anti-Facebook" makes a great headline that drives a ton of clicks.

Fuck that.

What's the point of complaining about ads on FB? Are you willing to open your wallet and cough up a monthly subscription fee to play their overhead? Like we do with Spotify to bypass ads? If not, then there's no point in complaining. I'd also be willing to consider paying a few bucks a month to not have to sit through youtube ads.

And Facebook will just buy it.

Ello can't sit around and not make money. It already has been leaked they have a sizable VC fund that put enabled them to up and run, eventually you will have to make money or fool people into thinking you can make money (Twitter) so your enablers can get a return. If they won't shill for Ads, they will data mine, because no social network has been able to survive unless doing one of the two (or both) and this one won't be any different. They all say the say BS at the start. Soundcloud was benevolent with music from the start and now is in the pockets of every Major Label and data mines like no other while successful channeling the majority of music traffic towards their site.

Tell me your benevolence Ello when Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Google, offers you a hundred million dollars and stock options. If they were serious about keeping it clean they would charge a small yearly fee of 5$ and make it payable in bitcoin or something along those lines to hammer in their "Anti-Establishment" ethos and the reality that they have bills and server fees to pay to maintain service. Its all a sham though. In comparison, Thom Yorke just dropped a new album which you can only buy with bitcoins, he doesn't give a fuck what the end result of the project is but he did his own way 100% outside traditional avenues. That's keeping it real.

The sites that kept it real aren't around anymore, or were subject to hostile take overs or shutdown.

The Internet is become a big joke. Nothing is authentic on it anymore, people are lapping up this Ellio thing when it was disappoint them like FB and all the rest in due time because that's just how the game works with these things.

As Kevin O'Leary would say:

I wouldn't complain about fb or youtube adds, if they weren't so greedy. For instance, a relatively small percentage of fb's revenue comes from the credit card purchases of its users. If you have a facebook page for commercial uses, you can ''boost'' your posts and your fan count by making small payments. A lot of companies paid Facebook in the past years and in exchange fb allowed them to get their posts and pages seen by people who hadn't liked those pages. But fb being fb, last year it changed its algorithms that control which users see which posts of the pages they liked. In result, the posts that the pages shared ended up reaching to only 25% of the audience it reached before. The reason was that, under the disguise of being ''user-friendly'', facebook decided to filter out the posts of commercial facebook pages in newsfeed and instead fill the newsfeed with other advertisement from outside of facebook. In short, if you liked a facebook page, whether commercial or not commercial, you started seeing only 25% of its posts, and the remaining 75% gap was filled with advertisements of other websites. There was a lot of criticism from page owners and fb in response dropped this : ''If you want to reach more people, you should pay extra'' (not official announcement, but the explanations from the help center staff). So after the page owners paid facebook and purchased a certain amount of fans, facebook cut out each page's reach to those fans. It's like buying something from a store and the store owner coming to your house in the middle of the night to take back 75% of the item without any notice or consent. Facebook has successfully fooled and pissed off a lot of page owners along with the companies that managed those pages and given them the middle finger when they criticized the new algorithm. I'm disappointed that no one filed a grand fraud law-suit against fb, or at least not that I know of. Now they must have changed something back because now the page reach percentage seems to be higher, but I doubt its authenticitiy now as I doubt anything Facebook has to offer. It's just a number in my page and there is no way to confirm it.

As for Youtube, it has its known fraudulent ways to get you to click on their ads. For example when you make a search, the ads take a few seconds to load on your page. So when you quickly click on the first video, it instantly loads an ad a few miliseconds before you click and you unintentionally click on an ad. This is just low.

These companies have the right to make revenue from ads for giving you a free service, but they resort to such scams and you get more than what you bargained for.

I really hate facebook. I think I have logged on about once or twice a year for the past five years or so. That has usually been while drunk on by myself on Christmas break or something just to see where other people are in their lives.

One of the worst things about facebook is how it is becoming a very public version of a family photo album. This is where it started going down hill. I was in college when it first came out and was open only for college students. It was cool then. It made it so much easier to hook up or meet people or simply find what parties were going on that weekend that you hadn't heard about.

Now, it is nothing but my mom and aunt putting up photos of me from a child or 8 Christmases back with jailbait and single mothers sending me messages inbetween the spam from some asshole in Kenya who just inherited a million dollars.

I am actually surprised people use it anymore. I am convinced that a huge chunk of the 2 billion users are ghost accounts or spam accounts. How many people have a facebook that they log into a few times of year like me? I would guess a lot. If I look through my friends it is either dead accounts, some spam accounts, or a small group of people that want every moment of their life recorded on their wall. What we need is a facebook rival that doesn't allow jailbait or single mothers or parents...that I would use.

Women these days think they can shop for a man like they shop for a purse or a pair of shoes. Sorry ladies. It doesn't work that way.

Women are like sandwiches. All men love sandwiches. That's a given. But sandwiches are only good when they're fresh. Nobody wants a day old sandwich. The bread is all soggy and the meat is spoiled.
