Currently in Santo Domingo. I haven't been here very long. I will say this as of now though: I don't feel comfortable here.
I am pretty sure I got into a fake cab from the bus.
I should have never got into it in the first place. He didn't have a radio. He had not teeth. his spanish was horrbible. He looked shady as hell.
I made a fake phone call and told my make believe friend i'm on the way to the hotel i told him to take me too.
I told him exactly where we were at and I took the guys taxi i.d. and gave it to him. Basically i took all the cabs info and pretended to gave it to a friend in case something happened.
I thought i was definitely going to get robbed.
Luckily, nothing happened.
Then I went to Calle Venezuela around 9. They pat you down to go into the bars there. What is this?
Additionally, I was pretty much the only non-dark complected one there.
I felt way out of place.
I made one approach at McDonalds but got cockblocked by her manager.
Other then that, nothing.
THe girls in Santiago are way hotter right now as of now.
I'm going back out.
Maybe I went out to early.

Also the accent here is different then in Santiago. I might go back to Santiago if things don't turn around.

Be careful with the taxis around calle venezuela, many shady drivers out there, so when you decide to take a taxi there, speak to one of the bouncers and he will point out a safe taxi for you.

Give it more few days, i think santo domingo is the shit, unless you are not into mullatas or dark skin chicks.

i still haven't made it to zona colonial. I didn't do any research before heading out last night.
I went out way too early to begin with.
I ended up going to the lounge on top of my hotel called Bianco. I was staying at the Hotel BQ last night.
I got a huge room with 2 queen sized bed, 2 couches, and nice lazy chairs also. It was more like a suite.
They gave it to me cause when I arrived, they showed me the room and I didn't like it. I told them I am going to find another hotel. Then they showed me another room and I said I didn't like it again. It had a wierd smell to it.
Finally, the manager tells me okay, let me show you this last room and if you don't like it, just go to another hotel.
I was being picky cause it was $90 for a night!
So he shows me the last room and I couldn't pass it up.
This is what motivated me to go HAM last night.
So at Bianco, most people were old. However, I did make friends with the DJ who told me I have to go to GOLD. He said he had to spin until 3 in the morning but he was going to go there after his set.
SO I went to GOLD. It is located in the Princessa Casino/hotel.
This is a good club. After a few minutes in there these 2 girls and a guy come up to me and start dancing with me. One of the girls was my height (about 6 feet). I was one of the tallest guys in there.
So the shorter girl comes up to me and starts yelling in my ear (we are in a nightclub).
We small talk for 30 seconds then she says, "so, go dance with my friend".
I turn around and start dancing with her friend and the other friend starts making out with the guy.
Pretty obvious they are out trying to find a guy for the girl.
I personally don't like tall girls so i didn't want to put too much work in. After a few minutes of dancing, i ask her to come outside with me. She didn't want to go outside. I think she had just gotten there. So I said, nice meeting you and went to the other side of the club.
I went out to the casino and started hitting on one of the girls working there. I kept seeing more hot girls pour into the club so I got over her.
I was super fucked up at this point. I contain myself well when i'm wasted so you will never know. But, I knew i was fucked up and it was going to be one of those nights where I just attack and attack.

So I went out to the parking lot.

So I got them back to my hotel.
I had some rum and coke waiting and served it to them.
Remember, i said i was super fucked up?
Well i don't really remember anything after this.
We were talking and i passed out.
I woke up and they were both laying next to me.
I was butt naked, they had there bra and panties on.
SHIT!!

i need to quit drinking so dam much.
one of them had work today so she left early around 9:30
The other one hung around and we went up to the pool on the rooftop.
We laid around for a few hours, talked, slept, laughed.
More people started coming up to the pool and the next thing we know there is a DJ up there. i guess they have pool parties every saturday.
NO breakfast at this point. So what do i do?

I asked the concierge how much a room is there a night and I believe he said it is $70. The logisitics would be perfect if you grab a room here.
If I ever come back to Santo Domingo, I will most definitely be getting a room here Friday or Saturday night with a friend.
Young, hot girls come here. They are guaranteed to stay open until at least 5 in the morning but they usually will stay open until 7 in the morning.
Don't think there is much to do around here other then the small nightclub.
When I asked a cabby where a good nightclub is (make sure you say discotecha; a "nightclub" here is a horrorhouse) he said he takes lots of hot girls to GOLD also.
So GOLD is definitely a hot spot right now.
This is the only nightclub i've been too so far so i have nothing to compare it to.

This place is a tourist trap guys. Tons of Americans, They drive the price up on everything. I went to get a haircut and wow i got hustled.
Lots of places are closed on Sundays so i was excited to find a barber open.
I have gotten 2 haircuts while here and paid 200 pesos each time.
This guys advertised price was 500 pesos. Pricey but i took it.
Then he asks me if he wants me to shave.
"no it's okay. i shave at home".
"C'mon man you need to shave."
"Okay. sure."
So he shaves me and then he asks me i want my face washed.
I lost my facial cleaner so i said yes.
He put on a mask that he left on for at least 10 minutes.
I knew i was gonna get husteld at this point.
Then he wants to shampoo my hair.
"No, you don't need to wash it. I'm going to shower anyway."
"Cmon man, you should wash now so you can go talk to chicks"
"Ahh okay."
Then he shapes my eyebrows or something.
My bill came out to about $35
WOW! Most expensive haircut of my life.
I could have gotten a hooker for this price!
I'm pretty upset at this point.

EDIT I forgot to write about the fact that i only had 700 pesos on me (Almost half of what he was charging me). I tried to tell him to just take it and let me go. He didn't agree. He called his manicure girl (who was also trying to hustle me into a manicure) and told her to walk me to the ATM. I'm a white/latin guy. People see me walking with a dark girl (especially if she is not young and hot) and they assume i am with a hooker. So people giving me wierd looks left and right. She was pretty funny and was trying to get me get a "massage".

Dude that's hilarious. I had the exact same experience the other day when i went to get my haircut at what I'm sure was the exact same place. The dude insisted on shaving me and washing my hair and face... he wanted 45 dollars after quoting me like ten. I gave him 500 pesos which I think is like 12 bucks and told him to basically fuck off. I was so pissed. He also kept trying to push his shady masseuses on me.... Don't get your hair cut in the colonial zone! And don't pay more than they quote you.. that's bull shit

haha well my first problem was i didn't have my contacts in so i couldn't read all the prices. I just looked at the haircut for mens price which was $RD 500.
When i went to pay, i saw the advertised prices and he charged me accordingly. So, didn't leave much room to negotiate.

Mech- this is where i stayed last night. I like the spot but there is not too much action around here other then the casino and the tittie bar. I walked around for a few hours and didn't see any cute girls (other then the ones working the casino) Plus, I have been spending too much money so need to downgrade to a hostel.
I am tired of dealing with the cab drivers here so that is why i want to move to zona colonial.
The cabbies in santiago always took what i gave them. The ones here are almost non-negotiable to the point where i'm fed up taking them.
I would take cab drives twice as far and pay 125 pesos and get no complaints.
Here i give 150 to the cabbies and they always want more money.
It seems as if most of the cabbies have an oath to never accept less then 200 pesos for a cab ride if they pick you up around a hotel or are taking you to a hotel..

My final thoughts on Santo Domingo..

Cabs

Get the number to the cab company there. Call them to send you a cab. They will tell you the color and # of the cab and give you a better rate then the dudes on the street.

I'm surprised someone hasn't busted out a data sheet on Santo Domingo. I would think it's the top destination in the DR.

Great thread! Overall I don't think Zona Colonial is the answer in Santo Domingo but it's ok to get your feet wet. It takes a while to figure SD out and the locals are loyal to their respected hoods. I could say go with the flow with them but also may worry about giving advice that may be a safety concern. Take it slow. +1 to Sly for the reports
