If you have an i<device> you can download podcasts here:

spanishpod101.com

and just listen to them while you sleep. I am doing that with French classes.

That girl in this link is from Montreal, and I approached and introduced myself in French [Image: smile.gif]

so, I guess it works.

It's a great notion to think you can learn while sleeping, without putting in any effort, but I don't see it backed by any kind of proof that it works.

Agree with Roosh. There's a reason you need sleep and that's to rest your brain and body from active work, i.e. thinking. With that said, your brain actually functions more while sleeping than watching t.v.

Hmm..Ok well then my next plan would be to only play Spanish instructional CDs in my car. Which ones are the best?
I will try Mixx's podcast as well.

Definitely not. I've got qualifications in French and Spanish backed by a shit ton of hard work saying this notion is pie in the sky.

Would make for some great Inception style kick music though.

In theory it's a great idea...become productive while you're asleep! Your brain is still functioning while you're asleep, hence why you get awoken by noises in the night etc. But I don't think there's any research to suggest there's much cognitive learning going on while you sleep.

Also language is a combination of speaking, writing, listening and reading that come together to help you best understand it, e.g. the more you speak a word the more it's ingrained into your memory.

Obviously you'd do other stuff in your spare time, but in your sleep you'd only get listening, which isn't a lot.

Unfortunately not many quick fixes to learning a language. Best recommendation I can give to get better quicker is do everything in the language - to a level you feel comfortable in once you know the vocab.

This could be:

- Facebook in Spanish
- Cell in Spanish
- Watch Spanish films with subtitles in Spanish - highly recommended
- Read Spanish
- Listen to Spanish music
- And of course gaming hot Spanish-speaking chicks (the best way to learn!)

Although my scenario was a bit different to you, I went to Spain as a beginner, and was fluent after 5-6 months. Granted I spoke it every day, but it came on rapidly by doing all the above.

Apparently this stuff was big in the 80s - learning in your sleep, going retro El Mech!

Try it but I doubt it works. If it was that easy no one would have to put any effort into learning anything, just whack all the info on an MP3 and play it while we sleep. We'd all be geniuses in no time.

I think it might even be unhealthy because you can't rest perfectly well this way.

No I'm serious. I'm having a hard time with this and because I sleep with the tv on and pick things up I thought that I could make a shift.

If sleeping with Shakira or Salma Hayak, that would no doubt would motivate you to learn harder.

If sleeping with a Spanish whale, not so much.
