End of the Year Recap: Where have you been in 2011?

I know there's one thread like this that started earlier in the year, but now that the end of the year is here, I figure a new thread now would take into account everyone's travels for the whole year.

Where has everyone been in 2011? I'll start with myself:

USA - San Francisco; New York City; Washington, DC; Philadelphia; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Burlington, Vermont

Canada - Toronto; Montreal

Europe - Madrid; Barcelona; London; Dusseldorf; Rome; Istanbul

North Africa - Marrakesh, Morocco; Casablanca, Morocco; Fes, Morocco; Tangier, Morocco; Tunis, Tunisia; Cairo, Egypt; Giza, Egypt; Alexandria, Egypt

Sub-Saharan Africa
- Asmara, Eritrea

Middle East - Tel Aviv, Israel; Haifa, Israel; Netanya, Israel; Jerusalem; Ramallah, Palestine; Nablus, Palestine; Hebron, Palestine; Jericho, Palestine; Amman, Jordan; Petra, Jordan; Dead Sea, Jordan; Damascus, Syria; Beirut, Lebanon; S'anaa, Yemen; Dubai, UAE; Abu Dhabi, UAE

I think that's about it for 2011. I really gotta hit up Latin America again in 2012, like I did in 09-10. That's my favorite part of the world thus far.

We should also add our favorite/least favorite places of the year.

About half the places I'd been before. Half were new.

Good idea.

I'd say my favorite was Barcelona. I swear, that has to be the closest thing to a perfect city (climate, food, partying, beaches). I've never met a single person who didn't love Barcelona.

My least favorite city was definitely S'anaa, Yemen. It was like a war zone. But the people are friendly and hospitable.

The biggest surprise was Istanbul. I wasn't ready for how epic that city really is. I'm definitely going back again.

Favorite would have to be northern Brazil especially Salvador. I had one of the best times of my life there. Ever.

Biggest surprise: also Istanbul. That place is amazing, one of the world's great cities. I also was amazed at how awesome Central Asia is as a place to travel. It's not really good for girls or partying but it's really scenic and an interesting mix of cultures, history, and religion.

Least favorite: Bulgaria and Romania. Just bland to me. And I thought Ethiopia was a bit over-rated with pretty unfriendly people and the girls weren't as hot as advertised but I went in the rainy season so maybe that was a factor.

My year has been weak! I moved to Miami to travel and haven't done so yet (At least to unexplored territory). This year I vow to make it to at least 3 countries I haven't been to. Probably gonna be DR, Colombia, and another Caribbean island, preferably Cuba.

End of the Year Recap: Where have you been in 2011?

It was a quite year for me too. Started the year in Cebu, Philippines for 3 weeks then back to BKK, Phuket until mid Feb. Returned home and went for a weekend to visit a cousin in Detroit and then, the next day literally flew back to Asia, to Tokyo. Then in July, 2 weeks in Thailand (Krabi and BKK) with a cousin. Next year, I plan on returning to Asia and exploring more, specailly the DR and returning to my beloved Brasil. So far, this year, my favorite place has been BKK, a place I will be calling home soon and the ultimate place, Tokyo. My dream is to live in Tokyo, that place is simply off the charts. Nothing on Earth can come close to it, let alone compare to it.

Funny that some of you guys mentioned Istanbul as a fun place. A cousin of mine went there earlier this year and they loved it. Would love to see a data sheet on it from those of you who have been there.

Nomadicdude, awesome that you're on a RTW trip. Do you have a blog? if not, start one man as I would love to know more about it as a RTW trip is big time on my list to do things in the next 2-3 years. Start a thread here telling us about the different places you've been and are at the moment. That would be very cool!

End of the Year Recap: Where have you been in 2011?

Tokyo for 5 months, January to June doing an internship. Shit was crazy, stayed during and after the quake and all. For most of March and April, I felt like one of the only foreigners in the whole city left. Lived in Shibuya too, which made life seem like a joke with the amount of fine ass girls around.

Chicago in July for a week.

Been in L.A. area since August, planning to go to Hong Kong in March/April 2012.

Will finish the year in Vegas.

Favorite of the year: Tokyo
Least Favorite of the year: Los Angeles

End of the Year Recap: Where have you been in 2011?

It has been a little slow year for travelling. I started out allready early in January, but after the summer, I havent been anywhere.

Americas: Hawaii and north west coast.
Europe: Benelux, Spain, France, Ukraine and Romania.

I especially enjoyed Hawaii, Spain, The Netherlands and Ukraine.

My targets for 2012 is split in two. If I manage to generate some online income, I will aim for plan 1. If my current situation continue, I will settle for more moderate plan2.

1. East Russian ->North East China -> Yunnan province -> south east asia
+ Some weeks in Brazil.

2.
Brazil + North of Portugal and Spain.

Sorry man, I actually don't have a blog. Didn't want to get tied down to writing everyday about what I was doing. I'm towards the very end of a two year RTW trip (been to over 45 countries so far on this trip). I'm going home to the States pretty soon. Spent most of my time in Asia, Africa and South America. Happy to answer any questions about doing a RTW. Highly recommend it, though 2 years is probably a bit too long. I'm starting to get tired. Need a break from travelling.

Nomadicdude,
fair enough, but it would be a great idea to start a thread here like Lumiere did about his RTW trip where you would post about your itenary, and other important details of such a trip that others who are interested in that, would find important. You don't have to post every day, just from time to time whenever there's a question posted.

What airline alliance did you go with? Star Alliance? One world or Sky World? Which cities did you fly to? That kind of info on a thread just for your RTW trip.

I did a 6 month latin America trip that started in October last year and carried on into this year and that's been it so far. Next month I'm off to Asia for 6 months. Thailand is the first stop, Burma will be visited too but aside from that I've no real plans. Been around SE Asia before so no burning desire to visit any country, will likely spend most of if in Thailand partying.
