Best-Performing Cities: Don’t Mess With Texas
12-16-2011, 10:05 PM
The more I see these "top lists" the more I think they are just a bunch of BS. I live in San Antonio (#1 on the list) and grew up here and the economy and job outlook is shit here. There is no good job outlook because businesses arent thriving and businesses arent thriving because people dont want to spend money, we have a culture of being stingy with money here. Rock bands avoid SA on their tours because tickets just dont sell. Its the city culture not to spend money, quite different form cities like NY or LA or even nearby Austin where people love to spend money and businesses thrive as a result. Only 3 things sell in SA: Alcohol, food, and the San Antonio Spurs (basketball). As a result SA is one of the fattest cities in the nation, has one of the highest rates of drunk driving and DUI and for several years the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the US, probably still does. SA is one of the worst cities in the US in many ways. Most people that come here to go to college ie University of Texas at San Antonio leave and dont stay in San Antonio, the ones with good grades transfer to ACC or UT, they would rather go to a Community College than stay in San Antonio. I grew up here and as soon as I graduate im leaving. Im currently job searching in Austin where people actually post jobs on Craigslist that arent scams, like personal banker at a retail bank, it blew my mind how much better the job market is in Austin than here. You need a masters degree to land an entry level job at a bank here in SA.

I know, but the video and article I linked to had that title because so many of the top performing cities (economically) are in Texas.

I get ya. Sorry dude. I like Texas. You can't go wrong with the climate all year round. Austin has some cute girls. Plus Austin promotes itself as the "Silicon Valley" of Texas which is true. My old employer is based there right next door to Apple, Google, Oracle, Microsoft etc so this really drives the local economy.
I haven't watched the video, I'm too lazy, how did Austin fare?
