Government legally mandates airlines to hide airfare taxes now!

I went on Spirit air to book a a weekend trip to Colombia, and read this as I looked at the (low) fares that no longer reflected taxes.

WARNING: NEW GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS REQUIRE US TO HIDE TAXES IN FARES!

This is not consumer-friendly or in your best interest. It's wrong and you shouldn't stand for it.

Starting January 24, 2012, fares are distorted.

Why?

Thanks to the U.S. Department of Transportation's latest fare rules, Spirit must now HIDE the government's taxes and fees in your fares.

If the government can hide taxes in your airfares, then they can carry out their hidden agenda and quietly increase their taxes. (Yes, such talks are already underway.)

And if they can do it to the airline industry, what's next?

As the transparency leader and most consumer-friendly airline, Spirit DOES NOT support this new USDOT mandate. We believe the better form of transparency is to break out costs so customers know exactly what they're buying.

What can you do to help stop this injustice?

Join us in keeping government taxes and fees low and transparent by contacting your elected officials.

WTF?

Spirit has been profitable and its obvious that the company that probably has more add-ons and hidden fees than any other company would be upset about this legislation.

In fact, Spirit is using this occasion to come up with another bogus fee: http://articles.cnn.com/2012-02-01/trave...=PM:TRAVEL

Yup, makes sense. The only reason I fly spirit is because of their ultra convenient flight to Medellin from FLL. the departure/arrival times are perfect coming or going to MDE.

Otherwise, I hate spirit - especially when they start shoving credit card applications down your throat via the loudspeaker on EVERY FUCKING FLIGHT!!

this extra 2 dollar fee is horse-shit!! They already charge 140USD if you so much as decide to change your flight 1 minute after you book!

Time to start exploring Avianca again, at least they don't hide behind fees with their prices, and fuck you while they look in your eyes, not while you sleep. [Image: dodgy.gif]

We're on the same page. I'm still pissed they auto-ed my club membership b4 I even realized it, lol. I'll fly them but would rather do a major airline if possible. You're in Florida and seem to have some flexibility so it's probably great for you.

My favorite airline right now is Copa or Avianca, if I can get a good price ... but I always have to transfer so my situation is different. I'm sure the new sticker prices will be a shock at first, but its what I have to pay anyway so I don't see the big deal. If the feds try to raise the taxes, I'm sure there would be a lot written on it whether it goes in the total or is itemized. We'll see ...

This is typical of Low Cost Carrier operations. Hiding the taxes will never work for regular carriers that operate internationally as most European nations require transparency over airline fares.

So Spirit sends me a statement for FREE. When will they try to start charging customers for the e-mail statement they send you?

Spirit is bitching but I think this rule is a good thing - it promotes transparency in airline prices. How many times have you booked a ticket and gotten whacked w/fee's you never knew existed?
