It's funny to see these ads. Back in the early 20th century, being too skinny was a big problem. The school lunch program was instituted during either world war 1 or 2 because recruitees and draftees were chronically underweight for basic training.

It's sort of am incredible achievement that we now have too much food. As someone who struggles with keeping weight on, i'm terrified of how a famine would impact me.

What struck me about these ads was the idea of it being difficult for women to get dates rather than that the skinny/fat dynamic has changed. A woman who's now 5-10 lbs overweight is not in the same position as a woman who was 5-10 lbs "underweight" in the 50's.
