Alternative / non-mainstream bands or music acts you like

This thread got me going...

I am always in search of new bands and acts that don't quite get their way to the mainstream, but it never occured to me asking you guys over here for any indications.

What kind of music you like that doesn't hit the spotlight? It can be weird, heavy, experimental or not, just something that goes as different from what you usually get out there in the sun.

I'll start with a heavy choice. It is a crazy stoner/psychadelic/noise rock band from japan: BORIS.

Rock on!

When I work I listen to two songs repeatedly:

Rob Dougan - Will you follow me
Rob Dougan - Clubbed to death

Its 6 am but off top

Dj screw. Experimental dj who slowed down songs. Completely changed my city. I forget that some people don't know who he is outside of the south.

I think you already know about old punk since u mentioned black flag in a thread.

Fu manchu are good stoner rock. Fugazi with ian mckaye from minor threat have some real good shit out.

I am so glad I created this thread, so many great music so far!

(I've never mentioned Black Flag, they are old school punk, right? Fu Machu and Fugazi are known to me, nice stoner rock)

I was completely amazed at Jon Gomm, and I didn't know Rob Dougan either, very nice, quite dramatic/epic.

(Just returned from yet another fruitless night out, got lured in by this attention whore with a BF...nice to have good music to listen to upon my return).

Sending some electronica I like, great stuff:

Some of my favorites:

The Dear Hunter - sort of an alternative, progressive mix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mQO_XE40f4

Between The Buried & Me - crazy progressive death metal, with some real nice Pink Floydish ambient parts intermixed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxPVyPXKKhU

Porcupine Tree - mellow, dark, ambient, electronic, jazzy, metal, experimental music
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SF5Rtm5i3I

I really cannot listen to any music that stays in one genre. My favorites tend to be bands that can encompass a huge variety of genres and sounds within single songs even. Boris is excellent, as is Jon Gomm...holy shit

Amour Fou - Fugazi is absolutely essential to my life. Nice mention.

Here's some stuff most of you guys have never heard before but is worth a listen:

Dent May "That Feeling"

- My friend put out this record and I just think it's really good. If you like the Beach Boys, you'll love this.

The Magnetic Fields "Strange Powers"

- Stephin Merritt has many bands, The Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes, The 6ths, Gothic Archies and is probably the finest songwriter this country has produced since Irving Berlin. Not to mention, he is extremely prolific. Future Bible Hero, indeed.

Happy Birthday "Girls FM"

Ariel Pink "Round & Round"

- This guy has released literally 30-40 albums from his bedroom since the late 90's, very popular underground. This is a track from his first 'proper' studio album. Won many of the best of 2010 awards from various magazines and blogs. Good shit. Love this guy.

Bauhaus "Silent Hedges"

- One of the first bands to be considered 'goth rock' but I just see them as a weird branch of guitar oriented art rock type stuff. Brilliant guitar and lyrics. Daniel Ash and Peter Murphy = unstoppable.

Beat Happening "Bury The Hammer"

- The Seattle explosion most likely wouldn't have happened if not for these guys. One of the very few bands that actually got better with each successive album.

I'll post some more stuff later if I get around to it. Good thread.

The late Nujabes and the group "The Seatbelts" were primarily known for anime music, but it was damn good anime music (Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo).

Some nice music coming.

I particullarly liked J Dilla. The Seatbelts, Ratatat and Porcupine Tree are well known to me, great stuff.

An act I used to like a lot few years ago, unfortunatelly their latest albums are not up to par with their first two:

Amour fou - did u ever check out dj screw? King diamond/mercyful fate is another singer and group to check out. He has a crazy voice and cool lyrics/stories. You've probably heard of prodigy but I just thought of them. I hate techno and electronic shit but I've always liked them.

Godspeed You! is one of my top 5 fav bands. I love the whole of Constellation Records... whenever I hit Montreal (hope it'll be soon enough, I have some good friends that moved there) one of my stops will definitely be their store.

I was pretty much a post-rock junkie few years back, even had a post rock / prog inspired instrumental band.

Do you know Elfin Saddle? They are somewhat new at Constellation, but I like them a lot, hard to label their sound:

I am also into heavy music pretty much. Pelican is a good "instrumetal" act I like, I think they are from Seattle... my favourite track of theirs:

SUNN kicks ass!! Not for everyone, though... but that's the whole point I guess hehe

I just randomly ran into this band in youtube. Initially I found them a bit too emo-ish, but I gradually started liking it.

Apparently they are Austrialian, can't remember any bands I heard from there, nice.

Really, this weekend I randomly ran into some great alternative rock bands in the net! I am feeling really bad, as I went the old school way and bought their cds, as I really really liked them. Here are the other two:

(Just listen to the goddamn bass, man! Evil! I'm a bass player...)

And another Aussie band:
