Being a Push-Over

I think this is a problem that I have- people are able to physically push me over very easily. This might not have to do with anything, but I'm a skinny guy. Does anyone have any advice on standing in a way that is not so push-overable? Or any advice in creating a storng physical presence without having to bulk up is appreciated.

There was a girl here last night and I think I fucked it up because I couldn't balance.

I don't think theres anyway around it. Bulking up using Starting Stength (see lifestyle section) is the easiest way. If you don't want to bulk practice a martial art or boxing or something.... good for balance, strength, confidence, etc.

Bulk up. There is no good reason to remain a skinny guy. Only pros to building more muscle, no cons (beyond getting too big or pulling muscles). You're never going to project the image you want when you're small. I was there too.

I've always been skinny, but I've never been a "push-over". If you project weakness, people will take advantage of you. If you project strength, most people will leave you alone.

I suspect that you get pushed over, not only because of your body, but also because your presence doesn't command any respect. Maybe you look and carry yourself like a push-over. I wish you could post a picture of yourself so we could see exactly what you look like. The way you speak, the way you dress, your body language, you eyes. People read this stuff and decide if they can mess with you or not.

I imagine you as a nerdy, nice guy, who is quick to say..."excuse me"...or..."pardon me, when people come into your personal space. Maybe you even move politely out of the way when people walk past you.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing. Its ok to be friendly.

But, you can't let people dominate your personal space.

How do your command more respect?

I'm 5'9 and about 185 pounds, pretty damn strong and I do muay thai.

17 year old Thai kids, 145 pounds, who have done muay thai their whole life can easily tool me around in muay thai training.

Learn to fight man!

Bulk up a bit if you can. Simply being big, however, doesn't mean that you're actually able to defend yourself or fuck someone up. I've definitely seen scrappy skinny guys fuck up big dudes.

And yeah Giovonny is right - presence is an important factor.

If you're at the point where you can't balance, then it's not your presence but your physique that needs work. And it's not even most of your physique, just the core and legs.

So here's what I would do if I were you:

- Eat more. Eggs, chicken, pasta, etc...in other words, foods that are conducive to fitness with high protein or complex carbohydrates.
- Squat 5x5 on Mondays and Fridays
- Deadlift 5x5 on Wednesdays

You don't need to bench, curl, or do any of the other shit that meatheads do. Just squat or deadlift three times a week. This will strengthen your legs, butt, back, and abdominals.

Each workout should take less than fifteen minutes including your warmup. In case you don't know, a 5x5 is where you load the bar with weight so heavy that you can only lift it five or six times per set, then do five sets of five reps each.

If you feel sore (not injured, but sore) for the first two weeks, you're doing it right.

Three months of this is about 13 hours in the gym, and will make a difference if you're eating right.
