Wizard's Guide To Budget Wardrobe Building

One of the first things I learned when I first started down the path to learning the game was the importance of taking care of the basics. You can't excel in the game if you ignore the fundamental aspects of it, and nothing is more fundamental than taking care of your appearance.

A lot of guys take issue with this because there worried about becoming some pussy whipped metrosexual. Quite frankly I think this is just an excuse to avoid learning about men's fashion, and doing the basic maintenance required to look your best.

This doesn't mean that real problems don't exist when it comes to upgrading your style. For me I knew the biggest issue was going to be money, and trying to strike a good balance between quality and my budget.

After spending several months attacking the problem, I've put together a list of resources that have allowed me to upgrade my wardrobe, and maintain a budget while doing so, so with that in mind let me begin.

1) http://www.ebay.com

This might seem like an obvious one to some, but not a lot of guys really appreciate the kind of good deals you can find here. I've bought everything from pants, shirts, to a leather jacket.

The prices are often cheaper than retail stores, and you can find a much larger variety. There are some downsides, and things I would caution you about when using eBay though.

- Never order a suit, or any used clothing items off ebay. A suit is something you should be there to make sure it fits well, and used clothing... is used clothing and not worth it.

- Always check the feedback score of a seller to make sure they have a solid reputation. Only spend your money on those with a 99% satisfaction rating.

- Always check the shipping dates, because some times they can take up to 15 days.

You can be scammed on eBay if not careful, but you can also save yourself a lot of money to.

2) http://www.amazon.com

Again this is one of those obvious ones you'd think everyone would be using, but they don't. I have used Amazon to buy some really nice dress shirts, jeans, watches, and other things at really good prices.

The same rules that applied on ebay apply here, check the feedback and always make sure to use the search filters to narrow down the results to something within your price range.

3) http://www.zazzle.com

Zazzle is one of my favorite clothing websites to browse, it's a place where people can sell their own custom designed clothing for a profit. This means you can always find some unique, or interesting if you look hard enough.

The prices are budget friendly, and selection is insane. I would like to warn you guys though that there is a potential for you to look like a moron if you choose the wrong piece from here.

So keep that in mind when browsing, but if done correctly this website is a great source for guys to add some unique pieces to their wardrobes.

4) http://www.shoes.com or http://www.famousfootwear.com

Each of these websites offer an amazing selection of shoes, and with prices I haven't seen beaten anywhere. There also good for helping the fashionably challenged find a style of shoes that actually matches what they're looking for.

I would recommend this place as your first stop shopping places for shoes in general.

5) http://www.megasuits.com

I've decided to include this website, because I actually was able to buy a decent suit off here for a good price, and then get it tailored very reasonably. I did this partially because I don't exactly live in the fashion capital of the free world, and finding a good suit place around here within my budget is extremely hard.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, then this place could be really useful for you. As has been pointed out by great guys like Mixx, a tailored suit can really upgrade your game.

6) http://www.sunglasshut.com

Not exactly my thing, but it might be useful for those of you in warmer climates who want to find a stylish but budget friendly pair of sunglasses. They have a pretty good selection, and you can narrow the search down by gradient, anti-reflective, etc.

7) http://www.eflasks.com or http://www.redenvelope.com/mens-accessories-rfmaa or

These are some unique accessory items that you might choose to compliment your wardrobe. I included the custom flask site because of some reports I've read about some guys dealing with the crazy drink prices in some countries.

All of these websites together can help any guy build a higher quality wardrobe then 90% of the guys out there but on a budget. If there is enough interest I might consider doing another one of these posts that focuses on designer brands that can be bought cheaper online.

If there are any questions, then please feel free.

Great thread. However i think it would be more helpful if we actually give direct links about some nice clothes that we could buy. Can you give us direct link on ebay of tshirts, shoes, trainers, sunglasses that we could buy? Because the majority of us already know where to buy these things, however some have better taste than others. Show us what to buy.

Pitt,
That would be rather pointless considering I don't know what anyone looks like or what there budgets are like. I can't exactly offer recommendations without knowing what exactly I have to work with, and I'm not claiming to be a fashion guru by any extension.

Your best bet is to take some time to browse some of these links, and do it yourself. I suppose if someone is willing to post their stats, I would be willing to offer some suggestions. I just don't want to provide useless information.

Regards,
Wizard

Here's what I used to do before I had excess cash to build my wardrobe:

- Pick a few stores that have quality clothing within your budget. For example... if you're on a really low budget go for H&M, if you have a little more cash, check out Banana Republic or something similar.

- Make sure you have a solid understanding of the return policies at the stores you want to shop at. If you can, try and pick stores that will give you cash back if you return something under specific conditions (keep the tags on, etc.)

- Grab your credit card and go shopping. Pick out a ton of outfits that you think will look good. Grab a good amount of clothes and then go home to try everything on. Mix and match certain things, experiment with colors, layers, etc. Take photos and ask stylish friends for their opinions.

- Figure out the two or three best outfits you've chosen and keep those. Then return everything else.

As for general tips on style, just start looking around. See which guys you find stylish and try to figure out what they're doing. Pick a few models in magazines like GQ that have a similar body type/hair color/skin tone as you and base your outfits on theirs.

Hope that helps a little bit.

I found some discontinued Diesel jeans on Ebay that were exactly what I wanted for only $25. But I new my exact style and size.

I would never buy a suit without trying it on. You need the jacket to fit properly before altering.

All sunglasses are made in China for less than $3. Don't pay too much.

Pick a color scheme for shoes and belts. Black is easiest. I strongly recommend cap toe shoes, because they are a really versatile piece that can be business or formal. Shop on sale after July 4th and after Christmas. But here is the caveat: get exactly what you need. Don't get a double-breasted blazer on sale when you really need a single-breasted.

Thanks Wizard, this thread is money in the bank.

For those who aren't concerned about the $ aspect: http://www.mrporter.com is an amazing resource. And you can find some amazing styles and recommendations on the site.

Also, for custom made suits under $500, http://www.indochino.com is supposedly really good. I've never ordered a suit from them but some of my friends have and they looked really good from what I could tell.

In a similar vein to zazzle, you can find some really cool, totally unique very limited edition or small batch made t shirts and the like on http://www.etsy.com I have several t shirts that are just made by people with their own screenprinting press in their houses. Check out this seller for an example of what I'm talking about: http://www.etsy.com/shop/diatonic?ref=seller_info

Thanks for your contribution Farmageddon, your right about etsy and if your really into hipster girls then it can be a great place, but there not my thing. Also http://www.mrporter.com looks like a great catch, and I will definitely be adding it to my list.

Thanks for looking out!

Thanks for the links Soma, the more options guys have here the better chance they have to build up their wardrobe, and save some money. If anyone else has any links, then please feel free to share them.

The only problem with ordering clothes online is sizes. I need to try something on before buying.

Zara's good for stuff you're only going to wear to clubs.

I wouldn't buy their suits for constant daily wear to work or whatever, but for like $250 to look decent when you go out, why not?

Best option is always to just get stuff made though, and for $500 you can get a suit from Thick as Thieves that will fit great and be MTM.

Not to blow you away with my level of class and sophistication, but I buy most of my clothes from stores like Ross, Marshalls, and TJ Max. When high-end stores change seasons and get a new shipment of clothes, they send all their unsold stuff to these discount stores at very low prices.

Ross's motto is ..."Designer brands for less"

Also, if you know where to look, you can get new clothes at 2nd hand prices. These are at 2nd hand stores in rich neighborhoods. Rich people donate clothes and often times the clothes are brand new and unworn with the tags still on.

There is a Goodwill store near Stanford university that is famous for this.

I got a brand new pair of Prada loafers for 6 bucks! Never been worn! And some Italian leather shoes for 5.

Giovanny - excellent post. I've never considered thrift shops around million dollar neighborhoods. I need to keep that in mind.
