Working out with Sledge Hammers

Giovonny -

Have you done it for a long time?

Why didn't you like it?

I've done it many times over the years. I like it. It's a great exercise for learning how to transfer power from your legs, through your core, and out to your arms. You are exploding through your upper body. That's important for people who throw punches. Or, guys that play baseball.

For people who don't throw punches or hit a baseball, they might get a relatively low ROI

I mean, if you wanna lose weight you are better off cleaning up your diet.

If you wanna build stamina, you are better off running sprints.

If you wanna build muscle, you are better off squatting, dead lifting, and pressing heavy weight.

If you wanna build power, you are better off doing clean and jerks, hang cleans, push presses, and stuff like that

It really just depends on your goals.

For me, the best part about it is beating the fuck out of something.

I know you are a boxer so it will help you add power to your punches.

Don't get me wrong, its a good exercise and it has its place in any athletes program.

I really have a hard time believing any of you that said Sledge Hammers are not a good workout have actually done it.

I think it is the most brutal, all-encompassing, efficient workout there is.

I really want to see someone go all out for five 1 minute and a half with intervals with 80+ degree weather and tell me they aren't getting a workout.

That is if they can talk and aren't puking.

I do sledge hammer workouts. Even got a buddy nicknamed sledge.

Usually once a month. Used to do them more when I was playing ball in college.

Great for getting that hip drive torque like power. Let the hammer go high and slam it down as hard as you can trying to break the tire.

Tabata sledge hammers will make you puke for sure.

And it's some real life shit. If you need to sledge hammer someone for some reason one day you will be very well prepared.

I did a job a while back with cinder blocks and a sledge hammer. I was basically carrying cinder blocks off of a truck to different spots and breaking them open with a sledge hammer. It was easy at first but doing that for hours was a bitch.

I go home regularly to help my parents maintain our family property of 25 acres. My Mom has severe asthma and my Dad's getting up there in years, so most of what I do for them is very tough physical work: clearing land, chopping firewood and general landscaping jobs. Swinging mattocks, sledgehammers, axes and so on.

In short, it kills.

Yeah, it's all part of the game of being online.

People have "ideas" about things.

They share these "ideas" without trying anything and often even have strong opinions.

If you like sledge hamers, do Tabata intervals with them.

Misery:

Some guy who has never done them will say, "Tabata? That's only 4 minutes of cardio. Sounds easy."

Thank me later after your next conditioning session, G.

There's something raw about swinging an axe or sledge, it's a killer workout.
Can you get a dead large tire from a tire shop for free? Or how much should I expect to pay for one?

Yes you are right, it is brutal. I'm not the largest lad but last summer me and my cousin went to work on his paved driveway in 30C heat for around 2 hours with sledgehammers. It took only 10 minutes before we were exhausted and half an hour we decided it was more efficient for us to take turns rather than using 2.

Those Tabata intervals sound like a great way to maximize time at the gym on busy days.

On your recommendation, checked a bit online and found this site with some examples of workouts:

http://tabatatraining.org/

I tried a sample circuit today:

1. Incline pushups
2. Decline pushups
3. Pull ups
4. Leg raises
5. Incline pushups
6. Decline pushups
7. Pull ups
8. Leg raises

Damn. Took me 10 minutes to get my hear rate back to normal.

A few questions:
- Any specific workouts within the Tabata framework that you'd recommend?

- What gains has it led to?

- Do you use it as a permanent substitute to longer, lower intensity traditional workouts, or only when you're pressed for time?

Thanks for the advice.

I like tabata intervals on bikes.

5 minut warm up.
Tabata hell.
10 minute cool down.

You can't go wrong though. It's a great way to lose fat and improve cardio.

Cool, will give it a try on the bike, thanks.

Did a 4 min session on the heavy bag today, 20 seconds all out, 10 seconds rest x 8. 10 minute break, then repeat two more times. By the end of the third session I could barely stand on my feet.

Seems like this can work with a lot of different routines.

Have a towel on bike. So much lactic acid builds up in legs that you may dry heave.

Just wanted to post an update on this. Tried a tabata interval on a stat bike. It's an excellent workout, and really good cardio. Honestly though it didn't tear me up as much as the boxing Tabata.

Also tried this with swimming. One lap (25 meters) sprint, rest 10-15 secs, then another. Repeat 8 times, killer workout.

Thanks again for the advice.

Sledge hammer workouts are very trendy today. They help you grip, shoulders, triceps, upper back, lower back, hip flexors , and core while being great for cardio. The main benefit for boxers and fighters tend to be the mental aspect of hitting through an object while keeping your punching muscles tight. You get to practice over and over again getting better feedback than when you hit a punching bag. If you want power always try to drive through the tire to the ground, not just use the recoil to get more reps.
