Brain Fog from Gluten

So for the past three weeks I have been suffering from immense brain fog. I have not been feeling myself lately and I have had these symptoms:
- Lack of mental clarity
- Forgetfulness
- Confusion
- Depression
- Unable to start a task and finish it

A couple of days ago I got tired and I got sick of it, I decided to change something. I watched this video and I usually HATE hippie bullshit - one of them being the Gluten-Free diet.

But this one guy on Youtube claims that one of the main causes of brain fog is gluten and processed foods, I honestly didn't believe it but I have been feeling so bad I thought let's try cutting all gluten.

3 days in - 90% of my brain fog is totally gone, I can finally feel like that cloud in my brain is gone. I hate to admit this, but gluten may have been the cause, I also cut out porn since a week too so that may have something to do with it and have been eating many probiotics (as the guy in the video suggests)

Apparently the reason for this is that gluten builds up in the gut and inflames it, causing toxins to go to the brain causing the brain fog.

I'm just writing my observations but if you are suffering from this give it a try, it may just be the cure to improving mental clarity and overall better mental well-being, eventually I will go back to eating gluten and see if it comes back - then I can confirm if this is actually true. Has anyone else had this kind of experience?

It's possible. Your gut is critical.

Also, try to floss every day. Lots of folks have gum infections

Sleep, hydration, stress and a host of other things can contribute to brain fog.

I also get brain fog when I consume too much food. When I first started lifting I got brain fog until I cleaned up my diet hardcore.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

What foods containing gluten did you cut out? Good that you found something that potentially worked for you

I would say in my experience it's the other way around - brain fog is a symptom of depression.

When I get depressed, it's usually from stress and anxiety (caused by a range of factors both physical and mental i.e. my beliefs/mindset and thoughts).

When you get stressed - your body and brains gets flooded with cortisol as a signal to your body that whatever you are thinking or doing is not healthy or sustainable long term.

Cortisol wears down your body, but particularly impedes normal brain function, which can lead to almost every symptom you listed above.

This has also been my experience with burn out in life as well when I push myself too hard for too long or experience an extremely high stress short period - there's only so long your body can take the cortisol dosage before things like your immune system start giving way, and the depression sticks around for longer and longer until you start finding it hard to get up and move around and doing basic life things.

Very, very important to find a sustainable daily routine that works for you as you progress in life - such an underrated factor behind mental health problems.

Like you mentioned - diet can be an important part of this.

edit: just did a google search after I wrote out my reply as I was interested in the exact physiology behind it. Check out this article - https://www.tuw.edu/health/how-stress-af...the-brain/

OP congrats! You self diagnosed and fixed yourself... that should give you mad confidence! Take that
Confidence with you and unleash it at every area of your life! What you just did leads to true confidence and inner peace.

Yes. Gluten can do this, so can milk proteins. Best thing to do is get a GI test, then you know for sure. This isn’t hippy stuff, it’s true those who choose to stay ignorant can and will suffer. This is why wisdom is so much more valuable than money.

Great job OP!!!

For whatever reason these symptoms (diet) can manafest at any period of our life, but it’s usually early adulthood.

When Im in Asia and have sex almost every day I hardly experience depression or sadness, i think regular sex with different pussy gets rid of 90% of problems even though when there I mostly eat lower quality, processed food.
On the other hand in Australia I can eat the best vegetable smoothies, fish , steaks etc and still be depressed if pussy is lacking in quality and quantity

This is, I like milk. Eggs. Quark, whey protein. Learn to love the fog. What is the fog anyway? Lethargy? Admit wanking is a curse. Porn has to stop.

Creatine has helped me immensely in this regard.

Shoutout to Cr33pin for reminding me that stuff existed, though I keep calling it Creeapine now.

I have been through this myself and I had to struggle to regain my health. I do not have time to go into great detail, but the simplified version is that not only is gluten a culprit in wheat products and processed foods, but many problems also stem from the use of GMO wheat and the use of Glyphosate in Roundup, which is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant. You can Google all of this information.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The protein in gluten and dairy loosens the junctures in your intestinal lining, which is only one cell thick, and these foreign proteins then enter your blood stream. Once your white blood cells attack and eliminate these foreign proteins, this sets off a chain reaction that causes your white blood cells to then attack similar proteins in your own body, so that your immune system attacks your own body -- which is the catalyst for the dozens of auto-immune diseases that now plague our society.

The United States has allowed Monsanto and other companies to destroy the nations food supply. I can go to Europe and drink beer and eat bread with no problems, but doing so in the U.S. makes me sick as hell. We are still in the beginning phases of a very severe epidemic of immune disease caused by a contaminated food supply.

Your gut is so important as previously stated, people really should pay more attention to it. The more I drop unnecessary shit from my diet the better I feel.

I left the US to chase opportunity. The food is probably going to keep me out. The beef here has a very "beefy" smell the stuff back in old country lacked. I love it and I don't want to give it up.

Part of the annual potato harvest in the US is spraying the potato plants with roundup for force them to dry. A lot of the grains that aren't "Roundup Ready" get hit with Glyphosate before harvest to dry them up as well. US agricultural practices are a mix of technology imported from the Incas along with a hefty dose of chemistry. Sure, this keeps the empire from starving, but at the cost of very long supply lines to feed the coasts.

On top of gluten... there seems to also be issues with food containing lectins depending on your blood types. Organic Quinoa was my #1 food source... and simply stopping that took away the dizziness. Combined with taking a B12 supplement I had laying around... I'm bouncing with energy, and no longer feel dead cold in my extremities.

I know B12 is famously known as the Vegan supplement, but combining it with Meat + no starches honestly gave me a boost comparable to coffee. For a year and a half I've tried everything to avoid brain fog and sleepiness... and these two did it for me. Even Wikipedia list B12 as a way to treat certain forms of Anemia. Try it!

Interesting thread. Like most people here I've had similar symptoms for as long as I can remember. Recently I've switched to a higher fat/protein diet( I make a ~800-900 calorie shake every morning that consists of peanut butter, whey, and coconut oil) but I do find it hard to eat enough on it and constantly find myself reaching for random carb sources I shouldn't be eating just to maintain weight. I've also cut out 95% of refined sugar from my diet and mostly just eat some fruit everyday to get my sugar fix.

I was pretty strict for about a month and started to feel better but then basically said fuck it to that extremely limited diet I was on but I do think I started to feel benefits around that time, so it may be worth trying to revisit, just requires a pretty hefty amount of discipline for me to eat that clean when I've basically grown up on an american diet of shit junk food.

Would appreciate any input from anyone here who has successfully cut out gluten/wheat/starches etc for a long period of time and how you maintained that.

I eat a huge raw organic salad almost every day for lunch with a few ounces of good quality meat (e.g., no nitrate-filled sandwich meats), some good quality extra virgin olive oil, some apple cider vinegar, and a sprinkling of good quality sea salt. I eat a little more meat for dinner but still mostly organic vegetables. High quality starches a few weeks are fine, e.g., yams, sweet potatoes, squash, etc. I eat organic fruit after every meal. I eat only grass fed beef and try to eat the most natural chicken possible -- although it is almost impossible to pass up those damn whole-roasted chickens for only $5.00.

Do not try to make all changes at once -- or it will doom you to failure. Improve your diet in stages. As you see your health improve and your weight loss, it will instill a natural desire to improve your diet. At the beginning stages of your new diet, you can also reward yourself with an "eat anything on Friday" if you ate well the rest of the week. It gives you something to look forward to as a reward for otherwise good behavior. Later, you will not need this crutch. Eventually, when you pass by the pastry case, you will not see pastry -- only poison. Good luck.

Just that, by itself, is a huge improvement over the Standard American Diet!

When I need to focus, I fast.

Wake up, drink a ton of water, 1 coffee and work. 3-4 hours later, another coffee, and when the important stuff is done I'll carb up again. How the hell people give up bread entirely though I have no idea. Nice fresh bread is my weekend treat!

It's also good to cut back in the booze dept for a little while. Havent seen anyone mention that yet but that often gives me a gnarly brain fog when I overdo it. Especially really rich craft beers.

I'm in the process of a 3 month detox diet where there's no caffeine, sugar, gluten, wheats or grains, dairy, nor alcohol allowed. The hardest part is the caffeine for me followed by the wheat/gluten. Today is day 10 and I'm just starting to finally clear out the brain fog. Probably dropped about 15 lbs already too! Just Google candida diet. Also fermented foods like sauerkraut seem to help me out too with brain fog. Good luck!

Just Google candida diet.

Candida is a serious problem. Most people do not realize that it is possible to get brain fog by the fermentation process in your gut, which makes you drunk without drinking any alcohol. It is known as gut fermentation syndrome.

Quote:Quote:

“When candida metabolizes sugars it produces byproducts and chemical derivatives of alcohol. When those get into your circulatory system, it can give you that feeling of being hungover or drunk,” says Kiran Krishnan, a microbiologist in Florida.

Sometimes, people with the condition assume they’re just sick when they experience symptoms like fogginess, lightheadedness, and overall lethargy, but if they had their blood tested it would actually show a slight elevation in blood alcohol content (BAC) depending on what type of alcohol derivative their body produced, says Krishnan.

“It’s just like what happens when you drink, except it’s chronic,” he says. “Drinking causes inflammation in the body and puts stress on the liver, and so does this. It’s basically like these microbes in your body are drinking and having a party and you’re paying the price for it.”

If you’re still not sold, here’s more proof: in 2016, an upstate New York woman blew more than four times the legal limit, despite insisting she hadn’t had a drink in hours; turns out, she was telling the truth, and a judge later dismissed the charges after viewing evidence that she (unbeknownst to her) had auto-brewery syndrome.

Yes, foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi have trillions (and dozens of types) of good bacteria that will colonize your gut and crowd out the bad forms of bacteria. I try to eat a small portion every day.

Been going through a lot of brain fog lately. I'm getting plenty of sleep and haven't had a drink in many months, so I know it isn't alcohol related. I'm going to try and eliminate a lot of the gluten as suggested, giving The Whole 30 diet a shot, as the book explains which food groups you really want to avoid, and which ones have the most nutritional firepower. Also, going to eat more organic foods, as all the crap they spray on the non-organics is no doubt giving many of us low-level illnesses that we can't put our finger on.

I was reading about kimchi the other day and my girl found a recipe with it but I have no idea where to find it.

Is there a brand/place to get it easily in Europe? It seems to have a lot of benefits, but I'm not having much luck here.

Sauerkraut isn't for me, I don't like the taste at all.

So I have experimented now a bit more, bringing back gluten. I have realised it may not just be gluten but rather cheap processed carbohydrates, I used to eat cheap wholemeal and the cheapest pasta nearly everyday (Student meals) and now after stopping touching that it has been fluctuating.

The thing is I used to live in Italy and eat high quality breads and pastas everyday - and no brain fog. So maybe it’s all about being processed. I have also been eating tons of yoghurt for the bacteria, I can’t say that my brain fog doesn’t come back from time to time, but it has reduced. I have also began using creatine and experienced mild brain fog relief, but I cannot say whether this is effective or not.

I felt a significant improvement (i.e., a whole point better, on a health scale of 1-10), after just a few weeks. Some people are so sensitive to gluten, however, that just a small accidental exposure can affect their health for up to 6-8 months. That means that they need to have no exposure to gluten whatsoever for up to 6-8 months to realize normal health. Everyone is different.
