Dude, you need to get comments back up again. The latest post on picture-taking is pretty interesting. I'd thought about that same issue when I was on my last trip when my camera broke and I was scrambling around to get a new one. I still say, it's good to have a camera if you have a serious interest in photography, photographic technique and photography as an art, and not necessarily as a bunch of picture snapping. If I'm traveling with friends, we probably will want to take some pictures where we are. And if you are somewhere particularly remote and exotic, like the salar de uyuni(which few people in the world have heard of or seen outside the relatively few people who care to go to Bolivia), taking a picture of yourself on that blinding white sand is a must.

But you make a good point and one I've thought of before too as I was standing at the Christ Redeemer statue in Rio. I'm just looking at throngs of tourists standing at the foot of the statue, walking all over each other to take the same exact picture of the Christ, and all of them will run home and make a slideshow of it or put it on flickr like they are the first person that ever thought of such. At the same time, I have some friends who are great photographers and take some incredible travel pics that make you want to book a trip somewhere immediately.

Don't get me wrong I'll still take pictures but far fewer than I used to. I just don't feel like the pictures I take contribute to the world, as they already exist in better form.
