Niinisto said he would ask the defense forces to produce a report explaining how the decision was made. The army did not respond to requests for further comment.

The defense minister’s Blue Reform group remained in the country’s center-right government after it splintered off from the anti-immigrant Finns party that was kicked out of the coalition last year.

Many Finnish schools have a weekly vegetarian day and the military said it has continuously increased the share of vegetarian options on the menu is mess halls.

I seem to recall reading that the US Army estimated in theater (Pacific WWII) a soldier needed about 4,000 calories per day. It would be just about impossible to get that kind of intake from just vegetables.

Actually eating meat every day is not good for you so I agree with this policy. It would be bad if they forced full time vegetarianism, but a few day break from EVERY product group is healthy, especially from meat.

I myself practice 1-3 day meatless days per week and I am very satisfied with the results.

If meat is substituted with fish then it is actually great because fish contain a lot of essential oils for human body.

Even if it is not substitute with fish - a single vegan day has no hurt anyone and is also god for health. Full time veganism is bad of course, but a single vegan day per week is very good.

Guess what - in real war conditions you cannot expect warm cooked balanced meal with meat or fish every day. The organism better be used to some time functioning in fasting mode or mode of surviving from the land (roots/berries) - it actually prepares a soldier for a war like scenario psychologically.

I am not sure. As an example, I just looked up rice. One cup of white rice is about 100 calories, so to get 4,000 calories from rice would mean needing to eat 40 cups per day. I consider myself a somewhat 'big eater' at times, and I think for myself trying to have that much food would just simply not be possible. For a person that is not such a big eater, I think it would be impossible to have enough calories on low cal foods like rice.

Now, put a little meat in, like a MC Big Mac with large fries, and it would only take about four of those to get over 4,000 calories in a day. That I could do in a day as long as they were spaced out.

First, you don't need 4000 calories a day unless you're going through some grueling physical program, which most likely they're not, but even if they were, like I said it would be so easy to get all those 4000 cal and more from non animal sources.

Second, what makes you think you would be getting all your calories from rice when you have dozens of other non animal calorie rich foods? I gave you a few examples but there's a lot more, you can have a hugely varied diet with non animal food sources only.

Third, the majority of the calories in a big mac with fries come from non animal sources, ie, the bread, the sugars in the ketchup and other dressings, the fries, the fat from the frying oil, etc., not from the meat (if you can call that meat).

Finland ran the Russians (well, Soviets) ragged the last time they made a go of it. I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand.

MREs (Meal Ready to Eat - the US Military's standard ration) are about 50% vegetarian and they're mostly not awful. Calories aren't an issue as they're chock full of refined carbs which in the long run may not be the healthiest but that's really not a concern in combat.
