Finnish army forces soldiers to eat vegetarian meals

The soldiers are required to eat two vegetarian meals a week, which I'm sure will help them become more efficient killing machines.

Quote:Quote:

They say an army marches on its stomach, and a decision to serve Finnish soldiers two compulsory vegetarian meals a week has upset the nationalist defense minister.

The move aims to help soldiers eat more healthily and mitigate the impacts of meat production that contribute to global warming, the army said.

But Finland’s defense minister, Jussi Niinisto, from the nationalist Blue Reform party, said he was perplexed by the decision, of which he had not been informed in advance.

“...this forced feeding seems to be an ideological decision. As the old saying goes, an army marches on its stomach. No army can fight on lentil soup or cauliflower shakes,” Niinisto told the Aamulehti newspaper.

Finland, which shares a 1,340km (833 miles) border and a difficult history with Russia, has compulsory military service of up to a year for all men.

Niinisto said he would ask the defense forces to produce a report explaining how the decision was made. The army did not respond to requests for further comment.

The defense minister’s Blue Reform group remained in the country’s center-right government after it splintered off from the anti-immigrant Finns party that was kicked out of the coalition last year.

Many Finnish schools have a weekly vegetarian day and the military said it has continuously increased the share of vegetarian options on the menu is mess halls.

I'm sure Finnish female soldiers love the healthy new menu!

I didn't know Finland was cucked. I always thought of it as a bad ass country. Guess I was wrong.

One of the human body's many amazing qualities is that when you're deficient in a key nutrient, you will naturally start to crave sources that your body has learned contain even trace amounts of it.

For instance, protein.

Given that the meat dish might be surstromming (fermented fish and not in the good way like the Vietnamese do it), a vegetarian meal doesn't sound so bad.

Video has NSFW language is definitely somewhat NSFL.

The Finnish army sure has changed since I did my stint back 2003...

Things started to change when Finland joined the EU, and got worse/weirder in the last 8 years or so.

How are they going to get enough calories per day eating vegetables?

I seem to recall reading that the US Army estimated in theater (Pacific WWII) a soldier needed about 4,000 calories per day. It would be just about impossible to get that kind of intake from just vegetables.

Isn't Finland full of fish everywhere? Can't they just wrap the fish in some edible seaweed, cook that and call it a day?

I'm sure the Russians are watching this and quaking in their boots at the thought of facing an environmentally friendly, animal cruelty-free Finnish soy-army.

Beans, rice, oatmeal, lentils, avocados, pineapple, coconut, bananas, bread and so on. Not that you should but it's actually very very easy to get all the calories you need from non animal sources. This is obviously an ideological move but as long as they're getting the required daily calories and it's only two days a week it's not going to harm them in any way.

Actually eating meat every day is not good for you so I agree with this policy. It would be bad if they forced full time vegetarianism, but a few day break from EVERY product group is healthy, especially from meat.

I myself practice 1-3 day meatless days per week and I am very satisfied with the results.

If meat is substituted with fish then it is actually great because fish contain a lot of essential oils for human body.

Even if it is not substitute with fish - a single vegan day has no hurt anyone and is also god for health. Full time veganism is bad of course, but a single vegan day per week is very good.

Guess what - in real war conditions you cannot expect warm cooked balanced meal with meat or fish every day. The organism better be used to some time functioning in fasting mode or mode of surviving from the land (roots/berries) - it actually prepares a soldier for a war like scenario psychologically.

I am not sure. As an example, I just looked up rice. One cup of white rice is about 100 calories, so to get 4,000 calories from rice would mean needing to eat 40 cups per day. I consider myself a somewhat 'big eater' at times, and I think for myself trying to have that much food would just simply not be possible. For a person that is not such a big eater, I think it would be impossible to have enough calories on low cal foods like rice.

Now, put a little meat in, like a MC Big Mac with large fries, and it would only take about four of those to get over 4,000 calories in a day. That I could do in a day as long as they were spaced out.

Mage is exactly right, and you bring up a very good point most people don't think about, in war time being able to fast for long periods and survive from the land is extremely beneficial.

So the soldiers must eat vegetarian foods, even though they may need to bomb the hell out of a forest or beach for mere tactical purposes... [Image: rolleyes.gif]

First, you don't need 4000 calories a day unless you're going through some grueling physical program, which most likely they're not, but even if they were, like I said it would be so easy to get all those 4000 cal and more from non animal sources.

Second, what makes you think you would be getting all your calories from rice when you have dozens of other non animal calorie rich foods? I gave you a few examples but there's a lot more, you can have a hugely varied diet with non animal food sources only.

Third, the majority of the calories in a big mac with fries come from non animal sources, ie, the bread, the sugars in the ketchup and other dressings, the fries, the fat from the frying oil, etc., not from the meat (if you can call that meat).

Finland ran the Russians (well, Soviets) ragged the last time they made a go of it. I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand.

MREs (Meal Ready to Eat - the US Military's standard ration) are about 50% vegetarian and they're mostly not awful. Calories aren't an issue as they're chock full of refined carbs which in the long run may not be the healthiest but that's really not a concern in combat.

None of what you guys suggested was the reason they are doing this.
The army specifically said "eat more healthily and mitigate the impacts of meat production that contribute to global warming, the army said." putting politics ahead of the soldiers.

If they wanted to train them to fight in meatless conditions, or for a balanced weekly diet, they would've said so.

Instead, they want to combat cow farts.

Best thing to come out of this radical environmental movement is the whole "cows are killing the planet with their farts" thing. Even if there is some truth to it, it makes you look like a deranged idiot. I'm sure these earth loving warriors will be the first to step up and start the mass genocide of cows and their methane gas farts. Probably won't be a fun time for them since another of their favorite activities is gifs of cows playing and being petted and calling them "big doggos" to push their vegan and vegetarian propaganda.

Anyway I'm sure military morale will remain high after their hot female frontline infantry experience things like being captured and raped, headshots, mutilated bodies by bullets or artillery, the screaming from non fatal injuries and bleeding out, etc. Surely the men will hold up just fine hearing women screaming bloody murder as their guts are spilling out and their female POWs come back brutally raped. Fucking idiotic peacetime nonsense.

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral
