Good documentery, keep in mind it is created by feminist, but I was curious to why a women would want to be a mail order bride.

Another rich, extraordinarily privileged white western feminist runs around the world trying to formulate a narrative, and (as is to be expected) comes up with a whole lot of BS.

Like most of her kind, she has little understanding of the world outside of her bubble. She begins the documentary by asking why Thai women would want western men so badly, assuming that western media has created a romanticized image of the man and that this is a primary cause of Thai female desire. She then goes to some slums in Bangkok, and concludes that extreme poverty is also a major cause-the women will go with anyone, she reasons, to get out of that mess.

What she fails to do is consider the actual quality of the men these women have to choose from at home, which (contrary to the belief of this sheltered little reporter) is not that remarkable.

Western men are educated and conditioned to question patriarchal values.

This is why there are so many "nice guys" and white knights in western culture putting women on a massive pedestal. It is why our media has so many portrayals of western men playing bumbling idiots and vigilant white knights on screen. It is established here that rape is not ok, women are equal partners in a relationships, etc, etc. These things are drilled into men here. We grow up seeing examples that further establish these principles, and most of us accept them in adulthood.

What these women do not understand is that in most of the world, these values are not shared. The "patriarchy" that has long been dead or dying in the west is still strong in most parts of the world, where men get away with a lot more than they reliably can in the UK or the USA, and where traditional gender roles are not only still practiced by most but fully expected and often enforced.

Men here question these roles, and often accept things if a woman does not adhere to a traditional role. Men elsewhere do not do this quite as often, because they are not raised to do so.

This reported doesn't even bother to consider the possibility that Thai women are intelligent enough to see this clear difference on average between the way Thai and Western men are socialized to view and treat women and act accordingly.

Instead, she just runs with the standard feminist narrative ("western men are not very good"), twists her reporting to fit that narrative as best she can, and in the process implicitly denies the agency and intelligence of an entire race of women. Does she not think it possible that, for most of these poor women, western men may legitimately make better long-term partners than the other men they have access to even after they've considered his wealth and their poverty? Does she not also consider the possibility that the women themselves are using the men they're with and (gasp!) know what they're doing?

Women like this reporter are truly the most privileged to have ever walked the earth, and certainly the most privileged of this day. They live in a culture where they enjoy unprecedented wealth, access, opportunity and protection, all of which stand at levels that the vast majority of men on Earth (nevermind the women) could only dream about.
Their continued blindness to this reality is truly amazing, but I suppose I ought to be used to it by now.

There are many sides in the marriage between a "rich" westerner versus a "poor" 3rd world woman. Western media likes to throw white men under the bus in many cases and this being one of them. Each ethnicity gets its own stereotypes and misportrayals by people and the media. Since this video talks about the old white men going overseas finding younger women I will focus on this.

Her documentary I feel is not giving the full picture. Athlone, I agree with you. Good points to note.

A lot of these women know the game. They know exactly how long they need to be married and what free social assistance programs will allow them to live a comfortable life. I know a girl from medellin who is my age more or less and she told me her mom met some guy from canada maybe 10 years her senior. He sponsored her and her son who was 17 at the time. Within a few months, she separates etc, the step son gets into a fight with the step dad (the sponsor) and it ends up messy. Well the sponsor is on the hook for her welfare for 2 years I believe. She will continue to live off of social assistance (living off of our backs). I'm thinking she had this planned out all along. She wasn't actually living great in medellin and to give herself and her son a chance to make some money they should be kissing his ass as opposed to getting into a fight with him or misleading him. But where are these so called feminists shouting the abuse or dishonesty that this woman brought. She IMHO committed marriage fraud, abused the Canadian tax payers and made marriage seem like a joke.

I believe that there are those women who may be misled on these trafficking bridal agencies and it should stop. However, I am not certain as to the amount of honesty going on in the whole marriage institution period. These shows show extreme examples and do not represent the majority.

if only old western women who go to poor countries to pick up younger men where put under the same scrutiny. i remember being in the philippines which is known for having older western men dating young filipinas and this i expected to see. however i was caught off guard by old(like 60 plus) japanese women doing the same thing with young filipinos. old women do the exact same thing as men, it just dont get the media scrutiny that men get. in fact when older women do it its celebrated. the 2005 film "Bienvenidas al paraíso" is about 3 older french women who go to haiti to date the poor and probably underage local men. this preview should give you an idea of the hypocrisy i am speaking of.

When the main character finds out her vacation fling is married, she beats him in front of a hotel and the crowd at Cannes went wild with excitement. Imagine if someone submitted a film with the genders reversed.
