In a new interview (worth the read), looks like what she said matched his business difficulties and his use of recreational drugs.

Efforts are underway to find a No. 2 executive to help take some of the pressure off Mr. Musk, people briefed on the search said. And some board members have expressed concern not only about Mr. Musk's workload but also about his use of Ambien, two people familiar with the board said.

For two decades, Mr. Musk has been one of Silicon Valley's most brash and ambitious entrepreneurs, helping to found several influential technology companies. He has often carried himself with bravado, dismissing critics and relishing the spotlight that has come with his success and fortune. But in the interview, he demonstrated an extraordinary level of self-reflection and vulnerability, acknowledging that his myriad executive responsibilities are taking a steep personal toll.

In the interview, Mr. Musk provided a detailed timeline of the events leading up to the Twitter postings on Aug. 7 in which he said he was considering taking the company private at $420 a share. He asserted that he had "funding secured" for such a deal — a transaction likely to be worth well over $10 billion.

That morning, Mr. Musk woke up at home with his girlfriend, the musician known as Grimes, and had an early workout. Then he got in a Tesla Model S and drove himself to the airport. En route, Mr. Musk typed his fateful message.

I think Tesla is the next Theranos. I think it will fail within the next 6 to 12 months and Musk will go the same way as Delorean. I suspect the reason why SpaceX is doing so well in comparison to Tesla is that Musk is not involved in the day to day operation of SpaceX. The rocket engineers have been given pretty much free rein to do what they need to do to develop low cost space transportation and are doing so by doing essentially what my friends and I came up with as the proper strategy over 20 years ago. That is to stick with conventional rocket technology and focus on making the first stage reusable, followed by the second stage, all the while improving the manufacturing technology in making the rockets. The other reason why I think SpaceX is doing so well compared to Tesla is because, paradoxically, I think it easier to develop and manufacture reusable rockets than it is to make a reliable car as consumer product and manufacture millions of them to exacting standards. Making rockets from a manufacturing standpoint can possibly be easier because you're making only one or two of them at a time and are not trying to get the per unit cost (cost of good sold) down to a fine level. From a cost standpoint, there is way more "slop" to play with.

Remember that Musk, personally, is a marketing guy with some IT skills. His claim to fame was being one of the principles in Paypal where he was the marketing guy. Peter Thiel was the technical brain behind paypal and was their overall "brain" behind the outfit. Musk is a bright guy. But he does not personally have the engineering and technical experience or knowledge to understand the issues and processes of making an electric car or developing a reusable rocket. If Musk is falling apart its because he is way in over his head with his various companies, especially Tesla.

SpaceX works because of massive government subsidies.

To my knowledge, most of the obama era subsidies on Tesla cars are no longer out there.

In addition, the company has sucked up massive amounts of investment dollars but they still haven’t turned a profit. The vehicle suffers from several serious flaws.
1. They’re expensive to produce and purchase.
2. When they shit the bed, they do it big time.
3. When Tesla decides a model is obsolete, they essentially end all factory support for it. Of course the dealers want no part either.
4. 130-160 miles is still their range between charging and most places still don’t have the infrastructure to recharge them.
5. Even their new “entry” level model 3 is expensive, and Compared to a comparable gas vehicle, the difference is well over $10K. It would take years to recoup the extra price in fuel savings, and that assumes your electricity for charging is free, and that a Tesla can stay in service for over a decade(which is largely unknown at this point.)
6. Finally, every carmaker out there is working 24/7 to develop their own electric vehicles. Once they get it figured out, Tesla has no chance.

It is true that SpaceX is getting the government launch market. That's because it is the largest percentage of the total launch market. All of the traditional players (Boeing, Lockmart) are doing the same. The difference is that SpaceX is actually innovating whereas everyone else is not. SpaceX is the poster boy for how the whole government/private partnership deal is supposed to work in the eyes of its advocates.

Generally I do not believe in government subsidies or the government/private partnership thing. However, SpaceX is the one single example where it actually seems to be working as advertised. So, I'm willing to cut it slack.

Ultimately the people that you attract into your life are a reflection of who you are. Even if it's a second order effect like Elon's gf inviting this attention whore over for "collaboration." I'm not talking about some "The Secret" bullshit but it's just common sense observation of people with similar values and character ending up together.

From that perspective it maybe too late for Elon to change. The very things that make him successful also hinder his personal life. His impersonal machine like approach to management (and leadership, although I don't think he's much of a leader in person) is what made him successful. He is no doubt on the spectrum wrt obsession and drive to achieve certain single minded results -- most people aren't but most people are happy with what they have.

I think the greatest lesson is that if you don't experience success (and sex-uss) early in life then you will be haunted by the same insecurities with women regardless of how rich, famous, or successful you become later in life.

In this regard your 20s are super important and game gives us hope that we can affect those formative early adult years. But for us over 30 game is a soft patch to help us tactically deal with our shortcomes or areas of improvement. In time we may learn new habits but it's more difficult.

Elon has the right intention when he said that he wants his staff to not be bothered by media frenzy. That's a good reason to take your company private, but you shouldn't be tweeting that out. Whether it was a miscalculated PR blunder or an aspie fueled lack of social skills, I don't know.

Some of her music isnt actually that bad, in it's own weird unique way. . . Certainly better than many of today's soundcloud rappers. It's more like electronic/rap though than pure rap.
