When I said "Was racial integration a mistake?" at the start of this thread, I was being factious, but this is the kind of shit I was thinking about.

In a monoracial society, if two guys were asked to leave a starbucks 'cause they weren't buying shit, nothing would come of it. Every location is different, your suburban Starbucks in Texas doesn't have to deal with the same customer and non-customer base as downtown Philly. Excusing bad behavior, even when it’s small stuff, I think hurts blacks more than anyone in the long run. And excusing bad behavior when these incidents occur is what white liberals and quite a few blacks do. The way this incident is being handled - all the groveling and excuse making - is just going to lead to more flaunting of the rules and turning a blind eye to bad behavior in the black community- which hurts blacks more than anyone. Hence what I mean by “their own worst enemy.” I also had a post about “the soft bigotry of low expectations.” Am I naive to think black communities could improve if we held them to the same standards of behavior as everyone else?

Anyway, it could easily ended up with everyone digging in, hunkering down morally into their position, whether it was inappropriate attitude or righteous indignation, all parties are feeling disrespected and become intransigent.

Still, no way to know. By the time the police come it is all over, and the lines are drawn. It is 'sitting while black' vs. 'private business rights,' and no one is cooperating with anyone, and we are well on our way to the internet video that can be interpreted in any old way, and the multiple Twitter accusations, followed by the completely predictable apology by Starbucks no matter what happened.

The easy response to such a situation may have been to simply buy a couple of coffees to allow the black guys to use the restroom without any further drama.
As long as they went on their way after.
