Dumb VPN question

Ok, so usually I can figure out just about any computer problem,

but ever since having to spend weekends up north, i only get access to limited wifi that is shared through a communal antenna in the woods. This wifi share with something like 5 or 6 cabins and has parental controls, I'm an adult, but I can't access any website I want, like hub...

I just got back and friend telling me what I need is a vpn, something that suppose to unlock the websites on this wifi. He sent me this list and just said to pick one, sign up and install on my computer.

https://vpnpick.com/best-vpn-for-accessi...-websites/

But he couldn't tell me whether or not this is going to work for sure? Does anyone know how this stuff works and if it will unblock the parental controls when I'm at my ski resort townhouse?

Trusting response:

A VPN will send all your outgoing traffic directly to a server that will then route all of your traffic to where it really needs to go. It will receive all the traffic intended for your computer on your behalf and send it to you. As long as the VPN server's IP address isn't blocked by the parental controls, you'll be able to access anything available on the Internet.

PM me for my personal recommendation.

Untrusting response:

You just want to promote your list of VPNs, right?

Ok so I did some reading, from my understanding this will work by simply installing the app and connecting onto it, and should work on wifi, apparently recommended for wifi..

Sounds simple, going to give this a try next weekend. You said you had some recommendations? I will message.. thanks!

Dumb VPN question

My local library's wifi blocks my VPN. I wasn't even sure this was possible.

What port do you use? I use 443 to make it seem like I'm just https traffic.

Use TCP with port 443 for the VPN, and you will be able to bypass most VPN blocking. Be aware the they still can block if they have a system running. In that case try Tor? Or just use your own 3G Hotspot [Image: smile.gif]

I'm using "Private Internet Access" at $6 a month, any reason to use another one? https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/

I'm also using it. No complaints so far.

Dumb VPN question

Yep. That should work if VPN itself is not blocked by your ISP or Parental control
