Welch IRL was a very healthy and active dude who died from lung cancer at 48, a cycling nut who took care of his health. He probably died from exposure to the toxic fumes he's inhaled from volunteering several weeks at Ground Zero after 9/11. The most lethal element from those fumes being nanoparticles, which normal masks cannot filter. There was a lot of asbestos too around Ground Zero, but mesothelioma, rather than lung cancer, would have been the most likely result from asbestos exposure.
Not that this has anything to do with the overarching zeitgeist of this thread, but my autism compels me to correct you on the effects of asbestos exposure. Asbestos is much more likely to cause lung cancer than it is to cause mesothelioma.

I was under the impression that mesothelioma was the more common effect from asbestos inhilation, but you're right Higgs, lung cancer is nearly twice as common as mesothelioma, though the latter is almost exclusively asbestos related.

Still, the reason we know that asbestos was not the main culprit is that the overall ratio of lung cancer to mesothelioma in Ground Zero victims is much smaller than the 2 to 1 you would expect to get from asbestos exposure alone.
As well, forensic evidence confirms the presence of nanoparticles in the lungs of 9/11 cancer victims:

There's also a lot of thyroid cancers in the Ground Zero population. Those cancers are closely linked to the presence of radioactive materials, whose presence was observed in and around south Manhattan after 9/11.

My point must have gone over your head, ATL. The incidence ratio graphed above indicates that for every 2 cases of lung cancer caused by asbestos, there is at least one mesothelioma case. What we have instead is a much, much lower number of mesothelioma cases observed relative to the lung cancer cases, which indicates that the many lung cancer cases observed were not caused by asbestos.

What I was getting at is asbestos is more likely to cause lung cancer than mesothelioma, however a lot of mesothelioma cases are related directly to asbestos.

-Almost all of mesothelioma cases stem from exposure to asbestos.
-Asbestos also causes lung cancer (at precisely twice the incidence of mesothelioma).
-There are a lot of lung cancer cases from 9/11, and very few mesothelioma cases.
From the three points above, we can logically deduce that the lung cancer cases from 9/11 weren't caused by asbestos.

^^^ I agree with everything you wrote in your last two posts. I don't think there is any disagreement to be had here. For the sake of arguing I do not think you are a fantastic guy, you are just a great guy- argue that point.

What a derailed thread? Wasn't expecting an analysis of asbestos.
I love the show. It's an entourage with nerds if that's even possible.

I really liked the show a lot so far. The main character is kind of a neutral, but the supporting cast was something that kept the show interesting for me. We have a new season less TJ Miller, which is a bad sign to me. My guess that from now on the HBO brass will be up in their shit with a fine tooth comb, given the reason for his firing. Hopefully Mike Judge can keep things going in the right direction, however, I would guess that the SJW twats at HBO may fuck it up before it gets cancelled.
