G,

Canada, despite having the same phone number system as the US, is considered international for US carrier purposes. When you take your phone to Canada, you will be roaming. There are additional charges associated with not being on your home network in addition to any charges associated with not having a calling plan for Canada. I'm not sure if what Hencredible said about text messaging to Canada is true, because the times I have texted my friend in Canada I have incurred international texting charges (I do not have any kind of Canada plan).

The solution is for you to buy a International Roaming plan for the time you are in Canada. Additionally, you should add a Canada calling plan so that Canadian numbers are treated as US numbers.

I'm not sure who your provider is, but here is an example from AT&T: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/intern...ckages.jsp

Call them up and ask to have it added. You may also want to add an international data package, which is separate from the voice services, otherwise you will rack up huge charges if you use data.

Other providers should have similar packages. The whole CDMA (e.g. Verizon)/GSM (e.g. AT&T) thing is not really an issue in Canada, because Canada has both kinds of networks, unlike many other places, which have just GSM.

So I checked out the ATT one: $0.59/min. roaming in Canada

I think T-mobile has the same.

That does help. Thanks.

But it is still is kind of wack. I could easily rack up a 7k phone bill in a few months.

Anyone have any better solutions?

Yeah. That's their given rate without a plan. Call them up and ask about their international Canada rate. Let them know your situation. They don't always advertise those plans.

G for landline options Sprint-Canada offers good USA/Canada rates.

If you have a T-mobile phone. Unlock it and then purchase a Rogers-Canada sim card, sign up for prepaid. You can now make local calls for decent rates .08 a minute.

Rogers also has executive type plans off the books you can ask about since many Canadians do business back and forth between the states. You may have to commit to a contract... But there are ways to weasel out of that once you no longer need it.

Your best bet would be to unlock you current blackberry. You can still pop back in your T-mobile sim-chip once your back stateside. T-mobile and Rogers share the same frequency band so there phones are preety much the same. Many of my friends by T-mobile phones and hook them up here.

Use skype.

Also, I might go to Montreal this weekend and maybe even till next. Depends. I'm using airbnb and found a room for $15/night. It's close to boulevard-saint laurent.. [Image: smile.gif]

Wait I'm actually a little confused. By Saint-laurent do you mean the boulevard or the town itself?
Thanks.

G, you looked into skype? I use it all the time to talk to my Japanese friends who are overseas. It's a free chat program, but if you want to call a land line or cellphone its pretty cheap.

Unlimited calls in US and Canada $3 /per month. No contract, just a one time deal.
Or you can buy $10 credits and when they run out then, they run out.

Yeah guys, thanks for the Skype call, I know about it (I am a tech idiot, but not a complete tech idiot).

I preferably want a "hard line".

None of this call over wi-fi spotty crap.

Thoughts?

When you say hard line, do you mean a landline or just a regular Canadian cell phone plan?

I am in the tech field, I can put some words out to see what your best arrangement can be.

I would like preferably:

1. A landline to call US for cheap

2. A cheap cell phone plan to call US. Prefer using my US number.

Regarding the landline, I am thinking you can get one of these cheap ones that they have around here installed in the room that you will be staying at but I don't know if they do month to month or whether you have to commit for a year.

A cell phone plan using your US number would have to be done from the US as I don't know if Canada can map your US number onto one of their plans currently going.

For cell phone plans, I know virgin mobile (yo Richard Branson) do some pretty cheap, no committment, month to month plans that might serve your purpose.

If you like, I can call the sales dept right now and see what they can do for you.

G, If you don't like messin' with the spotty wifi try this.

I just did a quick google: "free landline calls"

I got this:

Poketalk.com
You sign up it clones your phone number, you dial from the website, and you connect to the number, you're phone will ring (landline/cellphone), because it's free you only get 10mins. Depends on what you need done.

Demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgBkAg8cm...embedded#!

DukaDial - is another service which allows you to use your landline number and call:
http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/dukadial-fr...ls-canada/
I belive this service is down or something is wrong with the website.

I'm sure there where other services in the google search but those 2 where free.

Yeah that's what I thought lol. hmm how's Montreal during the Winter? I'm not fully sure but I may go there this weekend for a week maybe.

The weather isn't that harsh in the winter but there is more to
do in the summer. What you hear about the girls in montreal
is true;it isn't hype.I can't speak on how easy or difficult
it is to meet/hook-up with one.I'm a beta-male who doesn't
go out or approach women;so I can't really say.

I suppose if you're tall,good-looking,charismatic you
can meet women anywhere,at anytime.If you haven't
been here before you'll be stunned at the attractiveness
of some of the women (especially 16-25/26 yrs old).I've
come across some almost jaw-dropping beauties just
taking the bus/metro(subway) to work. So,I can just
imagine what its like in the clubs/certain bars.

Good luck

The bolded is false. Montreal is very cold in the winter. Do you live there or do you have polar bear blood? What do you mean it isn't that harsh? Then where is 'that harsh'?

Yeah, I was there in September and the weather was getting bad.

It seemed like the place probably had the worst weather in all of North America.

Montreal is brick as hell during winter. I think it's one of the coldest major cities in the world during that time of year.

Winter are really warm now , lucky you haven't been there the past decade . September is one of the best month of the year , you had been probably unlucky . For the worst weather well , I think it depend of the perspective . For the cold it's colder in the west and Vancouver don't have snow but it's really depressive it always rain overthere . Montréal have more sun in a year than Barcelona , the thing who kill us here is the humidity .

Is the West colder than Winnipeg? Because I've been to Winnipeg and I've never felt cold like that in my life. And this was in the fall.

You say winters are really warm..can you lay down a temperature in celsius that you consider as really warm. Please include wind chill with your total.

You will get someone killed with that misleading talk. Montreal is FCUKING cold. The wind is nasty. I've been there umpteen times and once in March (St Patrick's day). The wind was, as we say in London, cutting.

Yes the west for me is Winnipeg, the prairies and Alberta . In celcius -10 to 0 it's warm . It's ideal for winter . True the wind can be deadly but, it's never the same . It's the fleuve st-laurent effect . If you are well dressed , I don't see any problem . I think the humidity in summer is worst than the cold in winter .

You sure about that? It sounds kind of off.

Barcelona gets 2500 hours of sunshine a year on average. That's an average of 7 hours a day.

Montreal gets on average 2,026.8 hours of sunshine annually, with summer being the sunniest season

Winnipeg is the coldest city in the world.

The Eastern part of the US has had a very mild winter this year.

I don't remember the magazine I had read on this . It was an article on the sun energy . I tried to search on the net it's really vague , What I find tho it's than Montreal have more sun than the majority of the city in France including Paris and one of the reason it's the timezone .
