The New Spirit of Capitalism and Game.

Hello everyone.
I read Boltanski and Chiapello's "The New Spirit of Capitalism" (https://deterritorialinvestigations.file...talism.pdf) recently and there were many parts that I found closely related to some of the ideas that are widespread among this forum.
It's a good read if anyone is interested in politics and mostly on human behavior in the contemporary capitalist world.

I'll throw in some quotes to get you intereted, but be aware that without context they won't mean much.

"We have already seen that great men are not only versatile, engaged and mobile
themselves, but that they cause others to benefit from these qualities by striving
to advance their employability at the same time as they develop their own.
They do not keep what they garner via their connections for themselves, with
the result that the good network remains open and expands continuously, to
the maximum benefit of all. "

"The <formula of investment> is a major condition for the city's harmony,
for by Linking access tD the <condition of great man> tD a sacrifice, it arranges
things so that benefits are 'balanced' by costs. High status procures benefits
for the person who accedes to that condition. But the customary sense of
justice also has it that 'you can't win on all counts': that people deserved access
to high status on account of specific sacrifices which have, moreover, been of
universal benefit or, more simply, useful to society as a whole. It is then just
that someone who is so deserving, and w ho has done so much for the common
good, should be recognized as great, and enjoy the advantages bound up with
this condition.
Adaptability
<Formula of investment>
Being streamlined, Flexibility,
Tolerance, Renting'
In a projective city, access to the condition of great man presupposes sacrificing
anything that might impede availability - that is to say, the ability to
engage in a new project. The great man renounces having a single project that
lasts a lifetime (a vocation, a profession, a marriage, etc.), He is mobile, Nothing
must hamper his movements. He is a 'nomad'.20 In this sense, all the sacrifices
that are made have the effect of enhancing the streamlined character of entities
- of persons, but also of things - in order to favour their reorganization when
the next project comes along."

"People cannot be judged on the basis of a single project, because their status
reveals itself in the model test and this, as we already know, is the transition
from one project to the next. "

etc.

Who says a great man has to be loaded with cash? With some skills, you can have a nice lifestyle. At the same time, you can lay down meaningful roots in a town, get a hobby, have friends, family, etc.. There's a time for everything, both being mobile, and making somewhere home.

Notice that "great man" is a concept developed in the text. It does not mean "a man who is great", but rather -in short- the kind of man who thrives in the system and who controls it through economic power. Being a great man on the terms propossed by the authors has nothing to do with being happy as your link with "nice lifestyle, hobby, friends, family", etc. Suggest.

Certainly, I bent the meaning for the sake of rhetoric. Have you seen It's a Wonderful Life? Living such a life is one of the most beautiful ways to live.
