Datasheet: Rome (All roads lead to Rome)

I tried searching datasheet for Rome because other than few minor reports, I didn't really find one that talks in detail. Mostly written by people who have been in Rome very short time. I grew up in Rome, so I'll try to give as much as detail I can. If I miss anything, ask me here so I'll try to answer.

Description: Rome is the biggest city in Italy by population. Official reports say that 3 million people live but it's well over 3.5 million by now. People in Rome are from Lazio region. They're very proud to be Roman because of the empire once conquered the world.

History: If I get into history about Rome, you'll have to read this report for good 3 days, so I'll skip most of it. As you know, it's the oldest city in Europe, actually one of the oldest in the world. Most tourists visit Rome because of historic sites. You can visit Roman Forum, Artsy Piazza, Vittoriano, Quirinal Palace, Santa Maria, Colosseum etc.

City: City has many neighborhoods, such as Modern Center, Old Rome, Vatican, North Center, Trastevere, San Giovanni, Aventino, Nomentano. Each neighborhood is different than other. For example, Old Rome is Renaissance-era centre of the city. Trastevere is very different than Old Rome because it has many shops, cafe's, bars. Whatever you're into, you can find it. I mean, if you're into history, you need to go to Colosseo, Vatican or Old Rome but if you want to see daily life, you need to go to Trastevere, Modern Center or so on.

Prices: This is where it's tricky in Rome. Because it's a city that welcomes a lot of tourist in the world along with London and Paris, a lot of shops and restaurant around touristic areas want to rip tourists as much as they can. They also don't pay much attention when they're cooking because tourists really dont have a clue how it should be done anyway.

You can have a cappuccino for €2.00 in some areas but you can also have it for €5.00 in touristic areas. Samething goes for food and shopping as well. I wouldn't really recommend you to eat at very touristic places.

Girls: This is where everything gets tricky. I lived in New York and LA on/off 7-8 years. I went to university and grad school in United States. If you think picking up American girls hard, come and try in Italy. It's going to be most difficult scene you'll ever see. I have visited over 30 countries by now, because I work for logistic company now, I think Italian girls are the hardest in the world.

Sure, some guys can get lucky and bang one very same night they meet but doing it constantly is almost impossible unless you're Berlusconi or Leonardo DiCaprio. Italian girls are especially so difficult for Italian men due to heavy influenced by catholic religion as well as family ties.

Italian girls will be more receptive to American guys. After World War 2, United States started to have huge influence in Italy due to strategic location. Italians absolutely love anything about United States, including men. I can't say same regarding other countries though. I mean, if you're German or French, you won't have a much chance in here. Generally speaking, Italians don't really like other Germans or French. If you're Muslim, forget about it. I think latest poll in Repubblica said %87 people in Italy hate Arabs and other Muslim countries.

Transportation: Even though, Rome is considered big, since it's very old, everything is really close to each other. Well if you rent a place in northern part, of course it'll take time to get into the city but since you'll be tourist, you'll hang out in the center usually. I always walk around the city and I think it's the best way to discover places.

If you need to go somewhere fast, you gotta take taxi. I wouldn't really recommend you to take public transportation because after joining to EU, a lot of Romanians and Albanians came to Rome, they usually target tourists to rob them.

Summary: Rome is a great city to live to the fullest and I do enjoy my culture a lot, it is a city that you must see it in your life but if your main object is to pick up girls, I wouldn't recommend to come to Rome because it will be very difficult for average guy.

I haven't really hooked up with any Italian girl over 2-3 years now and I'm not really look forward to it. I don't really put any effort as well. One of the best thing about Rome is that since there's always a lot of tourists, local guys can go pick up tourist girls, especially from North Europe or from United States. I've been always targeting them for good amount of time now. If you ever come to Rome, you can always let me know if you need more details about any questions you might have.

As Romans say, "All roads lead to Rome." :mrgreen"

Nice, I can add just a few points

In Italy is hard to get girls because of a strong culture that tend to be resistant to western's sexual liberation.
Italy is of course very westernalized in everything but when it comes to dating it's still very old school and traditional.
There is a strong "slut shaming", the idea that girls can sleep around freely and then settle down and marry a guy is seen as ridiculous and crazy by people, the local culture is strong and is passed down from generation to generation intact so there isn't much difference in what old and young people think about it.
Slut shaming is actually practiced as much by guys and girls.
It's mostly a relationship oriented country in which people get to meet through common friends and there is absolutely no cold approaching culture.
Approaching a girl without knowing her is seen as something only an homeless alcoholic would do and so nobody really do it.
Italian do approach but they do it mostly online or in settings where it's ok to strike up a random conversation.
And of course they do it through social circle mingling which is actually the way to go in Italy.

The conservative nature of girls has its pro and con.
It's good if you want to get a girl for a serious relationship because most likely she would be someone who hasn't had many sexual partner before you but it's very bad if you want lots of casual hookups.

Italian girls of course are very different abroad because since they are away from a conservative society that expect girls to "behave" and from strong family's "controlling" they can embrace the culture of more sexually liberated countries and unleash their slutty nature, so of course they're much easier to get abroad than in Italy.
Even Italian girls that have lived abroad for a considerable amount of time and then come back to Italy would be far easier than girls that have lived all their life in Italy.

Rome is an amazing city for tourism, like sort of like NYC and Paris combined. Most Americans when they travel to Europe think London or Paris first, when a case can be made that Rome is better than both. The Vatican museum for example is the equal of the Louvre.

I can think of at least a dozen cities better than Paris or London for just about anything. Rome is one of them. The Forum is one of my favorite tourist destinations. For lovers of history Italy is the best country in Europe. To live though not so much. Italian guys are thirsty as fuck, I've seen how the approach and I've heard many times girls complaining about them. Thats usually a result of a disastrous dating market back at home. There are some hot Italian girls to be found but their attitude is a huge turn-off.

It's other way around. I think Italy is the best country to live in, if you have constant income without working. If you try to work and live a good life, yes Italy would be terrible but if you have constant income, Italy is the best.

I also lived in London, LA, Miami, New York, Istanbul, Athens, Paris on and off too but life in Italy is so much better. Only downside is money, of course.

You are right Rossi and I would bet that with sufficient assets or income Italy will remain a safe haven for people of our community at large for at least our prolonged lifetime.

Same thing for the Côte d'Azur of france , Vaucluse , Toscane all that corridor is too rich and too much of a nice climat to decline in one or two generations.

Great info Rossi, I've lived half a year in Rome.
They were great times, had many bangs but only one Italian. When you're a student abroad you don't care about hard Italian chicks when you can bang chicks away from home.
I feel like I know Rome like the back of my hand, like my hometown. Every time I speak or think about Rome nostalgia just flows into my mind.
Btw Rome is not the oldest city in Europe. There a few cities older than Rome and where I live now, Lisbon, is way older than Rome.

Ciao Rossi, our home country is amazing for the history, art and food, hope that in a not too distant future it will improve also in other aspects.

Viva l'Italia, grazie Roma.
