Envision - It's envisage. We gave you the language, America, don't take liberties.

I'll be back momentarily - No, you won't, you'll be back in a moment. It's not the same thing, and one is clearly nonsense.

One of my guys said the former the other day; it was all I could do not to throw him out of the window.

Not only did we take some liberties, we also took the empire! [Image: american.gif]

My favorites:
1. Comprised of
2. Oxford commas (let's eat, grandma vs let's eat grandma).
3. Well/good (i'm well vs i'm good).

Here're two we can thank the Bush family for:

1. "Divisive" with a short 'I' sound in the 2nd syllable. "Div-EYE-Siv" is correct. The elder Bush pronounced this wrong in a speech in 1989 and we were off to the races. In this era of the Trump-hating MSM, you hear this one all the time.

2. "Nucular" instead of the correct "nuclear." George W. is famous for starting this one. It's so commonly pronounced this way now people don't even bother correcting it (other than Grammar Nazis like me).

"Really" is redundant almost always where it's used. For example:

"I really like Eastern European girls"

Instead, when you say "I like Eastern European girls", the meaning doesn't change.

I fail to see the function of "really" unless you "really" think people will not believe you otherwise.

"Do you want it or no?". It's "do you want it or not?"
"My bad" should be "my mistake"
"Have a good one" should be "Have a good afternoon/day/evening"

I fucking hate the word "winningest" - how about "Most successful?"

I hate the term "baby daddy" even more, how about about "father". It makes it sound like the father is a sperm donor.

If you want to see a total rape of the English language go to BBC Pidgin

Here's an example:

US: Sports stars bend knee give Trump

Quote:Quote:

"Trump wan use sport divide us".

Dis na wetin American basketball star, Lebron James, talk when im chook mouth put for di matter wey don catch fire for US.

Wetin happen?

Last Friday, President Donald Trump talk for one rally for Alabama say make club owners for National Football League sack any player wey no stand when dem dey sing di national anthem for match.

Im say na disrespect dem dey disrespect di national flag.

People dey feel say im dey talk about Colin Kaepernick, di former San Francisco 49ers quarterback wey last year, refuse to stand for national anthem but instead, im knee down.

Im say im dey do am to protest di way police dey kill black people for America anyhow.

Di talk wey Trump talk vex plenty people, including top players, coaches and even other stars for entertainment.

Dem say di president wan prevent freedom of speech, say im dey try hold people from talking dia mind plus, di way im talk am get racial meaning.
How people take respond?

First, for Sunday, plenty clubs join together to show say dem no support wetin di president talk.

Players, coaches and club owners hold hand and some knee down as dem dey sing di national anthem for plenty of di matches wey dem play on Sunday.

Dem talk say dis na to show di president say im no fit divide them.

Other athletes wey dey do other sports like basketball star Lebron James don come out for social media, come do video to say dem dey united against wetin di president talk.

Di matter enter Twitter as di hashtag #TakeAKnee wey dem create trend well-well.

Another singer, Pharell Williams, wey do di popular song "Happy", also knee down for im concert for Charlotteville.

I don't give a fuck if they consider it a separate language - this is just slang and shitty English to me.

Tell me something, fellas.

How do our black RVFers feel about Ebonics in general? I can imagine from our above-average-intelligence membership that it might grind one's gears just a tad?

Wish Athlone was still around. I'm sure he'd have quite a bit to espouse on the topic.

No, genius, "begging the question" is a logical fallacy. You, and 95% of everyone else who uses this phrase, meant to say that it RAISES the question. This is so basic, so simple, that it drives me nuts every time I hear it.

I don't see the problem here. I have begged ex-girlfriends to regularly ask me if I want a blowjob.

"Nucular" goes back to even Jimmy Carter, who actually worked on a nuke sub. It's just a regional pronunciation, not an intelligence marker (sorry, libs).

That said, I refrain from criticizing someone's spoken vernacular (I'm guilty of using incorrect spoken English all the time — "I got a…," etc.). But clarity in speech works differently than in the written word.

If something is worth committing to the printed/written word, it's worth being clear, concise and correct.
One of my jobs is a copy editor, and you wouldn't believe the sixth grade writing from adults I have to clean up — even from actual teachers and professionals who should know better.

Speak however you wish — casually, persuasively, whatever.
But when you commit to print, get your shit together.

Being a crusty old grammar nazi I've got a ton, but here are two that drive me bonkers on the spot:

- 'there' instead of 'their', e.g. it wasn't there idea...
- 'I can't deal' instead of 'I can't deal with this'

I am not sure if the latter one is inherently false, it just drives me nuts for some reason. I think I need help...

A reader might confuse that as a misspelling of nose. Also acceptable are:

No's
Nos

One of my pet peeves during English class in grade school was correcting grammar and spelling in sentences where the corrected version didn't sound or feel right. I would have rather just rewritten the sentence so it sounded correct. Can't quite do that on a test. [Image: dodgy.gif]

Might be best to just rewrite the sentence so it conveys the message you're trying to send.

Bitches ain't nothin' but tricks and noes.

The obvious...

"for all intensive purposes"
"take it for granite"

This isn't incorrect technically, but it reeks of reddit-fagness - "whilst" in place of "while." It's just trying to sound smarter using a word that means the exact same thing but has one more letter.

"That's rascist." - I have seen this one continuously throughout the years, even before the full-on PC onslaught. It boggles my mind, where the fuck does the S come from? Race -> Racist. Simple enough. The only word I can think of using the "rasc" without a hard C sound is "irascible."
